Dr. David Jenkins: Creator of the Glycemic Index Thinks Plants are Best | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:50:51

When I heard that the inventor of the glycemic index promoted a plant based diet I knew I had to meet Dr. Jenkins to get him on the podcast. What an honor to speak to him and share his story with you all. Dr. Jenkins is currently a professor in both the Departments of Medicine and Nutritional Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, a staff physician in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and the Director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center, St. Michael’s Hospital. He was educated at Oxford University, where he obtained his DM, DPhil and DSc. After further research at the British Medical Research Council’s Clinical Gastroenterology Unit, he returned to Oxford to a joint appointment in the Department of the Regius Professor of Medicine (Richard Doll) at the Radcliffe Infirmary and as a faculty member of the University Laboratory of Physiology. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. He has served on committees in Canada and the United States that have formulated nutritional guidelines for the treatment of diabetes and recommendations for fibre and macronutrient intake for the general population under the new joint United States-Canada DRI system (RDAs) of the National Academy of Sciences (Washington, DC). His research area is the use of diet in the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia and diabetes. He has over 300 original publications on these and related topics. His team was the first to define and explore the concept of the glycemic index of foods and demonstrate the breadth of metabolic effects of viscous soluble fiber, including blood glucose and cholesterol lowering. His studies on combining cholesterol lowering food components (dietary portfolio) have been recognized as creating an effective dietary alternative to drug therapy (statins) for many people and was the only dietary approach referenced in the last Guidelines of the US National Cholesterol Education Program (ATP III) and the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Guidelines. To make therapeutic diets more accessible, he has devoted much time to working with the food industry to develop products for the supermarket with specific health attributes and, for example, helped to initiate Loblaw’s ‘too good to be true’ and ‘Blue Menu’ line of products. He was awarded the W.O. Atwater Award of the USDA and the American Society of Nutrition for his studies on functional foods for the treatment of disease (2013) and the Order of Canada (OC) in 2013. He believes in the value of plant based diets, and that a major effort is required to mount large studies to determine the extent of their health benefits. He also believes that diets have to be environmentally sustainable. Please give us a 5 star rating wherever you listen to the interview. Thank you always for spending your time with us!  Dr. Bassem Youssef: Bringing Humor and Science to the Plant Based Diet | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:38:42

Dr. Bassem Youssef, dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, was the host of popular TV show AlBernameg – which was the first of its kind political satire show in the Middle East. Originally a 5-minute show on YouTube, AlBernameg became the first online to TV conversion in the Middle East and the most watched show across the region with 30 million viewers every week.   AlBernameg received wide acclaim around the world with coverage in some of the biggest media outlets, topping it off with Youssef’s appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart twice in June 2012 and April 2013. Throughout its three seasons AlBernameg remained controversial through its humorous yet bold criticism of the ruling powers, which led to tens of lawsuits being filed against the show and its host. Youssef was even issued an arrest warrant in March 2013 and turned himself in the next day where he was questioned for five hours and released on bail. In recognition of his success, Youssef was named among the Time Magazine most influential list for 2013 – under the “Pioneers” category, was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the CPJ, and was chosen by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the global thinkers during the same year.   He is also the star of an internationally renowned documentary by Sara Taksler titled “Tickling Giants” featuring Youssef’s story with AlBernameg. Youssef has recently released a book about his experience “Revolution for Dummies: Laughing Through the Arab Spring” where he gives different perspectives and insights on the Egyptian political scene through the Arab spring and after.   Youssef majored in cardiothoracic surgery, passed the United States Medical License Exam (USMLE) and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). Having practiced cardiothoracic surgery in Egypt for a period of 13 years, before moving into comedy and political satirism. If casting a questioning light on the ruling powers with humor and satire isn’t enough, Bassem has also launched Plant B TV. It is an excellent educational series of videos about the enormous value of a plant based diet. There is a 21 day challenge, recipes, expert interviews, and much more on this bilingual website. In my opinion, the best part is it highlights Bassem’s humor and energy to motivate change. What more could you ask for? Nature has a way of healing the soul, providing clarity and bringing peace to a troubled mind. Did you know there is a clinical specialty that uses plants and nature to heal? It is called horticultural therapy and it is absolutely incredible. In this interview I interview an expert in the field, Matthew J. Wichrowski, MSW HTR, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Senior Horticultural Therapist at Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Health. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the American Horticultural Therapy Association’s Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture. I first learned about horticultural therapy and Matthew when I read the book, How to Make a Plant Love You, by Summer Rayne Oakes. (See my interview with her here. https://youtu.be/KFPgNrhhUoY ) I was amazed to learn how plants were helping people with debilitating depression and anxiety but it could also be used to help with stroke victims and much more. Such an intriguing area that many of us could put to work in our daily lives. I hope you find this interview as helpful and educational as I did.  Gene Baur: The Conscience of the Food Movement | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:41:36

Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. For more than 25 years he has traveled extensively around the country, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming and our current food system. A pioneer in the field of undercover investigations, Gene has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses documenting their deplorable conditions. His pictures and videos exposing factory farming cruelties have aired nationally and internationally, educating millions about the plight of modern farm animals. Gene has also testified in courts and before local, state, and federal legislative bodies, advocating for better conditions for farm animals. His most important achievements include winning the first-ever cruelty conviction at a U.S. stockyard and introducing the first U.S. laws to prohibit cruel farming confinement methods in Florida, Arizona, and California. His efforts have been covered by top news organizations, including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2008, Gene’s book, Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, became a national bestseller. Gene, who began his activist career selling veggie hotdogs out of a VW van at Grateful Dead concerts to fund farm animal rescues, is currently Farm Sanctuary’s president. With shelters in New York and California, Farm Sanctuary provides rescue, refuge, and adoption for hundreds of farm animals each year, enabling visitors to connect with farm animals as emotional, intelligent individuals. Gene believes these animals stand as ambassadors for the billions on factory farms who have no voice, and he has dedicated his career to advocating on their behalf. Gene holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge, and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Don't forget to rate us where you listen and subscribe, more good interviews coming up!

Jeff Tkach: Unlocking the Power of Regenerative Organic Agriculture | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:40:20

Jeff Tkach captivated me when I heard him speak about the direct impact our soil diversity has on human health. Then when he said we only have enough topsoil for 60 more growing seasons I knew we had to talk. Jeff is in a unique position to speak about it as the Chief Impact Officer for the Rodale Institute the birthplace of the term regenerative organic. Robert Rodale, coined the term “regenerative organic” to distinguish a kind of farming that goes beyond sustainable. Regenerative organic agriculture not only maintains resources but improves them. With only about 60 years of topsoil remaining at current practices, nothing less will do. There is so much to learn from Jeff that we will definitely have him on again but in this conversation you will learn why we need to pay attention to our soil and the answers to our looming catastrophe. Plus, so much more that the Rodale Institute has to offer including the first ever Regenerative Health Institute and how they transformed the plates of patients at a large local hospital. As Chief Impact Officer, Jeff leads the development and execution of the Institute's core strategies, overseeing opportunities for partnership and co-investment that drive positive outcomes for Rodale's philanthropic and programmatic initiatives. A Pennsylvania native, Tkach earned a degree in business marketing from Kutztown University and a post graduate "Authentic Leadership Certificate: from Naropa University in Boulder, CO. He regularly speaks at various industry organizations on behalf of Rodale Institute, in an effort to catalyze the human connection to regenerative organic agriculture and its ability to heal the world.  Mindset of Labeling: Does It Help or Hurt Us? | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:43:56

Have you ever considered that labels could be helpful at times OR are labels always harmful? Anthony and Dr. Laurie take a deep dive into the mindset of labels. It was an important topic at their first Plant Based Living Conference. Labels can be as simple or complex. What does it mean to be a diabetic? Does it just mean you have a disease or do you now identify yourself with the disease label? This could have a profound effect on how receptive we are to the possibilities of changing that label. As humans we are comfortable with the known even if it is unhealthy for us. Hope you enjoy this deep dive and we hope you find it helpful and insightful. Do you want to learn more about the whole food plant based diet? Check out http://healthyhumanrevolution.com. We have all the resources you could ever need to eat the healthiest diet on the planet. As always thank you for listening and please share this podcast with anyone you think could benefit from it.
