Finding Our Hunger show

Finding Our Hunger

Summary: Do you hate your body? Are you tired of dieting or emotional eating? Are you obsessed with food, nutrition, and exercise? Maybe it’s time to unpack your bags and start on a brand new journey to health, wellness, and positive body image. Each week Kaila Prins meets with the experts in fitness, nutrition, health at every size, eating disorder recovery, addiction, and more to chart the path toward self-esteem and body positivity. We believe that hunger can be physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, abstract or real. Hunger can be sated through nutrition, through story, through community, through support, through fitness, through sharing, and through self-reflection...through un-doing the lies we've told ourselves about how hunger truly feels. We welcome you to join this community of fellow-travelers who gather together to unpack our bags and unashamedly air what we find inside. We look back at the past only to gain awareness of where we are so we can muster the courage to un-map the uncertainty of our future travels–together. We join hands–and stories–as we walk, unafraid, on the path to finally finding our hunger. (Literally. He’s shoed horses and flown planes and run restaurants…and so much more.) In the podcast, we ask: * Do you have the “Someday Disease?”  * Are you talking about your guitar or are you playing it?  * What kind of fire are you carrying in your bags?  Hang out until the end of the podcast and you’ll hear the title track from Billy’s album Better Angels.  If you want to get in touch with Billy (or order the CD), head over to billyabel.com or connect with him on facebook.  UN-Podcast 021: UNending (Jimmy Moore) @livinlowcarbman - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:57

“I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.”–Lillian Smith “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself”–Leo Tolstoy I’m pretty sure that, after this podcast, I’m changing my vacation plans, leaving my bags at home, and booking the next flight to Australia. Jimmy Moore is THAT influential, people. And the funny thing is, he’s working hard NOT to be an expert or a guru, but rather just the wonderfully relatable, hard working human being he is to serve as an example and help re-shape the health of our nation (and other nations–see: Australia, for one!) I haven’t known him for long, but I feel like he’s an indelible part of my journey and hopefully, if he isn’t already, an important addition to yours. His journey is unending, as are all of our journeys, and he’s a heck of a sherpa to have if you’re planning on stepping into previously uncharted territory of health and wellbeing.  UN-Podcast 020: UNbound (Marilyn Olmsted) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:28

“The journey not the arrival matters.” – T. S. Eliot “The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.” – G.K. So here’s the thing: when it comes to communicating about nutrition, we’re not always speaking the same language. Sometimes, that’s literally the case, and my good friend Marilyn Olmsted is about to make a major life change in order to become the missing translator. In today’s episode, we discuss what it means to become unbound from expectation–to leave your bags in the closet and just go take the first steps along your journey. Marilyn is about to leave behind the bags filled with her family business and her already established success in order to forge a new path in helping her community learn how to speak the language of nutrition and health. You can become Marilyn’s friend on Facebook (more social media and websites to come, once her health coaching business is off and running!), and you can learn more about her at inmyskinnygenes.com. You can also read up on what Ito’s been up to over at theoverachievingliar.com. As always, you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher Radio, and we’d love to hear your feedback! Stay hungry, @MissSkinnyGenes PS to listen to the CD that Marilyn and I discuss at the beginning of the podcast, go check out our good friend Billy Abel’s site and order a copy of Better Angels now! (I don’t get any money for saying that, by the way. Billy’s just awesome, and his music is really fantastic. So there.) [img source]

 UN-Podcast 019: UNtimed (Madelyn Moon) @mindbodymusings - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:14

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness and fears.” – Cesare Pavese “To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye I am constantly amazed by how much strength and wisdom some of our younger guests already possess. The case is no different with today’s guest, who is freshly graduated from undergrad and just beginning an incredible journey to becoming a health coach with a thriving business. Madelyn Moon (who, by the way, has the coolest name ever!) has learned how to develop a healthy relationship with her own body after having dealt with the critiques of competition judges, and she’s setting out on a mission to help others find the balance between a desire for strength, beauty, and a potential chance at the competition stage and their own relationship with and love for their bodies. Take a listen and then go connect with Madelyn at moonfitness.net, follow her @moonfitness on twitter or instagram, or like her at facebook.com/moonfitness. You can also join me at inmyskinnygenes.com (where I’ve posted more about the lovely Madelyn Moon!) and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com… And, of course, you can subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher Radio, so you’ll never miss an episode.  UNPodcast 018: UNStoppable (Abel James) @fatburnman - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:08

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.”– Lin Yutang “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma–which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.” –Steve Jobs I feel like…if I gush about our guests anymore on this blog, you’re going to stop believing me when I tell you how incredible they are. But I swear this podcast is going to blow your mind. Ever been curious about what Abel James is writing in his notebook? In today’s podcast, he shares what he’s been writing–as well as some absolutely on-point, earth-shattering, mindset shifting thoughts about eating well without driving yourself nuts, getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, and why we should be more like Bill Russell, the basketball player who lost his lunch before every game. You can learn more about Abel (and listen to his amazing podcast) by visiting fatburningman.com, or sign up to become a part of his coaching circle by joining leanbodycommunity.com. You can also connect with him on Facebook or Twitter, if you’re so inclined (and you should be!).  UN-Podcast 017: UNPlanned (Kira Olson) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:20

Though you cannot go back and have a brand new start, you can start now and have a brand new end. — John Maxwell The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen I don’t even know how to best introduce today’s guest because she is such a force of nature that she seems to speak for herself. Kira Olson is so many things to so many people–a role model who has her stuff together in ways we can only hope to emulate. Her bags are packed with faith and hope, and for all of the patches they’ve accumulated in her many travels, they stand as a shining example for the people she helps through addiction, disorder, and self-doubt. You can reach Kira at klynnolson[at]gmail[dot]com if you’d like to give her a shout-out. And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher Radio!  UN-Podcast 016: UNnamed (Akshaya Shivkumar) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:49

“I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.” –Lillian Smith “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” –Henry Miller Matter cannot be created or destroyed–and neither can the indefatigable spirit of today’s podcast guest, the girl whose very name means the opposite of destruction: Akshaya Shivkumar. Akshaya is a traveler in every sense of the word–she is no tourist, come to see the sights and leave, but a true connoisseur of culture. And the best part? Her journey is only just beginning. You can connect with her on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter–or check out her blog, opalodyssey.wordpress.com. Here is one of Akshaya’s favorite quotes, to get you geared up for this awesome episode: “You see things; you say, ‘Why?’ But I dream things that never were; and I say ‘Why not?”  ― George Bernard Shaw (Don’t forget to subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher Radio so you won’t miss a podcast!)  UN-Podcast 015: UNlearning (Ariel Prins) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:05

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are…” – Unknown “I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.” – Rosalia de Castro It’s hard to hear a friend talk about the first time she gave in to an eating disorder. It’s devastating when it’s your own sister. This week on the podcast, my little sister, Ariel Prins, talks about life after college, life with a navy boyfriend, and life post-eating disorder. This is actually the first time I’ve ever heard how her disorder began, which was more than a little intense. Ariel is incredibly mature for her age (and, no, I don’t think she’s as much of a “grandma” as she says she is!). Give her a listen and check out the blog post (with pictures!) at In My Skinny Genes. And, as always, make sure you never miss a podcast by subscribing to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! & come say hello to me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com. Also! If you’re in the New York City area, go show Ito some love by seeing her show, the Obeah Symphony, in its final weekend! Details at http://www.thebillieholiday.org/ Stay hungry, @MissSkinnyGenes PS At one point in the interview, I call my sister “Nell.” Just so you’re not confused, it’s a nickname from a childhood game of make-believe that’s just stuck around for one reason or another.

 UN-Podcast 014: UNClear (Hadass Eviatar) @hadasseviatar - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 49:28

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” –Jawaharial Nehru “If it scares you, it might be a good thing try.” One of the common threads that often comes up in our discussions with guests is direction. Where is this journey taking us and why are we following this particular road? Today’s guest is Hadass Eviatar, whose self-reinvention is an ongoing process. Wife, mother, blogger, scientist, teacher, and friend, Hadass’s passport has collected–both metaphorically and in actuality. I love today’s podcast because Hadass is so candid about her professional hunger and her work to satiate it. She’s a truly good soul, and I’m so glad that our respective journeys ended up bringing us together. After you listen, go check out the “My Coat of Many Colors” blog at hadasseviatar.com and sign up for her newsletter. And be sure to send her some love @HadassEviatar on Twitter! And, as always, make sure you never miss a podcast by subscribing to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! & come say hello to me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com.
