Finding Our Hunger show

Finding Our Hunger

Summary: Do you hate your body? Are you tired of dieting or emotional eating? Are you obsessed with food, nutrition, and exercise? Maybe it’s time to unpack your bags and start on a brand new journey to health, wellness, and positive body image. Each week Kaila Prins meets with the experts in fitness, nutrition, health at every size, eating disorder recovery, addiction, and more to chart the path toward self-esteem and body positivity. We believe that hunger can be physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, abstract or real. Hunger can be sated through nutrition, through story, through community, through support, through fitness, through sharing, and through self-reflection...through un-doing the lies we've told ourselves about how hunger truly feels. We welcome you to join this community of fellow-travelers who gather together to unpack our bags and unashamedly air what we find inside. We look back at the past only to gain awareness of where we are so we can muster the courage to un-map the uncertainty of our future travels–together. We join hands–and stories–as we walk, unafraid, on the path to finally finding our hunger. “Our deeds still travel with us from afar, and what we have been makes us what we are.”- George Eliot “Human beings are not born once and for all on the day their mothers give birth to them, but … life obliges them over and over again to give birth to themselves.” ― Gabriel García Márquez Today’s guest is Karen Parrott, who blogs about weight maintenance and Paleo/Primal nutrition at gardengirlkp.blogspot.com. In today’s episode we discuss: * What a “mini-binge” is & why they’re so hard to quit * How to gain freedom from “diet legalism” * Why rules can sometimes help you escape disordered eating And we discuss how gaining a new honesty about food can help you get off the sinking ship of diet disasters. If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much. – Jim Rohn One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.–Virginia Woolf Today’s guest is Liz Wolfe, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner certified by the Nutritional Therapy Association, the author of the forthcoming, must-buy Eat the Yolks, and (in my opinion!) an all-around positivity machine. In this episode, we discuss: * How we tell our stories—about body image, health, relationships, and our lives—and how that affects how we cope with the present and plan for the future * Whether or not being Type-A or goal-oriented is a blessing or a curse * The difference between “anxious” and “eager” and between “standards” and “ideas” And we discuss why you should learn to either reel in the fish or just start enjoying the process of fishing! “It’s not about the weight. It’s never been about the weight. When a pill is discovered that allows people to eat whatever they want and not gain weight, the feelings and situations they turned to food to avoid will still be there, and they will find other more inventive ways to numb themselves.” —Geneen Roth Today’s guest is Jennifer Fugo, certified Health Coach and founder of Gluten Free School, a website dedicated to teaching gluten-sensitive individuals commonsense, simple and powerful steps to get healthy. We discuss: * Why people struggle to make a change, even when their health is at stake * What it’s like to “break up” with your family’s food traditions * Why you need to say “take care”—and mean it! * Why taking care of yourself first is the least selfish act And, of course, we dissect the discourse around restriction and health.
