----Formal English---- Prof: I have to ask you all a question... If there were a humanitarian crisis in your country, what would you do? Abelardo: The first thing I would do is call home to see whether my parents are okay. Then I would see the best way to contribute to the cause. Valentina: Yes. If my city or close family were involved, I would even go home to help. Prof: Recently there was a humanitarian crisis caused by an earthquake. What did you all do? Abelardo: Well, in that case, I made a donation of money to one of the best-established organizations to address that situation. Valentina: The first thing I did was to find out what was most in need. Later I got in contact with that organization and I donated clothing and food to the victims. Prof: To me, that seems so nice. Help, whether it's big or small, has a strong impact in reducing the suffering. --------------------------- Learn Spanish with SpanishPod101! ----Formal English---- The City of the Kings Lima, known as the city of kings, is the capital city of the Republic of Peru. It was founded by the Spanish on January 18, 1535, and as the capital of the viceroyalty of Peru was the largest and most important city in South America during the Spanish regime. The capital city is the main gateway to Peru, and here you can enjoy both its archaeological sites belonging to civilizations before the Inca empire, the historic center, museums, nightlife, festivals, and so on. The historic center of Lima, which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1988 because of its importance during the viceroyalty of Peru, left as testimony several architectural legacies. Baroque and Renaissance styles can be seen in the churches built during the viceroyalty. Highlights include the Basilica and Convent of San Francisco, Plaza Mayor, and the Cathedral of Lima, among others. Some sections of the walls of colonial Lima, Spanish medieval fortifications that were built to defend the city from pirates and privateers, can also be appreciated. In Lima, there are about fifty museums, and the city is home to the largest number of museums around the country. Today it is regarded as the financial, commercial, cultural, and economic development center. With more than eight million people, approximately thirty percent of the population, Lima is the fifth most populous city in Latin America and the Caribbean and is one of the thirty most populous urban agglomerations in the world. --------------------------- Learn Spanish with SpanishPod101!
