EP 378: Depredation Mountain Goat Hunt with Stephen Rosso | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:06

Today is an epic podcast with another under the radar killer in Wyoming. Stephen Rosso straight up gets after it in the backcountry with a pile of elk and deer to show for it. When Wyoming announced that they were planning to wipe out the Mountain Goats that were threating the Bighorns in the Teton Range Stephen threw his name in the hat. This hunt was no walk in easy picking, with very few goats even out of the park odds on this hunt were some of the lowest out there. Call it luck or skill Stephen turned up a great billy before the season and the hunt turned out to be one that he will not soon forget. Huge shout out to Phelps game calls, makers of the finest elk calls out there and to Backcountry Fuel Box for making this podcast happen. Stephen is actually a subscriber of the box and has been since day one. We got to talking after the podcast and he was telling me how much he loves getting the box every month. We just shipped out a pile of August boxes but we do have a few leftover boxes so if you sign up for a subscription now we will ship you out an August Box right away and you will get your September Box on the September 20th. Also, we are giving away a Phelps Unleashed Tube and two elk reeds every week on my The Weekly Bugle, my weekly email about what I am up, to the gear I am testing, or probably most popular what songs I am listening to. So if you want to win some free Phelps calls and get a short, sweet, to the point email about what I am up to, sign up for The Weekly Bugle and therichoutdoors.net/bugle Show Notes:  Introduction & Background – 0:04:07 Scouting with Overlapping Deer & Elk Tags – 0:17:32 Wyoming Non-Res Wilderness Restrictions – 0:24:16 Scouting with an October Muley Tag – 0:27:32 Stephen’s Unlimited Goat Hunt – 0:31:41 After the Kill & the Pack Out – 1:01:10 Worried About Grizzlies? – 1:08:24 Pack Animals vs. Boots – 1:15:19 Advice for Backcountry Hunting – 1:21:47 Stephen’s Instagram – 1:30:04

EP 376: Epic Stories and Adventures from Jon Chatelain the Tattoo Artist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:17:19

Finding human gravesites, plane wrecks, and getting your deer stolen from a grizzly is just a few of the epic stories in today’s podcast with one of the most badass guests I have had on in a long time. My favorite guests are always people who have lived a lot of life, today’s guest meets that criteria and then some. Jon Chatelain (@jonnyhunt) is a Tatto artist from the Salt Lake area that just happens to be a badass hunter who spends a ton of his off time in the mountains. Every once in a while you meet someone who just seems to have been through a lot more random life experiences than one would think was normal, Jon is that guy. On top of the random crazy life experience and purchasing of human body parts, Jon is also a great hunter and has one hell of an epic hunt from last year that envolves killing a giant buck and point-blank range. You aren’t going to want to miss this one! Welcome to the podcast, today I am joined by my buddy Brad Brooks of Argali Outdoors. In this episode, Brad and I chat about our parallel lives of living with newborns and the anticipation of the upcoming season. Welcome to the podcast and a special one at that. I’m not going to waste any time and just jump right into it today. This podcast is Call companion episode. It is designed so that you can call alongside and practice some of your elk calls on your way to work or wherever you practice your calls and drive your significant other crazy. This podcast is 100% in thanks to Phelps Games Calls and in fact, the star of the show is Dirk Durham an excellent caller and not even too bad of a person either.  EP 372: Persistence Kills with Derik Henderson | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:05

In today’s podcast, I am chatting with an under the radar killer from Wyoming who has some great advice and even better stories. Derik probably kills as many elk as anyone who self proclaims not to care about elk hunting. I love these types of guys who are just passionate about hunting and not worried about doing things for the gram. To set the stage for this podcast, let me just say than a good friend of Deriks told me that I need to ask him about “Women’s shoes, Underwear, and killing bulls under the meat pole.” My response was something to the effect of “is that one story or three?” I let you find out in the podcast but let’s just say you won’t be disappointed. Get your note pad out because Mark Livesay is about to drop some knowledge on you guys. Last year Mark and I recorded a two-hour podcast about e-scouting and using all of the tools available today. There was still so much we didn’t get to cover due to time so this time around we skipped past the formalities and got right down to the meat and potatoes, finding elk. We reposted that first podcast yesterday if you want to dive into that one first. I am reposting this podcast that Mark and I did back in June of last year because tomorrow we have a part two of sorts to this episode. In this episode, Mark and I ran out of time before we really go to the good stuff so when Mark was at the house we recorded a part II where we skip over most of what we talked about in this podcast and dive into actually finding elk. If you have not listened to this one yet I recommend it though you do not have to still get a lot out of tomorrows podcast. (#repost) EP 240: Today we have podcast gold for you. People message me from time to time to tell me, “this is the stuff you’re not supposed to talk about”. Mark Livesay has E-Scouting down to a science with some truly great secrets up his sleeve. Get your pad and pin ready boys and girls, you are going to want to take notes. Today I want to go over a few of the things I am thinking about in planning my upcoming season. First and foremost I want to say that this is just the way I do things and in no way am I say that it is better or worse than the way other people plan their hunts and year. This year, in particular, there has been a pile of questions coming in and I wanted to record this podcast as a way to maybe answer some of those or maybe just help other with how I think about some of these things. In an upcoming episode We are going to talk about hunt plans, and really get into the weeds with that level of planning, but today I wanna talk more about tips I use for getting my life and work in order so allow myself more time to hunt each year. PUBLIC DISCLAIMER: I am in no way responsible for any actions or attempts at getting your significant other to increase the appropriate time allotted toward hunting activities. Nor am I to be mentioned in any future conversations regarding where these ideas came from. Overall this podcast is full of some useful tips to help you get more out of each fall.  EP 364: How to Go From a 101 to 201 Level Elk Hunter Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:59

Back in early May Jaden Bales, my right-hand man, jumped on the podcast to talk about taking his hunting skills from that 101 level up to a 201 level. This conversation actually sparked quite a topic for us as we really have expanded on this idea over the last couple of months. Since that podcast, we actually put out a 201 mini-course and are working on a 201 gun build. In this podcast, we expand further on what we talked about but also we continue in Jaden’s search to kill a bull elk with his bow. As scouting moves from e-scouting to boots on the ground we go over some of the things Jaden has found my advice on how to interpret and plan based on what he has been seeing.  Ep 360: Brendon Weaver of Maven Optics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:44

In today’s podcast, I am joined by Brendon Weaver one of the founders of Maven Optics. As a fellow entrepreneur Brendon has an amazing story and like most successful entrepreneurs a very interesting journey to where he is at now. Born and raised in small-town Wyoming, I don’t think Brendon ever dreamed of owning something like Maven Optics, yet sometimes life opens a very strange set of doors along the way. In this episode, Brendon shares the journey to where he is at and some of the better choices he made along to the way that helped create this rapidly growing high-end optics company. Brendon and I do talk far more about entrepreneurship than hunting in this podcast, but there are some really great life lessons nested throughout the show. Solo Targets are an archery target allow you to practice on a truly life-size, hyper-realistic target. Here is why I like Solo Targets, besides the fact that I get to shoot at giant bulls every day. The Solo Target is a hyper-realistic skin that can be used in conjunction with pretty much any block or target you already have. The solo skin also forces you into a much more real-life scenario where you have to pick a spot on the animal and not a circle on a target. Solo Targets has launched a bunch of new targets this year and you can pick whatever species you want from elk, sheep, ibex, deer, you name it.
