Even if it is in my neighborhood. HHH - Thankful for my geocaching partner Wife Amy who many times instigates us going out geocaching. HHH - Thankful for all the technologies that have come and gone over the years HHH - Thankful of the interesting surprises i have encountered in my travels. HHH - Thankful for never really knowing what I am going to find with every geocache I try to go for. SB - for the friendships I’ve made SB - the places I’ve seen. I have been to half the US caching IF - for the CO’s (and also the Reviewers) who’ve taken the trouble to place and maintain the caches I’ve found. IF - for the people who’ve found my caches and left interesting logs for others to read. The General thankfuls: All the places I have been while geocaching All the people I have met while geocaching All the memories over the years while geocaching All the stories I have to share while geocaching For health, enough money for the petrol, and good enough weather to cache! ------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: Attention cache owners! This new Dashboard tool is for you https://www.geocaching.com/account/dashboard How big is the universe? Why are we here? What would geocaching be like without cache owners? These are questions that we do not know the answers to. What we know for sure is, that geocaching would not be here without the universe, you, and dedicated geocachers who create and hide geocaches. This is why we have added several features to the updated Geocaching.com Dashboard to make maintaining a geocache easier and owning one more delightful. ------------------------------------------------------------------- GCPC Mailbag…Send your geocaching email to: GCPCMailbag@gmail.com Welcome back!!! You've done lots of shows on trip planning, but I haven't heard one done on route planning (unless of course I missed it :-) I know where I want to go. I have all the stops (at least primary ones) identified. Now, I need to find the most efficient route possible, that gets me from a starting point to a destination point. Oh yeah, and it has to be free, because as we have all recently learned, Geocaching is Free, right? Google maps does a good job, but you're limited to 10 stops. I was currently trying to plan for an attempt at the Geotour-GT77, "Butler County Donut Trail". It has 15 stops, plus starting at my home address and ending there too, so I need 17 stops. Google searches revealed several tools for planning a route, but they all want an address! Now I have to figure out how to convert coordinates into a street address. I did find a couple that took coordinates, but they were also limited to the number of stops on the route. What's a cacher todo? Any hints, tips, applications, or other tools would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the show, and hopefully some suggestions! Keeping with the spirit of the GIFFs. We thought we would give our tips and opinions on what it takes to make a quality geocaching video. Options have changed over the years. We have the king of videos YouTube which still holds the majority of geocaching videos. Over the years we had large camcorders, smaller camcorders, Digital Cameras, Point and Shoot Cameras and of course smart phones in all shapes and sizes. - Go over what we used in the past to record videos. When I started doing GeoSnippits back in 2008 there were only a few geocaching videos on YouTube. Now when you search you will see over 355,000! ------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: Well, the 2017 GIFF was last weekend, forgot to mention it in last weeks show :-( I hope you all attended.  GCPC EPISODE 514 – Cacher Coffee November 2017 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:14

November 1st, 2017 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: The gang grabs a favorite beverage and discuss whatever they would like. Talk about a smorgasbord of geocaching good times. Be sure to check it out! Please share with other geocachers. We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! #geocaching #geocachingpodcast #headhardhat #podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/41BnarzZvsw GCPC EPISODE 514 Show Notes GCPC EPISODE 514 - Cacher Coffee November 2017 HHH: Discussion point to each host: What is the single most revolutionary (person, experience or thing) you have witnessed within your history of geocaching? SB: Geocaching Vloggers 40th birthday! What did you do with your Mary Hyde code? TAZ: Your favorite geocaching experience: An Event, A trip, A geocaching trail, A specific geocache. INFO: If you’re going on a road trip with one or more friends, how do you split the costs? Equal shares? Driver has the running costs of the car, so the passengers buy petrol / lunch / coffees etc? Something else entirely? What do you do if someone else joins the group for the day? Not sure there’s any one correct answer, but I thought it would be interesting to discuss. ------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: Message Center now accepts additional file types There are many good reasons to make use of the Message Center, because there is so much to talk about when it comes to geocaching: It’s a great way to plan geocaching outings with your friends. A good way to ask a friend for suggestions about the best geocaches in your area. You can get a hint from the cache owner for an especially tricky hide. And, because the Message Center is available in the Geocaching® app, you can submit your answers for Virtuals and EarthCaches right in the field. We know that geocaching is better when players communicate with each other so we wanted to make that easier. The challenge, after all, should be in the adventure and not in the tools you use. That’s why we took some time to update and improve the Message Center. ------------------------------------------------------------------- GCPC Mailbag…Send your geocaching email to: GCPCMailbag@gmail.com Hello Geocaching Podcasters, It is good to see that the podcast has resumed after being in hiatus. InfoFerret seems to have had quite a time traveling in Europe, and I too am surprised at the amount of vacation time she earns. Hopefully the smoke from the California wine country fires is no longer an issue for Taz, One day I walked out of a building and the smell of that smoke was instantly noticeable, even though I would have to drive for a few hours to reach the area. I hope to see you again soon, but don't let the show stress any of you out. Steven geocaching name: stevenw54 Hi there! So glad you guys are back-- I've missed you! I was listening to this week's and heard Chad talking about the new geo-checker. He had a complaint and also a point about challenge caches. His complaint was about the format of the checker and not being able to easily copy and paste into the "Personal Notes" section. He is right, and this is annoying. However, when you get a positive answer from the checker, it updates the "Corrected Coordinates' on the page (the equivalent of hitting the little pencil next to the coordinates). It's not a perfect solution, but you can easily copy these and paste them into your personal note. The other comment he made was about how it would be nice if there were some marker for challenge caches or other caches that perhaps are "mystery",

You can find the release notes here. Link: https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/346313-release-notes-website-solution-checker-october-19-2017/ The solution checker only appears on a cache page if the CO has turned it on. (The default is off.) A Mystery Cache's final coords are tied to the solution checker. So, if a finder submits the correct coordinates to the checker, it will automatically update the corrected coords on the cache page for that finder. Of course, corrected coords are also synced with the Geocaching® app. ------------------------------------------------------------------- GCPC Mailbag…Send your geocaching email to: GCPCMailbag@gmail.com Hi folks, Got a quick question about cachly. Do you know if I get a new phone and redownload the app, will it save my offline content? Thanks, Ed Eb3754 Nic Response: If you backup your old phone correctly to iTunes it should preserve the data and transfer to the new phone. Backing up to iCloud will not. If that somehow doesn’t work for them they can also transfer the database from one phone to another using iTunes File Sharing, which I could give them instructions for. ——————————————————————- LINKS Videocast Audio Podcast Google Search Geocaching Podcast Website Subscribe To The Show RSS Show Feed

 GCPC EPISODE 512 – How To Handle A Rogue Geocacher | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:18

September 27th, 2017 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: The hosts take on a question from one of our listeners asking about how to handle a rogue geocacher. In other words when geocachers go bad. This opens up an interesting set of discussion. Be sure to check it out! Please share with other geocachers. I have an idea for one of your future topics. How to best handle a "rogue" geocacher, especially when they are a premium member. I recently encountered a new geocacher with hardly any finds that is a premium member. They logged a couple of my caches with language that was very inappropriate. I realized they were new cachers and sent them a private message asking very nicely to please be careful with their language while writing the logs, as other cachers read them and sometimes children or young people may read them as well. I was then responded to with a rage of inappropriate accusations and bad language. I immediately realized where this was going and responded with, this conversation is ended. I then remove their logs on my caches. Within a couple days I was getting logs messages from other cachers stating that some of my caches had been destroyed. Although I am sure it was this "rogue" cacher, I could not prove it. This has since stopped and I have checked this person’s profile and noticed they have never logged any more finds. I assume they felt that geocaching was not for them. I'm sure this does not happen often but I am curious on how you folks think this type of thing should be handled. I only wish we had a Canadian podcast. My name is not Greg and I do not have brown hair. However I was selected to participate in a virtual Cache. I am both honored and humbled to have been selected. I have only been caching for about a year and 1/2. I'm not sure why I was chosen but my best guess is because of my gadget cache's. I have put out 15 so far as well as 30 other type cache's and pretty well anybody that visits the gadget caches gives me a favorite. I think I already have close to 500 favorite points. It takes me hours to build a gadget cache and I actually love putting out cache's rather then finding them. I have only found aprox 300. Perhaps it is because I have no hair...lol, Happy caching my friends. This has led me to widen my thoughts what other forms “cheating” there are in our favourite game. So for the purpose of discussion only I have come up with the following: Gordon comes up with a dozen excellent “Is it Cheating?” discussion points so we are going to use his email for next week’s show. We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! #geocaching #geocachingpodcast #headhardhat #podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/480gGtYdTtI GCPC EPISODE 506 Show Notes What is a Multi-cache? These geocaches involve two or more locations, with the final location being a physical container with a logbook inside. There are many variations, but typically once you’re at the first stage, you will receive a clue to the whereabouts of the second stage. The second stage will have a clue for the third, and so on. What is a Puzzle cache? Many new geocachers confuse multi caches with puzzle caches. So here is the difference. The "catch-all" of geocache types, this type may involve complicated puzzles that you will first need to solve to determine the correct coordinates. Mystery/Puzzle Caches often become the staging ground for new and unique geocaches that do not fit in another category. Icon most commonly used for ‘geo art’. (A series of puzzles which when viewed on the map, show a recognised image). This is also the icon used for challenge caches - where the container is at the location specified, but you are supposed to have ‘met’ the challenge before logging it. Differences between Multies and Puzzles? Pros and Cons? Pros Pro - Multi - Takes you on an adventure Cons Con - Multi - Multiple stages and a single smiley.  GCPC EPISODE 505 – Geocaching Muggles: Past and Present | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:03:49

July 26th, 2017 In tonight's episode of the Geocaching Podcast: InfoFerret is taking a well deserved night off but fear not Mr. Scott Berks is back from his summer hiatus! See you there! #geocaching #geocachingpodcast #headhardhat #podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/gzBCn-1Jwxo GCPC EPISODE 505 Show Notes When out geocaching it is bound to happen. An encounter is inevitable and how you conduct yourself will in many cases dictate how the encounter will end. No we are not talking about wildlife this time but muggles. Just being prepared will help. In years past: Geocaching was a much more secretive activity which dictated more seclusive techniques to keep away from muggles. The main tool of the time was an actual GPS unit. Was a time of higher overall paranoia and suspicion of everyone. Geocachers worked on stealth when it came to finding a geocache in a muggle prone environment. It was not uncommon to have clothing items and props to help blend into the area when geocaching. Example: construction vests, hardhat and tags, clipboard, etc. Muggles of the present: A bit less paranoid of people in general. Are getting more familiar with people playing augmented reality games on their smartphones: Ex. Ingress or Pokemon Go, etc. Still suspicious of geocache containers We encourage geocaching with confidence instead of stealth and looking to see if someone is looking at you. ------------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS: Second “Message in a Bottle” was sent out on Monday July 24th. And by that I mean that Andy has gone above and beyond to demonstrate marked appreciation for the current efforts of geocaching.com. I agree that journalism should present the good and the bad, and it is one of your responsibilities to point out deficiencies, or better, suggest continued improvements. I also agree that the geocaching app is not Cachly, GSAK, or one of the more favored geocaching apps, but it does hit the mark for basic caching and has made significant improvements in the recent past. Kudos to them for their continued efforts, and kudos to Andy for acknowledging the good and the bad. Thanks for all you do for geocaching! Be sure to check it out! Please share with other geocachers. We meet on Wednesday nights at 9:30PM ET at http://www.geocachingpodcast.com/live so you can see us record the show live and join in the chat room. See you there! #geocaching #geocachingpodcast #headhardhat #podcast ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Video Version of our Podcast https://youtu.be/BZr6na8vY6g GCPC EPISODE 503 Show Notes Hello everyone, I want to give you a quick heads up about today's Geocaching.com update. The release includes the website's newest feature: Friend League. The Friend League is a leaderboard that shows geocaching activity of you and your geocaching friends. If you log a cache or attend an event, you collect points in the form of gold coins. This feature goes hand in hand with The Lost Treasure of Mary Hyde. To earn the souvenir with the first map piece, you and your crew have to collect 30 gold coins during July 17-23. (Read more about the Mary Hyde souvenirs on the Geocaching Blog.) The rules for earning gold coins change every Monday at 5 am PDT (Pacific Daylight Time), Noon UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). At that time, the Friend League will refresh and the gold coin count goes back to zero. Friend League is a test feature. We’ll evaluate usage and feedback during The Lost Treasure of Mary Hyde before deciding how this functionality might be used in the future.
