 Advanced Audio Blog S4 #10 - Toledo | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:53

Learn Spanish with SpanishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SpanishPod101.com for more great Spanish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Toledo Toledo is one of the five provinces that make up the autonomous region of Castilla La Mancha. It is located on a rocky hill surrounded by the Tagus River in the heart of Spain, just 70 kilometres from the capital, Madrid. The city was originally built by the Romans, who left many traces in their wake. It was inhabited for centuries by Christians, Jews and Muslims. This means that the city has major and undisputed importance for its medieval remains. The labyrinth of narrow streets that form the historic centre of Toledo is entirely enclosed by walls with innumerable entrance gates. Its monuments, its steep and narrow cobbled streets turn a tour of the city into a voyage in time. Traditionally, the metal industry was Toledo's economic basis with particular expertise in the production of swords and knives. Toledo has many cultural attractions and has been listed as a World Heritage Site since 1987. Monasteries, mosques, bridges, churches, and synagogues are among its more than 100 historic monuments. Most are located in the old city centre. Toledo was also the birthplace and residence of poets and artists, such as Garcilaso de la Vega and El Greco, among many others. Among its culinary specialities are roast and sautéed lamb, beans with partridge, carcamusa (meat stewed in spicy tomato sauce), and migas – a tasty breadcrumb-based dish. Two delicacies for which the city of Toledo is famous are Manchego cheese and marzipan, and for which it has a proprietary designation of origin. --------------------------- Learn Spanish with SpanishPod101!
