 GCPC EPISODE 482 – Things I Wish I’d Known When I Starting Out Geocaching | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:07

NEWS: --------- HHH: Point of Reference The actual hide itself and how they can be hidden Different container types Understanding the difficulty of a hide SB: LPC’s are not the coolest thing you’ll ever see Wearing shorts/flip flops into the woods to cache is NOT a good idea What poison ivy looks like When hiking all day in the summer, 2 12oz water bottles are NOT enough TAZ: INFO: Mine are more things to think about, rather than ‘power searching tips’... Re-read the cache page, hints and the logs to see if there’s something there that can help you when you’re at the location. A DNF is not an admission of failure, but to maximise your chances, look for geocaches that have been found recently, and by people with just a few finds. Different people play this game / sport / obsession in different ways, and that’s perfectly fine. Here are a few suggestions from other NZ cachers I asked for ideas: Don't rely too much on the technology - stand back, take a breath, trust your instincts, what looks out of place, where would I hide it....... be aware that coordinates may well be inaccurate, especially under trees. The quickest route to a cache isn't necessarily in a straight line - don’t forget to look at the map! Go to events and meet other cachers to get a better understanding of the Geo world, great for teamwork and solving those pesky caches that elude you. If something looks out of place, it probably is. Geocaches are often right in front of you. A fake looking dog poo (or chewing gum) may not actually be fake - Act with extreme caution...sticks are your friend! A good cache deserves an appreciative log. Tells the person who placed it, took lots of way point readings and time writing it up that you enjoyed it. TFTC or easy find is like saying "Meh" (OK, I was guilty of that at the start)... ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

Greetings Geocaching Podcasters, Some of you have electronically added name tags that include either a picture or an avatar. However I can not make out the details, and I am a bit curious about your choices. Taz, is that a ninja or a swordsman with either the sun or the moon in your avatar? Is there a story behind your choice? Scott, your image shows you wearing a red hat, is the hat significant? Thank you for your answers, the shows, and have a great holiday season. Steven geocaching name: stevenw54 NEWS: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/88130040/huge-sendoff-for-andrew-reinders-victim-of-hawera-truck-crash I (and others in the NZ Geocaching community) knew him as waiiti20. I didn’t know him well, but he was a regular at many Wellington events. I realised I’d ‘made it as a geocacher’ when he contacted me for a hint on a cache I’d found and he was having problems with! N.b. the print version of this was the front page of today’s Dominion Post and included the coordinates for his final resting place! --------- Guest Host:Guest Hosts: Adam Schoenwald Alias: Cloak.n.dagger Jesse Lunsford Alias: Memfis Mafia HHH: RANTS: Lack of progress with Geocaching.com in general. Can’t get the existing app up to date let alone new features No progress with the game itself. Same ole Same ole Rejuvenate our game, sport and obsession - geocaching is dated. Create a Clean-up of Archived and Should Be Archived program Clean up the geo-trash to make way for new geocaches to be placed. Cito our own game even with the result of having less active geocaches. RESOLUTIONS: Be more active both actively and promoting geocaching in a more positive light There is a balance where you can promote and voice opinions. Putting out some quality caches worth favorite points to help generate interest in our area. SB: RANTS: So many abandoned caches out there from the surge in 2010+ GC still not having great search tools, maps, etc. RESOLUTIONS: More forest time this year More than 1300 cache finds (2016 count), my worst year since 2010 5 months away (May) from 100 months in a row with an FTF TAZ: RANTS: A lot of great rants already taken here - Poor quality caches put out by newbies is always a good complaint. Reviewers - Is it required to have a stick firmly implanted in ones arse to become a reviewer or what? Putting out a puzzle cache that is as near self explanatory as it can be and then being asked to explain how to solve it per the guidelines (which yes it’s now in the guidelines), and then having to solve what the Anagram because they think it might be a bad word - WTF? It was ‘Insures - Bras Stuck’ and the coordinates are over a Starbucks on Sunrise. Ended up publishing it a day late because of that. I’d hate to see what some of the ones that take a Rocket Scientist to solve have to go through now.

If you’ve found any geocaches in these countries in the past, these souvenirs have been awarded to your profile. Happy holidays and safe travels! --------- Guest Host:Guest Hosts: Adam Schoenwald Alias: Cloak.n.dagger Jesse Lunsford Alias: Memfis Mafia HHH: Tips about keeping the family engaged in geocaching Rules of the Woods, City, etc. - Keeping your family safe Being prepared - First Aid, Food, Water, Extra Swag, letting go trackables, etc. TAZ: Given that my family doesn’t like to geocache, at least not very much. I find taking them to interesting Virtuals and Earthcaches are the best bet. As long as it doesn’t involve spending time actually looking for a container they are up for it. INFO: Try to find cache types to suit the company I am keeping that day! The lads are far more outdoorsy than I will ever be, so if I’m with them it’s go for the distance and ‘interesting’ terrain (Tip: if you can get them interested in walking, you can train them up to act as sherpas for you on longer trips, and sub contract them to do things like climb trees on your behalf if you bribe them with ice creams afterwards!) If I’m with my parents, it needs to be an interesting location (views or historic), or a more gentle walk. Numbers runs and Park & Grabs are best avoided. Both groups find the journey much more interesting than the prospect of hunting for lots of boxes, which spoils the journey for them. Or if we’re heading out to do something like an orienteering event, I drop them where they need to be, and return at an agreed time, having collected some of the caches around the area. Cache trips disguised as ‘driving practice’ for my eldest worked for a while, but he has his licence now. With younger kids, (especially those who aren’t regular cachers) I’d look at finding caches in nice areas with loads of Favourite points, and (more importantly) have been found recently. The last thing you want is to have a string of DNF’s! Caches based around museum exhibits are also good for kids on a rainy day - they can help you spot the information, and you can come back to the final later. C&D: Geocaching is an anytime anywhere sport, rather we have time for just a quick PnG or a weekend adventure it really just depends on the moods and our current state of readiness?? What I mean by that is I evaluate if Burgundy and Kayla Dressed for a walk in the woods,

GCPC EPISODE 478 – Causes and Cures For Geocaching Burnout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 55:10

December 7th, 2016 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: Tonight's topic deals with and hopefully brings helpful suggestions for Geocaching Burnout. As the largest country in the world, Russia spans eleven time zones and covers more than one eighth of Earth’s inhabited land area. Find an urban cache in St. Petersburg or venture to a volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Puerto Rico is home to over 1000 active caches and a geocaching community known for its warm hospitality and friendliness to strangers. Enjoy stunning beaches or discover one of Puerto Rico’s best-kept secrets: its extensive cave system. Learn more about geocaching in Russia and Puerto Rico on the Geocaching Blog. Geocaching Burnout - What is it? When Geocaching is no longer fun? When you are getting bored or frustrated by the game? When you stop doing it? Are there different reasons for burnout around the 50 finds mark (I tried the hobby, it wasn’t for me), and the 1000+ cache people (something’s changed, and it’s not fun anymore)? What is causing them to burn out and or quit? IF: Time / Family pressures? Lack of variety in the local area? Just other interests? Bad weather / winter? SB: crappy hides, bad community TAZ: Hide quality/availability of good hides. Feeling uncomfortable when searching for hides. Poor maintenance by local hiders, Too many DNFs. IF: some comments from others in the NZ caching community (edited): When: You have fewer than 100 geocaches within an hour from home. Especially if you are trying to spread your finds (e.g. dot days) or get 1000 finds a year. The only puzzles left have only been solved by a few people. All the caches are urban micros, even those placed in non-urban locations. Making yourself get out and find caches whether or not you want to, can make it a chore rather than a fun hobby. (e.g. 'burnout' after trying to complete a geostreak). Local cachers form a clique that you are not in. Your caching buddies get a boyfriend or something else more important than geocaching. Your family make it unbearable to stop for a geocache when you want to. Electronics making it too easy to play? IF: Hell no! Smartphones are what got me into the game! Also smartphones give scope for all sorts of puzzles (e.g. Wherigos). TAZ: Nope, while electronics have improved, they’ve only made it easier to get to the hide (planning, navigating, logging, etc.), not to find the hide itself. Is there too much emphasis on the numbers? IF: For some people perhaps? Numbers don’t generally bother me, unless someone is bragging about them. SB: As someone with 14.5k finds, I’d say numbers definitely add to the burnout. TAZ: I don’t see these as community imposed emphasis, but more personal desires to achieve something specific. Though, I know I had burnout when I was trying to close out my 365/366 Challenge. Things to help prevent burn out: TAZ: Step back,

GCPC EPISODE 477 – Geocaching Deadly Sins – Bad Geocache Designs and Hides | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:46

November 30th, 2016 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: Headhardhat and Sarah T-S are "on assignment" so CloakNDagger will be in as guest host. Tonight's topic is a bit of a rant show when it comes to bad geocache designs and hides. Everything from poorly made, poorly disquieted and more. This all can lead to unhappy geocachers, muggles and let's say uniformed parties. Suitable suggestions to help will be provided by the hosts. Be sure to check it out! Please share with other geocachers. We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! #geocaching #geocachingpodcast #headhardhat #podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/HL0kI20K0HU GCPC EPISODE 477 Show Notes GCPC MAILBAG at GCPCMAILBAG@Gmail.com NEWS: Have you planned your 2017 travel? One of the coolest things about geocaching is that it's played by people around the world in so many different ways. To celebrate this, we're releasing five new country souvenirs over the next few weeks! If you’ve already found a geocache in any of these countries, you’ll automatically receive the souvenir on your profile. Souvenirs that are currently available can be found here. You can view which ones you’ve already earned by checking out your Souvenirs on Geocaching.com. Stay tuned for the first new country souvenirs announcement in next week’s Geocaching newsletter. Looks like they’ll be announcing one a week for the next five weeks. The first one is Slovenia https://www.geocaching.com/blog/category/geocaching-com-souvenirs/ SB: just bags, plastic toys TAZ: Cheap plastic ‘Gladware’ type containers that disintegrate within weeks when exposed to the environment. Anything not airtight in humid environments (not as much of a problem out here in Cali.) Used Mini Mouthwash container w/o the cap (Yes, a ¼ inch hole in top, with paper jammed inside and no cap. I was FTF on one of these.) C&D: In order of highest irritation to lowest. Reviewers not being on the same page (they have a huge grey area of what is acceptable and what isn’t) and every reviewer is different in interpretations of cache is allowable and what isn’t. No logging requirements, though geocaching encourages people to write a log containing at least two sentences, they allow emojis and “one word Acronyms. Limited geocaching adoptions, there are circumstance where a great geocache has been placed and the CO has quit playing or has died, there is no option to adopt these caches to either preserve the memory or the age of the geocache. Complaints about geocaches being PMO. Poor swag hides/illegal hides Abandoned geocaches Not enough resources to help establish Large events. Groundspeak store does not engrave your geocoins like Coins and Pins does. Infoferret’s list of Rants! (not necessarily in order of importance). These are probably mostly placed by newcomers to the game: Inaccurate coordinates (10m + out). Meaningless cache hints. Unrealistic D/T Ratings (appreciate that this can be entirely subjective!) Flimsy / unsuitable containers (e.g. takeaway boxes). Eclipse mint tins which have not been camouflaged (shiny metal tins, which can look like litter). Ditto caches with glass containers (I’ve CITO’d enough glass that the idea of deliberately putting more out there seems crazy). Caches that look like something dangerous. (e.g. bombs, pest traps etc.) I’m all for creativity, but there are limits! Caches placed at the exact same spot where one (or more) have been archived in a short space of time previously. (Could reviewers make suggestions here?)
