I swear I remember when Darryl joined, but that might have been my listening to the back catalog when catching up. Congrats on 500! Happy Trails! Dave / DudleyGrunt Hey guys (and gals), This is GeekBoy.from.Illinois. I've been geocaching since July 3rd, 2006. While listening to your show #500, I heard you ask how long we had been listening. I started listening to Xpunkx back around show #5-10. I would call into Talkshoe almost every week to participate, and when I was near a computer, I would be in the chatroom. Way back at some point in the past, before Montu Rider joined the team, I was a silent member of the crew. I would monitor the chats and add questions & comments to the show notes so that Andy & Darryl didn't have to watch both all the time. I kept up doing that all the way up until they moved away from Talkshoe. At several points it was debated if I should become an active host, but initially, Andy & Darryl were both in EST and I was in CST, it wasn't a great fit. Then after Scott Berks came along, he is just a stone's throw away from me, so I left the opportunities to geocachers from different areas to get a better distribution. I will have to dig through my old iTunes library to see how far back I still have episodes saved, as for a long time, I wasn't ever deleting them. ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

As a new feature to the Geocaching® app, we’re excited to see the caches we missed, so we can get back out there turn those frowns upside down. Once you find a cache you previously DNF’d, the yellow smiley will replace the DNF icon. DNF’s (Did Not Finds) will now have a separate icon making them easy to see on both the map and in Lists. DNF’s are not always fun to log, but we like to use them as motivation to try again! Plus, they’re helpful to both the community and cache owner. Oftentimes it’s the journey to ground zero that’s the adventure, so log your DNF’s with pride. Add a comment below and share your best DNF story with other geocachers! Next, we want you to know that we’ve been listening. After all, geocaching exists because of you, our community! That’s why we’re pleased to announce that you can now view Attributes in the app. A feature that many of you have been requesting! The cache details page will display up to 5 Attributes with the ability to view more on a separate screen. Additionally, when saving cache info for offline use, Attributes will be included. If you’re just joining the geocaching adventure, Attributes communicate what to expect at a cache location. For example, if a geocache requires tree climbing, you’ll see the tree icon. Attributes denote permissions, equipment required, hazards, terrain conditions, and more. Attributes are great for planning cache outings so that you can be prepared to earn that smiley! As with all of our releases, we also make other small improvements and fix bugs. The 5.4 update includes an improved process for saving offline lists, easy access to the Help Center from the app, and more. Head to the Geocaching Forums to read about these updates.

From Al Van Dyke (unclecacher) Just thought I'd share with you my favorite muggle story. Two of us were caching a series along a levy on the Ohio river that had a hike bike trail along the top. As we were hunting one of the containers, a man and woman (husband and wife?) came walking by. The person I was caching with was brand new to caching, so he just continued searching as if they were not there (muggle unaware). As they approached the lady asked me what we were doing. Probably because I had stopped hunting when I noticed them approaching waiting for them to pass before continuing my search. Before I could reply, the man said to her "Oh, they're geocaching". I would have liked to ask him if he was a cacher or, if not, how he knew about it. But they just kept walking right past me making it obvious they had no desire to stop and chat. That day I learned sometimes the best way to deal with muggles is to just ignore them and plunge ahead. A muggle in geocaching terms is a person who does not know what geocaching is. In their eyes we can look odd, crazy, or even suspicious. A general thinking about muggles: From the Forums: “I'm pretty new to Geocaching, so I'm hoping the community can help explain something to me - why the general feeling that Geocaching must be hidden from Muggles? Is it just because of how often non-players may steal/damage/move a cache? Or is it an exclusivity thing? Thanks!” Theft or vandalization of geocaches. How has muggles changed over the years. Discussion: Geocaching when it was a more secret game. Being much more covert back then Types of Muggles - a sort of classification: The Oblivious Muggle This type of muggle just goes along it’s daily life completely oblivious of geocaching as a whole. They are most likely to just stumble upon you while geocaching. Usually too wrapped up with what they are doing to even notice you. The Semi-Curious Muggle These muggles are fairly aware of their surroundings and may notice a geocacher if they are not known to them. They may catch your body language and just out of curiosity may come up to you and ask what you are doing. The Lingerer Muggle These are one of the most frustrating muggles to geocachers. Lingerers usually stand or sit right next to a geocache minding their own business. When this happens you have to just wait until they leave before approaching ground zero. “Murphy’s Law of muggles: If there is a muggle anywhere within 500ft of a geocache, they will be standing at ground zero” The Whistle Blower This is the muggle geocachers dread. It is usually the nosey neighbor that has to know every person walking up and down the street. They start to panic if an unfamiliar car of person is in their field of view and they are also the first people to call the police just because they can. Note some whistleblowers call the police just to be recognized as a good citizen and won’t think twice calling the authorities just to be in the spotlight. The Active Anti-cacher While they general have an idea of what it is, they don’t accept it as they way you describe it and associate many potential negatives towards it and do things like, actively destroy containers, promote it as organized littering, go so far as having social media campaigns against it because it destroys nature. Sarah, Happy ANZAC day to you! http://maritime-executive.com/article/anzac-day-photos-from-april-25-1915 I'm a fan of the Geocache Podcast and I recall you mentioning ANZAC day during a show and your fellow hosts having no idea what it was. I know, and do very much appreciate ANZAC and this day. I'm a former Navy Sailor and used to be stationed in the South Pacific on Guam. I've been to Australia a couple times, but not NZ and hope to take my family there someday. Years back I was seeking orders to the U.S. Comms Station in Christchurch, but that facility has since closed and I didn't make it there. When I used to work at the Pentagon in Washington DC, the long hallways and corridors are covered in history and displays, and my favorite hallway holds the tribute to ANZAC and all the various battles that USA and NZ have fought side-by-side. From: Merlin1392, aka Tim Green Guys and gals, I really like listening to the show, and especially like the foreign perspective of InfoFerret. However, could Andy please stop bashing the Geocaching App? I know Sonny hates LPC's, but when it was minus 7, snowy, windchill about minus 20. and I wanted to find a quick cache, the LPC was the perfect fit! Do I look for them frequently, no. Do I even like them, No! However, they do server their purpose. They keep streaks going, and fulfill puzzles, when the skill and thrill is in the puzzle or WhereIgo and not the cache. Likewise, I mostly cache with a GPSr, but recently have been doing more urban caching, and using my iPhone. When the new app came out, I jumped in, seeing the handwriting on the wall. As a basic tool for finding caches, it works well. I happen to like the new drafts feature, so that I can leave a simple note and compose a good log upon returning home. I mostly use the app to bring up Google Maps to route me to the area of the cache, then I switch to my GPSr. That said, I've recently come into some free itunes credits, and made the jump to Cachly. I find Cachly much more comprehensive, which is usually beyond what I need to find a cache, but it's growing on me. Today while caching I started with Cachly, but switched to the Geocaching App for the trail guides, and compass to finish off a DNF (the tree was recently removed!) I have many tools in my toolbox, including at least seven different hammers. The right tool for the right job! Your caching experience is beyond the "starter" nature of the Geocaching App. That doesn't make it a bad app, nor even an incomplete one. It serves an audience it was designed for, and as users gain experience they can move to the many other options available. Thanks for an interesting show, but please give Geocaching HQ credit for creating a starter App for beginning cachers. Maybe someday it will be more, but for the sake of beginners, I hope not. Now that Geocaching.com has announced the Ape Cache will be re-activated at the 2017 Going Ape event, you have your work cut out for you. Y'all have to start the drumbeat, lead the band and any other metaphor you can think of to boost the "will attends" for the event to Giga status. Just think, the historic reactivation of the Ape Cache along with the Western Hemisphere's first Giga Event will simply be epic! Many cachers will be able to get an two-fer on just one "iconic" trip. (See what I just did there?) So call your contacts at Geocaching.com, find out what it takes to attain Giga status, and get it started. Sign up yourselves, sign up your friends and get everybody you know and everybody they know to sign up (even if they don't think they can make it). North America needs this to happen! Keep up the good work. Data Wrangler NEWS: ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

For the folks that use a smartphone to cache, the Product Development Team is curious to learn more about how you use offline functionality. It’s a tricky thing to balance data bandwidth/space constraints, performance/speed, and access to the information that you need to have fun playing the game. Your feedback will help us to find that balance in our apps. Thanks! GCPC MAILBAG at GCPCMAILBAG@Gmail.com Send us your emails! GC4Z21M Keaconcrete (fiordland) -- mentioned in the show in New Zealand I attempted this one in February but turned back after "TRAIL CLOSED" signs were posted due to rock falls. I heeded the warnings. Others apparently do not. Question for your show: would you do something "illegal" to get a cache. Might need to debate "illegal", or perhaps really crazy like going beyond barriers. A couple pictures are attached for your amusement, fog moving in and the pesky Kea bird. Send to Infoferret too. Note: She dropped my name on your show a couple weeks ago about an event in Wellington she missed. Thanks for your show. Hey guys I have been a listener for a while now and also contribute to the Patreon cause I love the show. I was wondering how you guys find time to get the caching in. I started in 2008 and find myself being into it for a week then off for a quarter. One of the best things I use the game for is finding new places when I visit a new town. I first visited my brother at his new house in Ft. Lauderdale in 2010 and one of the ways I learned how to get around down there is through Geocaching. Needless to say, it helped my find cool new areas. Up until recently I have only made about 325 finds. Now that my kids are older I am making a push for 500 by year's end and 1000 by the end of 2018. Any tips that you can give me to hit my milestones? Thanks!
