Finding Our Hunger show

Finding Our Hunger

Summary: Do you hate your body? Are you tired of dieting or emotional eating? Are you obsessed with food, nutrition, and exercise? Maybe it’s time to unpack your bags and start on a brand new journey to health, wellness, and positive body image. Each week Kaila Prins meets with the experts in fitness, nutrition, health at every size, eating disorder recovery, addiction, and more to chart the path toward self-esteem and body positivity. We believe that hunger can be physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, abstract or real. Hunger can be sated through nutrition, through story, through community, through support, through fitness, through sharing, and through self-reflection...through un-doing the lies we've told ourselves about how hunger truly feels. We welcome you to join this community of fellow-travelers who gather together to unpack our bags and unashamedly air what we find inside. We look back at the past only to gain awareness of where we are so we can muster the courage to un-map the uncertainty of our future travels–together. We join hands–and stories–as we walk, unafraid, on the path to finally finding our hunger.  UN-Podcast 013: UNintentional (Andrea Feucht) @abqandrea - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:49

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill “Too often. . .I would hear men boast of the miles covered that day, rarely of what they had seen.” – Louis L’Amour Have you ever had a conversation over the phone with a friend that gets you so fired up with inspiration that the second you hang up, you feel like leaping into action and…doing? This week’s podcast was a lot  like that. Our guest was my friend Andrea Feucht, writer, foodie, and extreme athlete. She has a penchant for words, a handle on nutrition, and a serious hunger for growth, development, and recovery. In this episode, we talk about some pretty deep issues related to eating disorders and extreme exercise, and Andrea talks about why, sometimes, we just need to eat the ice cream.* You all DEFINITELY need to give this one a listen. It’s a game-changer, a mind-blower, and all sort of other contractions that express how jazzed up I am about this week’s episode. And then go out and create an intentional community, like the Paleo Women’s Brain Trust. Check out Andrea’s writing at andreaworks.com.  UN-Podcast 012: UNbroken (Ito & Kaila) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 34:21

“If you do not change direction, you may end up where you are heading.” – Lao Tzu  “A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu It’s been a long week. From getting hit by a car to dealing with the vulnerability that comes with opening up to a new relationship, Ito and I have had shouldered some pretty heavy bags this week. We’ll be back with a guest next week, but this week, we wanted to take the opportunity to unpack our own bags and ask, “What pain am I scared to live with? And what pain does it hurt most to avoid?” Make sure you never miss a podcast by subscribing to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! & Find me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com.  Un-Podcast 011: UNcompromising (Kyoung Park) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:42

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.” – Tim Cahill “Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky – all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” – Cesare Pavese I am always amazed by how candid people can be–and how easy candidness becomes once you realize that living your truth is the only way. This week, we interviewed Kyoung Park, a gay Korean playwright who was raised in Chile and has spent years trying to create art that not only tells his truth but also convinces the US government that he is worthy of a visa. Ito and I met Kyoung in grad school, where he was already hard at work negotiating the internal and external political struggles that have colored his life as an artist, a son, a citizen, a lover, a person. Kyoung is not only incredibly talented, but also beautifully forthright. This week’s episode will grant you insight into a journey that involves more than physical hunger–although being a starving artist certainly means that physical hunger is present too. You can learn more about Kyoung and sign up for his newsletter at kyounghpark.com and support his theatre company, Pacific Beat Collective, by liking their Facebook page! And, as always, you can make sure you never miss a podcast by subscribing to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! & you can find me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com.)  UN-Podcast 010: UNStuck (Stefani Ruper) @PaleoforWomen - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:57

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” – Martin Buber “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” – Ralph Waldo Emerson Every so often, a person comes into your life who reaffirms everything you ever knew while challenging everything you ever knew. I first learned about Stefani Ruper through a a desperate internet search for remedies for PCOS and hormone imbalance. And when it comes to the Paleo for Women blog, I say I came for the science but stayed for the soul. Stefani is an incredibly enlightened being whose views on self-image, self-love, spirituality, sexuality, and the junction of nutrition and mindset are nothing short of mind(set) blowing. With posts like Broken Bodies, Broken Trust interspersed between critiques of representing feminism in the nutrition world and in-depth breakdowns of why our hormones work or don’t, I can’t see why anyone would want to miss a single post. Okay, gushing aside, I think you guys will really enjoy today’s podcast with Stefani. Go give her a listen (and then check her out at PaleoforWomen.com or on Twitter @PaleoforWomen. And then download her e-book PCOS Unlocked to learn more about how your hormones work. Seriously worth a read!)  UN-Podcast 009: UNconditional (Ito & Kaila’s Moms!) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:58

A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path. – A. Christie You were my home, Mother. I had no home but you – Janet Fitch Mother. Mom. Mama. Mommy. It doesn’t matter how you say it, the word “mother” is charged. We each have a unique relationship with the woman who gave birth to us, who gave us life, whose body created our bodies–the very bodies we are still learning how to love. And yet the love the have for our mother’s is fully developed, a love that transcends the uncertainty of the body we inhabit. As we grow–into our own bodies, into our own selves–our relationships with our mothers evolve. And sometimes it’s easy to forget that our mothers are on their own journeys, still learning how to inhabit their own bodies and live with the bodies of the children they created. This past weekend–on Mother’s Day–Ito and I had the opportunity to interview each of our mothers–each woman who has a unique story about beauty and the body, nutrition and health. From Nigeria to Ardsley, New York, from body acceptance to eating disorders, our moms have some incredible stories to share with you. Go ahead and take a listen–Ito’s mom’s interview begins at 4:27 and my mom’s begins at 29:35 if you want to skip around. Have you ever talked to your mom about body image, beauty, or health? Why not have your own mother interview? If you do, let us know about your conversation in the comments below! (And don’t forget to subscribe to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! & You can find me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com.) Stay hungry & journey on!

 Un-Podcast 008: UNBurdened (George Bryant) @CookingCaveman - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:53

Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind… – M Rubin  “You don’t choose the day you enter the world and you don’t chose the day you leave. It’s what you do in between that makes all the difference.” – Anita Septimus Ever have one of those days (weeks, months) when nothing seems to go right? When it seems like, if life were a kitchen, you’d be burning your meat, spilling your vegetables all over the floor, missing the key ingredient in the recipe? Every so often, when we’re having these moments, all we really need is a fellow chef who can throw in a pinch of this or a dash of that (or make us a whole new dish!) to help make the meal a little better. Alright, so I’m a little heavy-handed on the metaphor today, but I’m feeling cheeky–mostly because, after having one of those months, Ito and I had a conversation with a man who made the night seem a little bit brighter. We are so excited to introduce you to George Bryant, the Civilized Caveman behind the brilliant and drool-worthy blog, Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations. I think this interview speaks for itself–George is one of the most inspiring and incredible individuals I have ever had the fortune to meet–and I owe him a big hug the next time our paths cross in person! We talk about some of his other appearances (and some of his recipes!) on the show as well, so here are the links to some other podcasts on which he’s been a guest. (But don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page to listen to our interview–and if you like what you hear, please subscribe to us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio and leave us a review!) Also, please let us know what you thought of the interview in the comments. If you have any questions for George, we’d be happy to convince him to come back on the show! And, as if you didn’t have enough links to click on already, you can find me at inmyskinnygenes.com and Ito at theoverachievingliar.com.  UN-Podcast 007: UN-Anchored (Kiki Baxter) @kiki_baxter - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:39

“A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.” – John Steinbeck “Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard I can’t tell you how excited I am about today’s podcast guest. Not only does she have more wisdom at the ripe old age of almost 21 than most of the “grown ups” I know, but she’s also a living example of just how incredibly complex and beautiful this journey is: Kiki Baxter is finding her anchor while still in search of a port. She’s traveling uncharted waters, unsure of where she’ll land, but moving forward with intention. Today’s podcast is all about learning to find the shift that allows you to un-live your story so that you can finally live. You can connect with Kiki on Twitter or Instagram!  UN-Podcast 006: UNlived (Jen Taher) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:26

“What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do – especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” –William Least Heat Moon “Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” –Jack Kerouac It’s been a rough week. For those of you stumbling upon this post sometime in the distant future, we recorded this most recent episode on a very dark Friday. The country’s been in a fair amount of turmoil and grief, and we know that the events in Boston and Texas have definitely thrown some new baggage toward many of our listeners. Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by the tragedies that occurred. Just know that if you ever need to reach out, we’re here to listen to your stories and offer a shoulder to cry on, a hug, and a promise to stand behind you as your pillar of strength. We are so very fortunate to have had the inimitable Jen Taher join us for this episode of the Finding Our Hunger podcast. Her candor, her humor, and her brilliance are not only incredibly entertaining, but truly insightful. This week, we discuss some pretty heavy baggage, current events, aging parents, Facebook envy, violent video games, and the muscle memory of the eyes. We’ll leave you with Jen’s quote from Tennessee Williams’ Orpheus Descending: “Take me out to Cypress Hill in my car. And we’ll hear the dead people talk. They do talk there. They chatter like birds on Cypress Hill, but all they say is one word and that one word is “live,” they say “Live, live, live, live, live.'” It’s all they’ve learned, it’s the only advice they can give.–Just live….Simple!–a very simple instruction.” (And don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review on iTunes or Stitcher Radio!) P.S. Please excuse some of the lagging & interruptions…the beauty of connecting from across the country through technology is also its downfall…Our Skype conversation had a few seconds lag in parts, so bear with us!

 UN-Podcast 005: UNscripted (Kelly Boaz) @kelly_boaz - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:08

“No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.” – Lin Yutang  “An adventure may be worn as a muddy spot or it may be worn as a proud insignia. It is the woman wearing it who makes it the one thing or the other.” – Norma Shearer  Today’s podcast brings us the insight of an incredibly beautiful soul who fought through the worst ravages of her disorder and is now working to help others overcome their negative relationships with food and body image. Kelly Boaz, creator of Fearless Nutrition, is no stranger to the scripts we write for ourselves and the parts we feel we have to play. A former actress, Kelly has been working through her fear of living an unscripted life–a life that includes confronting fear foods and taking leaps into new careers and new adventures.   To listen to her story, download the podcast below, or subscribe to the podcast and leave a review on iTunes or Stitcher Radio! “It’s time to change your ideas about food, one meal at a time.” – @kelly_boaz
