… before we dive in with Flickr’s changes …  Sheep Photography + Test Drives + Canon Canon did it again! They teased us for a long, long time and they have finally released their latest ooh la la lens, the 200-400mm ƒ4, so you know we have a few things to say about that! Brad Pitt anyone? His 2008 images from a magazine spread have popped up again. I’m not sure why, but they have and it’s left folks weighing in on his talent … Are these photos indicative of his mad photo skills or are they just a bunch of grainy family snaps? Hey, wanna go for a test drive, y’all? If you are in America and you meet the requirements, you might be able to in the form of a bag from Think Tank Photo. They’ve come up with something a little unique, so have a listen and see if you fit the bill. Oh, Flickr. You Didn’t! I guess I should say oh Marissa, you DIDN’T? Some huge, HUGE changes were made to the Flickr photo sharing site. The response has definitely been split and it’s left photographers everywhere buzzing. Adobe Before we launch Mac’s Starbucks chat with our Shutter Time friend, Alan Schietzsch, we of course contribute to the buzz of all things Adobe. In the past week, they’ve made a number of photographers very happy while ruffing the feathers of many more. It’s no secret there will be no CS7 (dry your eyes) and instead, have thrown their photoshop goodness up in a cloud and we just need to fork over the cash for a subscription to access said goodness. A good business move by Adobe or sneaky step? Tune in and hear what we think. Oh how far the mirrorless camera has come. But first …   NAB Show 2013 I never made it to NAB this year, but fortunately my good mate did and even though he’s a video editor, he made sure to keep me humming with iPhone snaps of fresh camera gear. What really made me take notice was the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Since this isn’t a video podcast, I’ll let y’all read the scoop, but after missing NAB yet again, I’ll definitely be NAB bound in 2014, y’all! They’ve Come A Long Way, Baby Early 2012 in episode 14, Mac and I, the judgemental pusses that we are, chatted about mirrorless camera systems that seemed to be making photographers take note, many making the switch from the DLSR lineup, with some even predicting the slow demise of the DSLR. Ridiculous, right? Well, having both been swayed since by a little camera called the Fuji X-Pro 1, we have changed our tune … to some degree. We chat about how far these little mirrorless camera systems have come and whether or not they have lived up to the hype. We also go over some of the aspects of these systems many photographers don’t really talk about, and elements one should possibly factor in before making the switch. Mirrorless cameras are not for everyone, and this is where we as co-hosts are divided … Mirrorless Cameras vs. DSLRS. It’s off the hook, yo! Oops We were so caught up in our rambles we forgot to mention the updates for Lightroom 4.4. It’s now out of beta mode and ready for final release, so don’t forget to update! We take a look at some of the resources available via photographers who offer their knowledge and insights to making the photography business work for them ….for free. Soaking up the goodness from other photographers is a highly valuable tool to utilize as you build your business and / or nurture your talent. Massive props and many thanks to those incredible working photographers who do so willingly. It won’t be too much of a surprise whose site I flock to the most! Editing Whiz The digital world has made post-processing much easier to stretch your creative mind. The question is, have we gone too far with editing our images these days? Is there such a thing as too much processing in post? With all the software available (yeah, we’re talking to you, Nik by Google!), it’s hard to keep up, but it also gives us that much more to work with. Should we even be editing at all, or always get it 100% right in-camera? We discuss different aspects of post-processing and debate where we think it belongs in today’s photography world. Film! It’s been just over a year since we’ve dedicated an episode to film photography, so we thought it was time to bring it up again. This time we asked Alberta photographer, Scott Hutchison, to join in on the fun. In Each Corner Mac and Scott face off over the discussion of film vs. digital and I just sit back and listen and observe, ready to tackle them both if need be! Shedding Some Light Before we get right to the matter of chasing light in photography, we first touch on something else. The night we recorded this, it was Anti-Bullying Day here in Canada. We bring this up because bullying is often found in the photography world, as frustrating as that is, and we hope to see change in our industry.   Space the Canadian Frontier You might wonder, how a country of 20 can have it’s own Space Agency… we do.  We also are very proud of Commander Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut currently living aboard the International Space Station (ISS).  What’s really cool about this, is that he has been taking stunning photographs of our little world from up there. These stunning photographs and more can be found at his twitter account.  So, go follow him right now!  We also found some apps that you can use to follow the ISS in the skies, and when it’s overhead, go outside and wave.  Maybe you’ll end up in one of his images! ISS Tracker for Android NASA App for iOS CES There were a lot of new things at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, that made us smile, and a few that made us cringe. One of those was the new Polaroid IM1836, an Android based camera with interchangeable lenses.  Also the new Canon PowerShot N, makes Sid roll her eyes, but Mac thinks it’s kinda cute.  Of course the Fuji rumors came true and the replacement for the X100 is here, with all the glory of focus peaking, phase and contrast detection AF, and other cool features.  What makes us scratch our heads in wonder is the fact that this is a fixed lens camera, with the fastest AF… so what’s the focus peaking for?? Why do we upgrade our gear? Since we are talking about gear, and all this new gear makes us salivate, like Pavlov’s puppy… we have to ask ourselves why do we upgrade our gear??  Do we have to upgrade, or is it just a clever ploy, by the camera manufacturers, to spend more and more… Thank you All for listening! The End Is Near  The year end, that is! We took to our mics for one last time in 2012 to discuss and reflect on what we have learned this year from having our podcast, why we still have fun recording, etc. But before we get to sitting back with some Christmas cheer induced beverages, we dive in the Instagram debate of late … Oh No, They Didn’t! Even though by the time this podcast hits the ol’ internets, the news will be a little old, it’s still being talked about and for good reason. Instagram (Facebook) shocked many photographers and those in and around the industry alike by revising their TOS (terms of service), which implied they would be able to sell your images to advertisers without your consent or knowledge. I know, right? We chew over what the hell they were thinking and the revisions to the revision (ha!) that have taken place due to some strong ass backlash. Flickr, You Dead Sexy Thing Perfect timing on Flickr’s part, but they have done something with their aging app, causing many toes to curl and even tingle.
