Toni Okamoto: Plant Based on a Budget | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:01:11

Toni Okamoto is the founder of Plant Based on a Budget, the popular website, food blog, and meal plan that shows you how to save dough by eating veggies. She’s also the author of The Super Easy Vegan Slow Cooker Cookbook, and the co-author of The Friendly Vegan Cookbook. Plant Based on a Budget has been featured in Reader’s Digest, US News and World Report, and more. Toni is also a regular presence on the FOX affiliate in Sacramento, where she teaches viewers how to break their meat habit without breaking their budget, and she also appears in the popular documentary, What the Health. There are a lot of reasons to eat more plants, and a lot of misconceptions about what that means. What Toni does at Plant-Based on a Budget is to show how affordable, easy, and delicious eating a plant-based diet can be, how you don’t have to shop at specialty grocery stores or restock your pantry with all kinds of unfamiliar products and substitutes, and, most of all, how you don’t have to sacrifice time, taste, or money in the pursuit of healthier, tastier eating. Toni was an absolute delight to speak to and I hope you enjoy and learn as much as I do that eating healthy can be done on a very tight budget.  Dr. Casey Means: Having Courage to Follow Your Purpose | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:11:34

Disillusioned with the unsustainable, reactionary, “sick-care” nature of conventional medicine, Dr. Casey Means (MD) LEFT her ENT surgical residency in her 5th and final year in order to devote her life and practice to Functional Medicine, and to help lead the movement towards a more sustainable model of healthcare. On this episode, she shares about why she walked away from surgery, what it really means to “fix” a disease and our skewed perspective of what is considered “heroic” in conventional medicine, and why a “food is medicine” approach is the future of healthcare. Through Functional Medicine, she draws on her background in genetics, systems and network biology, and a passion for nutrition to help patients understand the root-causes underlying disease. She aims to shift the paradigm to practicing medicine in a way that restores biologic functioning and empowers patients to “heal from within” through evidence based approaches in diet and lifestyle, rather than just symptom management. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from Stanford University, where she was class president, published numerous peer reviewed articles, and was awarded the university’s top Human Biology research award. She writes about plant based nutrition on her Instagram account @drcaseyskitchen, and sees patients in her Functional Medicine private practice in Oregon (and soon to be seeing patients in California, as well). You can find more information about her practice at I hope you enjoyed this conversation as much as I did!  Dr. Jud Brewer: The Cure for Burnout | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 00:40:17

Health care professionals - from doctors to therapists to coaches – are starting to understand that mindfulness can be an effective new tool to help their patients overcome health issues, build healthier habits, and create better long-term outcomes. But what exactly *is* mindfulness? What is the evidence behind it? What conditions does it help with? And how do you introduce it to your patients or clients in a way that fits into your already busy schedule? Dr. Brewer put together a new 7-module video course to answer these questions. The course will help primary care and other health care providers understand how our brains form unhealthy habits that lead to common yet difficult to treat conditions such as obesity and anxiety, what mindfulness is (and isn’t), how mindfulness works in the brain to effect behavior change, what the current evidence base is behind it, how it can help us “hack” our brains for better health, and how you can apply the learnings to your patients. Even if you are not a healthcare provider you will learn from this series. I encourage everyone to check it out. Thanks, as always for listening and don't forget to check us out at for free stuff, join the Healthy Human Nation, get free recipes and see what we are up to next!
