Avital Hochstein. Reading this week’s parashah raises a number of complex questions regarding how to navigate the tension between the values set forth in the text and our present-day worldview in the context of women's involvement in civil society.

Avital Hochstein. Sabbatical or Shemittah? Our parashah opens with a commandment to rest in the seventh year. We find such a commandment in the book of Shemot as well - though the two sources portray the seventh year in different terms that create distinct and unique experiences.

Avi Killip, Ruth Messinger. Again and again the Torah calls our attention—in both law and story—to the widow. Why is care for the widow so urgent? What is gained by grouping the widow with the orphan and the stranger—and what is lost? Through exploring the experience of widowhood in Jewish tradition we will uncover the complex interplay of power and powerlessness of those on the margins and ask what it means to “care for” categories of people who blur the distinction between vulnerable and empowered. Many ancient societies were preoccupied with proper treatment of the "widow" and the "orphan." But the Bible goes one step further, focusing on the widow and the orphan but also on the ger—the stranger, the immigrant, the refugee. In the Bible's vision, vulnerable insiders are to be protected from exploitation, but so also are vulnerable outsiders. In this session, we'll explore the Bible's insistence that we both protect and love the ger. Along the way, we'll discover how Jewish memory and Jewish theology come together to yield this call to radical empathy. Lecture by Rabbi Shai Held followed by a dialogue with R. פרשתנו עוסקת באחריות הקהל לשימור המרחב הציבורי. אחריות זו בונה בסופו של יום הדדיות וברית בין העם למנהיגיו. רובו של ספר ויקרא מעמיד במרכזו את אהרון ובניו ולצדם את משה, כפעילים המרכזיים האחראים על עבודת הקודש ועל המוסד הציבור שבו זו מתנהלת - המקדש. מתוך כך, היינו מצפים שמשפחת הכהונה תהיה מופקדת ואחראית גם על המרחב הציבורי שבו ובכלל. ואולם, פרשתנו מלמדת כי האחריות על מרחב זה אינה נחלתם של ההנהגה או משרתי הציבור בלבד. למעשה, קיימת תלות הדדית בין ההנהגה ושליחי הציבור לבין הקהילה בשמירה על המרחב הציבורי ועל אופיו.

Avital Hochstein. Most of Sefer VaYikra details the obligations of the Kohanim, Aharon and his Sons as well as Moshe and other members of the tribe of Levi, to maintain the Holy service and be responsible for all of its implements. We would expect that the Kohanim would continue to bear this responsibility, and be charged with the public areas as well. However, our parashah clearly teaches that the responsibility for public areas devolves on everyone, not just those who are deemed to be public servants. There is in fact, a mutual dependence between the leadership, the people’s representatives, and the community, that is the people themselves, in maintaining the public domain and its character.

Avital Hochstein. The parashiyot of Aharei-Mot and Kedoshim are full of many different types of mitzvot. One of these mitzvot is the mitzvah of orlah, which is presented as contingent upon, and connected to, the arrival to the Land. Indeed, we see this explicit connection repeatedly throughout the Torah in its exposition of other mitzvot, such as the laws of shemittah, Pesah, bikkurim (first fruits), the omer offering (first sheaf of barley), the prohibition on idolatry, and on and on. Placing mitzvot in the context of the arrival to the Land is not restricted to mitzvot which actually work the land. It is used for all types of mitzvot, interpersonal, ritual, and agricultural alike. But what is the meaning of this contextualization? What is the connection between these mitzvot and arriving and living in the Land?

פרק יג בספר ויקרא עוסק בנגעים, ובראשם בנגע הצרעת. שני פעלים חוזרים בפרק פעמים רבות: ס.ג.ר. - הפעולה שהכהן עסוק בה לצד הכרעה בדבר טומאת הנגע שמולו או טיהורו: "והסגיר הכהן את הנגע..."
