In this class, we will explore rabbinic sources which highlight traditional thoughts about innovation, and novice thoughts about tradition. Through these sources we will ask about the changing role of women and the place of democracy in the eyes of the Jewish tradition. הפרק הראשון בפרשת חקת עוסק במוות ובהתמודדות עם הממד המשתק שמתלווה אליו. לפרק שני חלקים; בחלק הראשון מתואר תהליך ההכנה של אפר הפרה האדומה אשר משמש לטהרה במצבים של טומאת מת (במדבר יט, א' - י"ג), וחלקו השני מציג את האופן שבו הופכים אנשים ודברים להיות טמאי מת (פסוקים י"ד ועד סוף הפרק). יחד הם קוראים לחיים להיות בתנועה בסמיכות למפגש עם המוות.

Avital Hochstein.The first chapter of Parashat Hukkat deals with death and the struggle with its potentially paralyzing dimensions. The chapter has two parts. In the first part, we hear about the process for preparing the ashes of the red heifer that serves as the vehicle for purification in cases of corpse impurity. The second part describes the ways in which people and objects contract this type of impurity. Read together, they call us to see that life must continue moving forward even as it does and must encounter and engage with death.

דרך העולם ומשנה סדרי עולם גם יחד— מותם של קורח ועדתו, שנבלעו על ידי האדמה, נתפס בדרך-כלל כעונשם של נשיאי העדה שחלקו על הנהגת משה ואהרן. אולם, דיון קצר במסכת נדרים מציע כי עונשם לא היה רק עצם העובדה שמתו, וגם לא האופן שבו מצאו את מותם, אלא דווקא סוג המוות שנמנע מהם. מתוך הדיון בתלמוד עולה לא רק פרשנות לפסוקים, אלא גם תפיסת עולם בנוגע למוות שמגיע כתוצאה מחולי.

Avital Hochstein. A Natural and Unnatural Phenomenon — The death of Korah and his band, who are swallowed up by the earth, is generally understood as a punishment for the communal leaders who challenged the authority of Moses and Aaron. A brief discussion in Tractate Nedarim of the Babylonian Talmud, however, suggests that their punishment was not merely the fact that they died, nor the gruesome path to that fate, but rather the type of death denied to them.

We honored the start of Yeshivat Hadar's 11th Summer Beit Midrash and the release of R. Ethan Tucker and R. Micha'el Rosenberg's book Gender Equality and Prayer in Jewish Law (2017) with a panel discussion and public conversation on the book. The evening explored questions and critiques of this book's approach to gender and halakhah from leading thinkers. בפרשתנו מתחולל אירוע דרמטי, שבעקבותיו הופכת תקופת המדבר מתחנת מעבר קצרה בדרך ממצרים אל ארץ כנען, לתקופה ארוכה, הנמשכת על פני דור שלם. התארכות ימי המדבר מבטיחה כי מי שיצאו ממצרים לא ייכנסו אל ארץ כנען, בכך זהו סיפור של התפתחות, ואולם, זהו לא רק סיפור התפתחותם של בני ישראל מקיבוץ רב-שבטי של עבדים אל עם המסוגל לשבת בארצו שלו, אלא גם סיפור השתנותו, לכאורה, של אלוהים: מאל המגיב באמצעות תגובות מיידיות ומונעות מרגש, אל הסדרה יסודית יותר של הקשר שבין אלוהים לאדם.

Avital Hochstein. From Exodus to Exoneration—Our parashah is defined by a dramatic event, one that transforms the desert experience from a fleeting stop on the short journey from Egypt to Israel into a lengthy period that spans a generation. The lengthening of the days in the desert indeed ensures that those who left Egypt will not enter the land. But perhaps more significantly, the desert sojourn is not just the story of a band of former slaves merging their tribal identities into the makings of a sovereign people. It also presents as the story of a changing God: one who initially responds with immediacy and emotion, but who comes to anchor the human-divine relationship in a fundamentally different way.

תיאור מבנה מסע ישראל במדבר מהווה מודל לאופן שבו על עם לנוע – בין אם זו תנועה פיזית ובין אם זו תנועה חברתית, רעיונית, רוחנית, פוליטית או מדינית. הפסוקים מלמדים על מספר מרכיבים נדרשים או ראויים על מנת להיות עם אחראי, עם מוסרי, בתנועה: תנועה עממית זקוקה לקבוצה שתדאג להשבת הסדר גם במציאות של שינוי, זקוקה לקבוצה שתגן מפני סכנות חיצוניות, זקוקה למישהו שיכיל את כולם, גם את מי שקשה עליו השינוי.

Avital Hochstein. The description of the structure of the way that Israel travelled in the wilderness presents a model of how a people should move, not just physically but also socially, intellectually, politically, and spiritually. The verses speak of a number of desirable or necessary components of what it takes to be a moral, responsible nation while in a dynamic state. A moving nation needs to have a group that is concerned with maintaining order even at times of change, needs to have a group that can defend itself against external threats, and needs to have an inclusive space, even for those for whom change is challenging.

בין משפחה להכללת האחר - במדבר פרק ה' עוסק בחובות אשם של חוטאים. הפניה היא "דַּבֵּר֘ אֶל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אִ֣ישׁ אֽוֹ־אִשָּׁ֗ה כִּ֤י יַעֲשׂוּ֙ מִכָּל־חַטֹּ֣את הָֽאָדָ֔ם … וְאָֽשְׁמָ֖ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִֽוא" (במדבר ה, ו'). לכאורה פניה שוויונית ומכלילה לכל אדם באשר הוא גוזל או חוטא. בדיון במקראי שלפנינו מתמקדים הפסוקים בבירור סוגיית הגזל בהקשר פנים-קהילתי, פנים-ישראלי, ומוקד עניינו של החוק, בפסוקים וכן במדרשים שלהלן, הוא הגדרת זהותם של מי שנפגעו, של הנגזלים. מתוך עיסוק זה עולות גם שאלות בנוגע לקווים העדינים המפרידים בין מי שמוצאים עצמם בתוך גדרי החוק או מחוצה להם.

Avital Hochstein. We find in the fifth chapter of BeMidbar a seemingly inclusive and egalitarian opening regarding any person who has robbed or sinned in any way. These verses center on robberies that occur within the community and between its members. The law focuses, in the verses themselves and the Rabbinic exposition upon them, on defining the victims of the robbery. The ensuing discussion raises questions regarding the thin line between those whom the law refers and relates to and those to whom it does not.

Avi Killip. Shavuot is the holiday of harvest. In fall we planted. For months we worried and prayed, never sure if enough rain would fall to nourish the seeds in the ground. Shavuot marks the move into a time of clarity, security, and abundance. After a cold winter, Shavuot brings with it the ease and warmth of summer. We take a collective sigh of relief and release. The holiday of Shavuot is about reaping and sharing from life’s overflowing cup.

Jason Rubenstein, Tamar Fox. The Torah forcefully insists that caring for children without parents is one of God's central demands of humanity. In this session we will place the human meanings of (not) being cared for by one's parents, and of caring for children who are not our own—alongside the Divine meanings of parenthood and parentlessness. Our central questions will be: what can Torah teach us about orphanhood, and what can the imperative to care for orphans teach us about Torah? Lecture by Rabbi Jason Rubenstein followed by a dialogue with Tamar Fox, Hadar alumna, writer, advocate, step-parent, and foster parent in Philadelphia.
