Tons of prizes to be given away Read more about it on the OCNA Blog at http://blog.opencaching.us/%3Fp%3D2111. GCPC EPISODE 411 - Creative Geocache Suggestions HHH: Create wonder - The art of a geocache creator is to create wonder Proper geocache placement - hidden or in plain sight Bring a smile to someone's face Misdirection can be a good thing - don’t just always show the answer. Getting the log out can be as much fun as finding the geocache itself Pinterest for ideas - hornets nest geocache, log cache, etc. SB: Puzzle caches. Creative puzzle caches. The container can be simple, but exactly HOW you get to it can be completely creative. (ex: http://coord.info/GC30A2Q) CS: Gadget caches!! Make it a challenge to open. Nostalgic cache containers. Check out yard sales for ideas. Historic enrichment. If the area has a history, bring it out in the cache and on the page. Go big or go home! If you have the room, why place a nano when you can place a fridge!? Make it yours! Everyone has their own individuality. Let yours shine through your hides. Locals will get a feel for your style, camo, humor, and creativity. TAZ: Hidden in a mass of objects - One lock on a fence w/ hundreds has the hidden cache (use something that identifies it when they look at the bottom) I’ll second hidden in plain sight - A flat magnetic sheet w/ Numbers on it and write in the rain log sheet on the side that you put on that utility box. A fake fence sign can be fun. Tube caches - the trick is figuring out how to make them work - Magnetic, Water, String, Pulley, Kinetic Energy, Motorized, … Climbing caches are fun - Trees, Hills, Bridge Girders (not on freeways please) LPC Twists - If you’re going to do an LPC do it in style - Magnetic 10’ up the Lamp Post is a fan favorite, so is velcroed up inside the skirt. ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

GCPC EPISODE 407 – Have Your Geocaching Priorities Changed? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:47

Sponsored by: Cache-Advance.com Streamed live on Jun 24, 2015 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: We discuss how geocaching started and eventually adapted over time. Not only how we geocache but what we look for and why. Be sure to check it out! We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/gpkdtpHlNSo Show Notes Episode 407 HHH: Started in February of 2008. Began with a paper logbook, nuvi 200 car gps, printing out cache sheets Using GSAK macros for planning my geocaching day Priorities then was about the numbers, finding travel bugs, trading swag and beating daily goals. Creating Tutorials on Youtube Changes in priorities of time: Wanted more paperless - used a PDA with CacheSense app was cool to have all the cache pages in your hand. Still wanted the numbers but swag started to wain. Except when it came to putting out geocaches. Travel bugs that I found (especially geocoins) but discovering was not fun anymore. Now Not the numbers even with Wife Amy Cool swag is still appreciated Cool Trackables will catch my eye I am much more into quality over quantity including events. CS: Started January of 2011 Used Trimble Outdoors app on my BlackBerry Bold. Printed out "hotspot" maps off of geocaching.com until I found GSAK. My goals were at least one a day or 500 for the first year. The year after I wanted to beat my previous year. Changes in priorities : TAZ: Started Oct 2010 (and immediately had 133 day dry streak after 7 caches) Used Garmin Nuvi 265W for first 3 - No paper, so that was fun. Bought a Garmin Oregon 450t to make it a bit easier. Found a few caches in the neighborhood and then we had the cubscouts finding caches on a campout. After 133 dry streak I was in China w/o my GPSr so decide to try a Smart Phone (Offline) and grabbed 3 caches in China to break my dry streak. It was a bit difficult as the apps where much more limited and I had to use coords and an offline map tool (I discovered the early version of cgeo about two weeks later.) Original goals were about the numbers, a mini-streak, working on my 365, finding Geocoins and Trackables, etc. A bit of FTF oriented as well. Current goals are more about finding interesting caches, solving puzzles, going to events, doing earthcaches, going to interesting places, exploring area’s I hadn’t explored before.. As well as closing out my D/T and Jasmer’s. I’ve tried to be relatively paper free, with the exceptions of logsheets and using scrap paper when solving puzzles. Maybe add about 40 pages of printouts for earthcaches and virtuals. ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

GCPC EPISODE 406 – Tips For Responsible Geocaching | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:05

Sponsored by: Cache-Advance.com Streamed live on Jun 17, 2015 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: The hosts discuss the dos and don'ts of Responsible Geocaching. Like do be safe finding a geocache. Do Not stick your hand in that deep dark pit before poking it with a stick.... Be sure to check it out! We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/GncAB0l-VKI Show Notes Episode 406 From Treadlightly.org http://treadlightly.org/tread-lightlys-tips-for-responsible-geocaching/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwkv-rBRDwoMLav-2l9KIBEiQAUTkDU9t7urRmyeMKKSGrZU2Fe55juoynsGfm15DAJSquCX4aAhHA8P8HAQ Categories: Travel Responsibly HHH: Do Use the “trackback” feature on your Global Positioning System (GPS) unit rather than flagging and marking trails. Do not wander in endless circles until the park ranger or another geocacher saves you. TAZ: Do make sure you follow the rules of the road. Do not read the cache description/hint while driving. SCOTT: Buddy up with two or three geocachers, reducing vulnerability if you have an accident or breakdown. COREY: Tell someone where you are going before you go. * Plan your route so you can leave water caches if you plan to come back the same way (long hikes). * Respect the Rights of Others TAZ: Do not trespass - especially when posted. Do not push little kids down going for FTF’s HHH: Keep the noise and dust down - minimal impact - No Boomboxes! COREY: Put the cache back where you found it, not where you think it should be hidden. Educate Yourself HHH: Do Check the weather forecast for your destination. Plan clothing, equipment, and supplies accordingly. Do Not Expect to put all of your expensive equipment into your used sandwich baggie. TAZ: Do learn about the locations / environments you’re going into. What are the potential dangers, or local laws which may differ. TAZ: Do take the time to learn about different Geocaching tools/Apps (i.e. Learn how to use your GPSr or GPS Averaging App to get coordinates when placing a cache.) SCOTT: Make a realistic plan and stick to it. Always tell someone of your travel plans. SCOTT: Carry water and emergency supplies even on short trips. COREY: Listen to great podcasts like ours! Do Your Part TAZ: Do CITO while caching. Do make a CITO kit part of your caching kit. SCOTT: If you notice a path has started to wear in the vicinity of a cache, notify the cache owner via email. HHH: Use maps to find a route that will minimize impacts. Note waypoints during your journey to assist you on your return trip. Bushwacking to the geocache first and then using the trail should be the exception not the rule. COREY: Get involved in the community. There are many parks and wildlife organizations, including state and federal ones that would love to have volunteers come and be a part of the solution to keeping our land natural and beautiful. Minimizing Other Impacts TAZ: Do not destroy nature needlessly. Do not disturb the habitats of animals when placing caches (i.e. don’t rob that Robin’s nest to place a cache in it.) HHH: Carry a trash bag on your vehicle and pick up litter left by others. Do not assume someone else will pick it up if you don’t COREY: Use the trails that are there! Most caches are placed near trails, or close by. Seldom was a cached placed by bushwhacking and making new trails. ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

How geocaching.com puts a moratorium on challenge caches then basically makes one big summer long challenge cache with their “road trip” caches. WTF? Discuss... TAZ: When does ‘Geocaching’ on a vacation become too much of a burden on the non-geocachers in a family? What’s the right amount of give and take? GUEST HOST (DG): Not exactly geocaching, but GPS tech related… I spotted an article this morning about a woman in California who was fired after complaining about and then deleting an app (Xora) on her company provided iPhone. She was expected to keep it on 24/7 to field customer support calls, but didn’t like being tracked in her off hours. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3078229/Worker-fired-disabling-GPS-app-tracked-24-hours-day.html What do other think of this? This week, one of our local cachers - Nighthawk700 - had trouble with an FTF when it turned out the CO (with 4 finds) hadn’t placed the cache yet and hadn’t used either a GPS or smartphone to get the coords. How do you deal with this sort of thing and how do you interact with new owners? From Chatroom - Excagirl: Question for the room...I have never gone camping but I was thinking of trying it at Geobash. But I have 2 dogs and I don't know how they would behave at the campsite. How do I practice with the dogs to see what they would do? ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed
