Blogging Diabetes Podcasts with Tony Rose

Summary: I (Tony Rose) launched the Blogging Diabetes Podcast back in June 2011 after blogging about diabetes for 3+ years. The goal of the podcast is to share my personal experiences about what it's really like to live with type 1 diabetes every day. I'm not a doctor or a medical professional at all, just an average guy who has been living with type 1 diabetes since 1998. @blogdiabetes on twitter

BDP 061 | Dr. Kenneth Snow Interview, Diabetic Neuropathy and My A1c | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:01

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk to doctor Kenneth Snow, Endocrinologist at Joslin Diabetes and Chief Medical Officer for Neurometrix.  We talk in length about his experience at Joslin Diabetes in Boston and what some common themes are with his best patients.  I also enjoyed talking about both type 1 and type 2 because I typically focus on just type 1 and there are many listeners that live with type 2. The area of neuropathy is pretty foreign to me because I haven't done much research at all and never experienced any of the complications associated with nerves and diabetes so far. He is a great doctor and you can tell knows A LOT about diabetes and how it impacts his patients with and without complications. “Learning about diabetic neuropathy with Dr. Ken Snow on the Blogging Diabetes Podcast” Click to Tweet This I hope you enjoy the episode!  BDP 060 | Kelly O’Connell Schmidt Interview, Diets and Offensive Diabetes Marketing | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:07

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk to Kelly Schmidt about diets, pancreas transplants, diet soda/energy drinks, vitamins and her site and services she provides.  There are so many different diets out there that are considered fad diets and it can be quite confusing.  Kelly breaks down what "eating Paleo" is all about and how it can benefit someone with type 1 or 2 diabetes. Also mixed into this show is a bit of a rant by me about Liberty Medical and their marketing tactics.  I will say that I was probably the most fired up I've been in a long time related to diabetes on this subject.  Some companies really understand how to interact and provide valuable services to their customers and some really have no clue.  Check out the show and let me know what you think and if you have any similar experiences. “Learning about the Paleo Diet on the Blogging Diabetes Podcast" Click to Tweet This FREE GIVEAWAY - Leave a comment below or send me a message to enter the give away for the Paleo Infused Nutrition Pledge.  BDP 059 | Emergency Insulin, Guest Podcasts and SNL Diabetes Humor | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:54

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk about something that happened to me for the first time and how I "macgyver'd" my insulin pump reservoir to emergency correct a high blood sugar.  There's a first time for everything, right? My wife and I both have iPhones and the SNL skit on Saturday night made me literally LOL. I was sure the reference to diabetes would cause some ruckus in the DOC. I've gotten into The China Study a bit more and fill you in on some more shocking statistics.  Also, for the first time I've brought in some other podcasts to share relevant information about health and diabetes from Jillian Michaels and Robb Wolf. “Food should be your medicine" (Jillian Michaels) Click to Tweet This There was a listener question: Are there any blogs or resources for being newly diagnosed early in college or early 20's?  BDP 058 | Basal Backup, Tattoos, Pre Existing Condition and Diabetes News | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 46:43

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I catch up on some topics that I wanted to circle back on like: farm raised vs. wild caught fish and ketones.  Also in this episode I talk a little bit about how nice it may be to have a pump vacation like Kerri did recently though I know it would be short lived like my brief stints without a CGM. “Be like a Boy Scout and be prepared" [Regarding #diabetes supplies] Click to Tweet This There were a few questions that came in and some feedback about last weeks interview with Gary Scheiner and his comment about those two type 2 diabetes being difficult. Most may know that I have a few tattoos and cover a listener question about the dangers of getting a tattoo with diabetes (type 1 or type 2).  There was also some exciting news that I caught up on from the last few weeks and especially the Dexcom G4 Platinum sensor that was just announced and shipping soon. I hope you enjoy the episode! Let me know what you thought about it.  BDP 057 | Gary Scheiner Interview, Gary’s New Book and Needleless CGM | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:43

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I chat with Gary Scheiner about becoming a CDE (Certified Diabetes Educator), differences between CDE and Endocrinologist, supplemental insulins, Type 1 University, new book due out in Feb 2013 and what the future may hold for those with diabetes. “Loved Gary Scheiner's Interview on Blogging Diabetes!” Click to Tweet This Also tucked into this episode are a few quick updates from me and one discussion about the needleless CGM that is expected to be approved in 2013.  This device looks very promising and I have included a link HERE to view the video that explains how it works.  There was so much packed into one episode and I wish I could have three more calls with Gary.  Come to think of it I may just have to look into getting a CDE to help with my diabetes management.  Anyone know where I can find a good one? :)I hope you enjoy the episode!  BDP 056 | Scott Benner on Arden’s Day, CWD, New Book and Being an Awesome Dad | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:36

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I chat with Scott Benner about his experiences as a parent and having a child with diabetes. His daughter Arden was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2. Scott and I first met at the Lilly Diabetes event last May where he pitched me the idea for his book that was in the works.  His experiences as a stay-at-home dad, dealing with diabetes and living life are pretty remarkable. “Every day I try my best to take care of my kids like I know my wife would” Click to Tweet This Scott also touches on his efforts to start a charity to help under privileged kids get access to pumps and CGMs. What I love about Scott and our talk is that it just felt like a natural discussion with a good friend. I'm looking forward to reading Scott's book that will be out in early 2013.  If you haven't read his blog, you are probably missing out.  Check it out at www.ardensday.com.  BDP 055 | CGM Problems, A1c Test Kits and Diabetes News | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:15

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk about some recent issues that came up over the last week.  One of the big issues I've run into is with my CGM (Dexcom) the last three straight sensor changes.  I'm not sure if I'm alone and would love to hear from others to see if you experience the same things.  It's also been frustrating because of the variance from the Dex numbers to my Meter. Also mixed in here are a few updates about exercise, kettle bells and my diet.  I really need to get things on track and in an aggressive way. In the past I've always done best when I jump into something 100% and that may be just what I need. “Our hobby was each other...via (@our3dlife)” Click to Tweet This   I would also love to get some feedback if anyone has ever used an indoor cycling trainer type thing that your bike connects to. As we approach winter I still want to get in my cycling time and don't know if an exercise bike or bike trainer is the way to go. After recording this episode I wrote down three more things for next week or the next podcast to talk about. This stuff just comes to me at random times and I need to write it down or I'll just move on to something else and totally forget what I wanted to talk about.  There are some SUPER guests lined up for the coming weeks. In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I chat with Ginger Vieira about diabetes, blood sugar management, exercising with diabetes, her books and diabetes & health coaching. I've learned so much from Ginger since getting a copy of her first book and just took it to another level with this interview. “Clients finally get to be able to exercise without roller coaster blood sugars” Click to Tweet This Also in this episode are a few updates that hit the news related to diabetes. I get into another incident that almost landed me in the hospital again for the second time in a week related to diabetes.  BDP 053 | Dexcom Free Days and First ER Visit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 37:27

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I dive into some of the incidents that happened over the last two weeks while traveling for work and taking a family vacation. One of the questions I get quite often is about my CGM and what I like and don't like about it.  In this episode I talk a little bit about why I enjoyed a few days without my Dexcom attached, but it came at a price. I can no longer say that I've lived 14+ years with diabetes and never had a trip to the hospital because of it.  This past Sunday night was my first trip to the ER since I was 5 years old and broke my leg.  Have a listen and find out what put me in the hospital. “I really have to do this (go to ER) for them (my family) and not eff around” Click to Tweet This Did I overreact?  BDP 052 | Interview with Lesley Berchtold, Artificial Pancreas In/Out Patient Trial and Health Supplements | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:02:21

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk to Lesley Berchtold about her history with diabetes and more recently, her in and out patient trial at UVA for the Artificial Pancreas. It was an eye opening interview that I certainly learned a lot from and appreciate Lesley talking about her experiences. “I am who I am BECAUSE of diabetes - it's made me a stronger person” ~Lesley Berchtold~ Click to Tweet This Doing some research and listening to Lesley has changed my perspective on the artificial pancreas.  I would say it's not a perfect solution by far, but it's better than what I have today and would be reflected in my blood sugars. Someone with really strict control and diet can probably accomplish the same results using a pump and CGM.  Heck, folks are getting A1c's in the 5s using multiple daily injections. Also wrapped up in this episode is a little bit about my latest bike ride and how I pushed my limits and maybe a bit beyond.  There are a few other goodies in here that you'll just have to listen to get the full story.  BDP 051 | Custom Workouts and Diet, Cycling Apps Compared and Diabetes News | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:39

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk about my latest bike ride and how the two cycling apps compare to each other.  I'm so glad to be back in the saddle on a regular basis again and plan to hit the road again on Saturday. I've got an amazing wife who fully supports my exercise and makes things so that she watches the children so I can get out. Also in this episode is a lot of information about my new custom workouts and diet plan that I actually paid to get.  I've already started the workouts and the diet starts today, so I'm excited to start into it.  There were a few items over the past few weeks that I cover in the news section.  Up next week is one of the best interviews that I think I've ever done on the podcast - Stay tuned! “25lb Kettlebell for $50, Dvd $30 = $80 for an absolutely kick ass workout” Click to Tweet This I hope you enjoy the episode! In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I spend a lot of time talking with my friend Leighann Calentine about her daughter's diabetes, diagnosis, D-Camp, FFL12 and new book that is coming out. I met Leighann in person back in May at the Lilly Diabetes summit and have been talking with her online for a few years now. Just when I was feeling a bit less stressed, things get kicked up a notch with work, more visitors and planning a vacation. Vacation is supposed to be relaxing, right? I was able to get back on the bike this past weekend that I talk about briefly in this episode. “We always want our A1c to go down, but it can't always be lower” Click to Tweet This A large part of this podcast is the interview with Leighann. In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I briefly talk about what's been going on the past two weeks while I've been off of the podcast. It's been a crazy few weeks, but I feel refreshed, got some projects completed, had family (both sides) visit and made a trip to San Francisco for the first time ever.  Honestly, I feel a bit relieved to have all of this behind me because of the added stress it was causing.  In turn, I've been a little bit better blood sugar numbers, which is a nice result. “Give me anyone that admits they did something wrong and fixes it - they gain much respect” Click to Tweet This A large part of this podcast is an interview with Kim Vlasnik where we talk about, the You Can Do This Project, Friends for Life 2012 and her story about growing up with diabetes.  I hope you enjoy the episode and being patient the last few weeks for a new show.  BDP 048 | Logging Blood Sugars, Lighting the Olympic Flame and Investing in Knowledge | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:08

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I talk about some news that hit about the T:Slim insulin pump and how there was quite a bit of a negative response from the diabetes community. Also in this episode I discuss some of the metrics that came out of the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions around those with diabetes logging blood sugars.  The percentage of people not logging at all was quite shocking. "What's frustrating is that it was avoidable (regarding Tandem)" Click to Tweet This I talk about logging and analyzing blood sugars in some detail in my tips I've learned from guests (submit a review in iTunes and message me to get a copy). In this episode, I challenge you to start looking at your numbers by simply beginning with breakfast.  My challenge is to check your basal rate and then insulin to carb ratio for just the first meal of the day for most people.  Learn more in the episode!  BDP 047 | Summertime with Diabetes, New Baby, Apps and How I’m Saving $1000 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:15

In this episode of the Blogging Diabetes Podcast I share thoughts about the birth of our daughter on 6/14 and how emotional it was for me and my wife. She is so amazing and even before her being a week old she has stolen my heart. Earlier in the week I got a great tip from Stacey that led me to making a change that is going to save me around $1,000 per year.  All I needed to do was make one phone call. With the start of Summer and three little ones that means some quality pool time.  I discuss some new problems from wearing my Dexcom and visiting the pool last weekend.  Also, I want to thank Matt Deets for a tip on some Apps and one that I particularly like for mobile printing. Finally, I am offering a THANK YOU gift to those that leave a review of the podcast in iTunes.   I get asked this question a lot and even ask it to myself - what are the common things that people do with diabetes who have a low A1c or great blood sugars? I've taken a shot at answering this question with my top 10 things that is available to anyone who leaves a review (honest) in iTunes.  Just sent me an email, tweet, FB message and I'll send the list to you.  I hope you enjoy the show!
