Finding Our Hunger show

Finding Our Hunger

Summary: Do you hate your body? Are you tired of dieting or emotional eating? Are you obsessed with food, nutrition, and exercise? Maybe it’s time to unpack your bags and start on a brand new journey to health, wellness, and positive body image. Each week Kaila Prins meets with the experts in fitness, nutrition, health at every size, eating disorder recovery, addiction, and more to chart the path toward self-esteem and body positivity. We believe that hunger can be physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, abstract or real. Hunger can be sated through nutrition, through story, through community, through support, through fitness, through sharing, and through self-reflection...through un-doing the lies we've told ourselves about how hunger truly feels. We welcome you to join this community of fellow-travelers who gather together to unpack our bags and unashamedly air what we find inside. We look back at the past only to gain awareness of where we are so we can muster the courage to un-map the uncertainty of our future travels–together. We join hands–and stories–as we walk, unafraid, on the path to finally finding our hunger.  UNpodcast 152: UNresearched (Dr. Sandra Aamodt) - Finding Our Hunger | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:32

The words “I am” are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to. The thing you’re claiming has a way of reaching back and claiming you.—A.L. Kitselman This week’s guest is Sandra Aamodt, Ph.D., author of the new book:  Why Diets Make Us Fat: The Unintended Consequences of Our Obsession With Weight Loss. In this episode we discuss: * The real reasons we believe that fat is unhealthy (and why it’s not) * Why we’re so lost when tells us not to diet * Why being a “dignified grownup” can lead to health problems * How to stop being such a perfectionist and go enjoy life And more! CONNECT WITH DR. AAMODT: WEBSITE: www.sandraaamodt.com BOOK: Why Diets Make Us Fat: The Unintended Consequences of Our Obsession With Weight Loss I also answer the following question: I am 6 months into recovery and have gained some much needed weight, self awareness and energy.  I am currently still working with a therapist and dietician who have both been very helpful in my discovery, as you would say. I am finally ready to open up about my struggle now that I am in a better place mentally.  My friend runs a health blog and will be releasing an article within the upcoming weeks with my before and after photo for the world to see.  Some of the people in my circle are aware of my recovery, others, not so much. My goal in sharing would be to inspire anyone else who has struggled silently, as I have for 6 years.  My question to you would be: how do I cope with the attention I may receive after opening up about it?  How did you cope when you went against the grain of “being skinny is everything and I must control my body” to sharing your new view on the world? As you know, eating disorders keep you isolated, secretive and in captivity.  So opening up about my eating disorder is not only something that ED would hate, but I feel it is also something I really want to do in order to put it behind me and free myself from.
