Meet Dr. Steven Lawenda, family medicine physician and now a teacher to many how food is your medicine. Dr. Lawenda has an inspiring story of his own healing and how his own journey of finding health created a passion to help others. Dr. Lawenda also shares some absolutely unbelievable stories of healing with us including a diabetic who saved his foot from amputation and how a woman who gained her life after no longer requiring renal dialysis. He attended college at UC Berkeley and medical school at UC Davis. Attended Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island for his internship and residency. Faith, spirituality, theology and their affect on health has long been a fascination of mine so when I found Dr. Harold Koenig I knew I needed to interview him. Dr. Koenig completed his undergraduate education at Stanford University, nursing school at San Joaquin Delta College, medical school training at the University of California at San Francisco, and geriatric medicine, psychiatry, and biostatistics training at Duke University Medical Center. He is currently board certified in general psychiatry, and formerly boarded in family medicine, geriatric medicine, and geriatric psychiatry, and is on the faculty at Duke as Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Koenig is Director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center, and has published extensively in the fields of mental health, geriatrics, and religion, with over 500 scientific peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and nearly 50 books in print or preparation. His research on religion, health and ethical issues in medicine has been featured on dozens of national and international TV news programs (including ABC’s World News Tonight, Dr. Oz Show, and several times on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and NBC Nightly News), over a hundred national or international radio programs, and hundreds of newspapers and magazines (including Reader's Digest, Parade Magazine, Newsweek, Time, and Guidepost). Dr. Koenig has given testimony before the U.S. Senate (1998) and U.S. House of Representatives (2008) concerning the benefits of religion and spirituality on public health, and travels widely to give seminars and workshops on this topic. His latest book, You are My Beloved. Really?, examines the evidence for God's love from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu perspectives based largely on the sacred scriptures from these traditions. Meet Dr. Wayne Dysinger who was born and raised in Loma Linda and Yucaipa. He completed medical school at Loma Linda University, followed by a Family Medicine Residency at Florida Hospital, and a Preventive Medicine Residency back at Loma Linda. He has worked in Guam, Atlanta and New Hampshire prior to returning to Loma Linda University as Chair of the Preventive Medicine Department in 2003. Dr. Dysinger has an international reputation as a leader in the field of Lifestyle Medicine, having served as President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and as an international consultant in the area. He is also the Medical Director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute, and a Professor at Loma Linda University. He is passionate about treating what is really causing health problems, not just putting Band-Aids on superficial issues. About 4 years ago, she was overweight and sick with borderline high blood pressure, the beginning stages of fatty liver disease, among other things. She struggled for years trying to lose weight and exhausted just about every weight loss option that she could find. She would manage to lose some weight but continued to feel ill. She then read The China Study, that changed her life forever. Within weeks of transitioning so a whole foods plant based diet she began to drop weight and reversed her fatty liver disease along with everything else that ailed her. She has lost a total of 158 pounds since then and appeared in People magazine. She went on to create Kitchen Verde, a whole foods plant based diet home delivery program. So it is easy to see that beyond being beautiful she is a caring soul who wants to spread health to her patients and community.
