Toni Okamoto is the founder of Plant Based on a Budget, the popular website, food blog, and meal plan that shows you how to save dough by eating veggies. She’s also the author of The Super Easy Vegan Slow Cooker Cookbook, and the co-author of The Friendly Vegan Cookbook. Plant Based on a Budget has been featured in Reader’s Digest, US News and World Report, and more. Toni is also a regular presence on the FOX affiliate in Sacramento, where she teaches viewers how to break their meat habit without breaking their budget, and she also appears in the popular documentary, What the Health. There are a lot of reasons to eat more plants, and a lot of misconceptions about what that means. What Toni does at Plant-Based on a Budget is to show how affordable, easy, and delicious eating a plant-based diet can be, how you don’t have to shop at specialty grocery stores or restock your pantry with all kinds of unfamiliar products and substitutes, and, most of all, how you don’t have to sacrifice time, taste, or money in the pursuit of healthier, tastier eating. Toni was an absolute delight to speak to and I hope you enjoy and learn as much as I do that eating healthy can be done on a very tight budget. Disillusioned with the unsustainable, reactionary, “sick-care” nature of conventional medicine, Dr. Casey Means (MD) LEFT her ENT surgical residency in her 5th and final year in order to devote her life and practice to Functional Medicine, and to help lead the movement towards a more sustainable model of healthcare. On this episode, she shares about why she walked away from surgery, what it really means to “fix” a disease and our skewed perspective of what is considered “heroic” in conventional medicine, and why a “food is medicine” approach is the future of healthcare. Through Functional Medicine, she draws on her background in genetics, systems and network biology, and a passion for nutrition to help patients understand the root-causes underlying disease. She aims to shift the paradigm to practicing medicine in a way that restores biologic functioning and empowers patients to “heal from within” through evidence based approaches in diet and lifestyle, rather than just symptom management. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from Stanford University, where she was class president, published numerous peer reviewed articles, and was awarded the university’s top Human Biology research award. She writes about plant based nutrition on her Instagram account @drcaseyskitchen, and sees patients in her Functional Medicine private practice in Oregon (and soon to be seeing patients in California, as well). You can find more information about her practice at http://www.caseymeansmd.com. I hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did! Please check out her site and if you want more help on how to get started on the plant based diet, how to raise healthy children, recipes and much more check us out at http://healthyhumanrevolution.com.
Health care professionals - from doctors to therapists to coaches – are starting to understand that mindfulness can be an effective new tool to help their patients overcome health issues, build healthier habits, and create better long-term outcomes. But what exactly *is* mindfulness? What is the evidence behind it? What conditions does it help with? And how do you introduce it to your patients or clients in a way that fits into your already busy schedule? Dr. Brewer put together a new 7-module video course to answer these questions. https://www.drjud.com/health-care-provider-course/ The course will help primary care and other health care providers understand how our brains form unhealthy habits that lead to common yet difficult to treat conditions such as obesity and anxiety, what mindfulness is (and isn’t), how mindfulness works in the brain to effect behavior change, what the current evidence base is behind it, how it can help us “hack” our brains for better health, and how you can apply the learnings to your patients. Even if you are not a healthcare provider you will learn from this series. I encourage everyone to check it out. Thanks, as always for listening and don't forget to check us out at http://healthyhumanrevolution.com for free stuff, join the Healthy Human Nation, get free recipes and see what we are up to next!
This is a story of a mother on a mission. A mission to to change an industry and a culture. Meet Audrey Sanchez, Executive Director and Founder of Balanced. This story begins with the birth of Audrey's daughter and the pull to make the world a better place for her. Becoming a mother changed everything for her including a shift of her focus shifted to public health and our food system. As a former educator, she knew firsthand the impact that nutrition has on the quality of a child's life. She watched parents struggle to feed their children well in a food system designed to create disease with highly processed foods. Hence came the motivation to change things and the birth of Balanced.org, a place to learn how every day parents can learn how to advocate for healthy school meals. I had such a wonderful conversation with Audrey, learning about her mission and drive to help others. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Please learn more at http://balanced.org. “Health is having a body that moves without pain, breathes without distress and allows us to perform the activities of life with complete presence and focused energy. Then, we can love fully and enjoy our lives to the fullest.” - Dr. Michael Klaper Dr. Michael Klaper is a gifted clinician, internationally-recognized teacher, and sought-after speaker on diet and health. Dr. Klaper is an author and has produced numerous health videos, webinars and dozens of articles for both scientific journals and the popular press. He has practiced medicine around the world most recently at True North in California. But now he has been called to follow a new horizon, in awakening tomorrow’s young physicians to the power of plant-based healing. All who seek to heal — patients and practitioners alike — must start with the reality that our daily food choices can either foster good health or spawn dangerous diseases. Yet, most Western-trained physicians practice medicine as if what our patients are eating has no effect upon the diseases they seek to cure. The Moving Medicine Forward initiative is bringing the revolutionary ideas of disease reversal through plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine to medical schools across the country! In this interview Dr. Klaper and I discuss his journey and his current focus of leading a new generation of physicians. I hope you enjoy this delightful conversation as much as I did because Dr. Klaper is a rare kind and humble soul. Please stop by http://doctorklaper.com to learn about the Moving Medicine Forward movement and how you can help! Dr. Jud Brewer (MD PhD) is one of my favorite people to interview because I learn so much with every conversation. Dr. Brewer is a cofounder of MindSciences, and his work is focused on the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery”, combining over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training and a career in scientific research. He is passionate about understanding how our brains work, and how to use that knowledge to help people make deep, permanent change in their lives — with the goal of reducing suffering in the world at large. Dr. Jud is the Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center and associate professor in psychiatry at the School of Medicine at Brown University, as well as a research affiliate at MIT. Before that, he held research and teaching positions at Yale University and the University of Massachusetts’ Center for Mindfulness. In this conversation we talk about everybody's everyday addictions...yes you read that right...you have addictions as do I and Dr. Brewer has a brilliant way for us to identify them and conquer them. Many of you may have heard or seen the documentaries, Earthlings and Unity, but you may not know much about the man behind them, Shaun Monson. Shaun is a California native who wanted to be a filmmaker and in 1999 founded the company Nation Earth. (http://www.nationearth.com) The title of the company signifies the intention of his content — projects that bring the world together. He has finished two documentaries of a trilogy. EARTHLINGS is a film for Animals, released in 2005. The definitive animal rights film narrated by three-time Academy Award Nominee Joaquin Phoenix and featuring music by Moby. UNITY, a film for Humankind, released in 2015. The sequel to EARTHLINGS featuring a cast of 100 celebrity narrators. It is a film on the subject of duality, (i.e., why humans can’t get along with each other, the animals, or their environment). Then the final documentary will be BEINGS, a film for Nature, to be released in 2020. This was an incredible conversation that was inspiring, thought provoking and enjoyable!
