Episode-114- TSP Rewind – Common Sense vs. Consumerism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:26

Today is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally Episode-751- Common Sense vs. Consumerism and was first published on September 28th, 2011. The following are the original show notes from that episode… Today I wanted to take a moment to take a look at the concept of consumerism and how it directly conflicts with the preparedness lifestyle. Now don’t get me wrong I am a capitalist libertarian, I believe in the free market but I also believe in making informed consumer decisions. Consumerism is the opposite of that, consumerism is a heard mentality where providers and producers spend time competing for existing market share and replacing products that are still functional. An informed consumer market requires producers and providers to innovate and create better longer lasting products and services. Join me today as I discuss… Early Retirement Extreme – a book that got me thinking this way Are we in a “climax stage” as in Permaculture Are companies innovating or competing in existing markets Working Man v. Salary Man v. Business Man v. Renaissance Man How our grandparents evaluated a purchase of a product Do I need it Does anything I have fill the role now How long will it last What will it do for me and my family How long must I work to pay for it If I don’t buy it what difference will it really make How companies market products today Can we create a fad/cult following around it What existing market share can we capture with it Can we build a market to sell subsequent products to Is it a consumable or designed to fail How cheaply can we manufacture it Can we outsource most of the work Will it last long enough to avoid returns Can we sell it for less than the competition Or can we justify a premium at little to no internal cost How do we avoid the consumerist trap and still have fun and cool stuff Avoiding debt solves most of the problems Have a 48 hour waiting period on major purchases Ask the questions our grandparents did   Additional Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Silver and Gold Shop – (sponsor of the day) HarvestEating.com – (sponsor of the day) Early Retirement Extreme – Book I mentioned today EarlyRetirementExtreme.com Episode 752 – Courtney Clay on UnSchooling – Episode I mention at the end of this old episode.   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2494- 10 Low Carb Meals and How to Make Them | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:35

Today I want to talk to you about low carb living and low carb dieting, and how the two are different things.  The recipes today are really mostly for a low carb diet.  I personally define diet here in the sense of a transitive verb, ie, what you do when you want to lose weight or improve your health.  When we move to low carb living, we then use diet as a noun, meaning simply the food you eat every day. The problem we have in America is diet is generally only used to describe what we do to lose weight.  During this time we restrict what we eat.  This is done many ways but chiefly among the mainstream it is the restriction of calories.  Other diets restrict say certain macro nutrients, such as carbohydrates or fat.  Some entire classifications of foods, such as a vegan diet, vegetarian diet or say a paleo diet.  Note Paleo ends up being low carb most of the time, but low carb isn’t the specific goal. Regardless of what the TV tells you when it comes to weight loss, the results are in and nothing works like any diet that significantly restricts carbohydrates.  The argument always comes down to this against such diets.  “Sure you lose weight on them but when you stop doing them you gain the weight back”.  Really well, what effing diet is there that doesn’t work the same way? This is where it falls apart, once people lose weight and or improve their health they go back to diet as a noun, “the food you eat every day” and do so with no real restriction.  Again this is where it all falls apart as even if you begin by just loosening up a bit of restriction, then you stop tracking things, then you are eating the very food that caused your issues in the first place.  This often happens to people who are sure they are not “breaking the rules” yet they are doing so in spades.  Today along with “Phase One” level intervention meals, I will talk about Phase Two meals that continue with weight loss and then how to transition into a life long quality diet with a very moderate carbohydrate volume. Join Me Today to Discuss… What is low carb according to “The Protein Power Plan” Phase One – 7-10 Grams of Carbs per meal, plus an optional snack – (21-40 grams a day) Phase Two – 50 Grams of Carbs a day, divided evenly Phase Three – 75-130 Grams a day, no more than 30-35 per meal, better to keep it around 25 The things you need to actually keep this working A scale like this one – Salter Electric Scale A cheat sheet of all things you tend to cook with Discipline to measure and count EVERYTHING The main reason people fail, they don’t count everything or count inaccurately Another reason people fail, cheat days and how to do them right Net carbs the truth and the net carb scam Watch out for zero calorie sweeteners and yes beware of alcohol Per meal is as important as per day limits 10 Meals that Fit Phase One and You Won’t Mind Eating – First Five are In this PDF Cabbage wrapped Sardines with Hemp Seed and Avocado Blackened Fish With Roasted Fennel and Vegetables Jacks Breakfast Sausage and Eggs Moroccan Lamb with Vegetables Pork with Shallots, Apple and Jicama Salmon Nocoise – 3.2 Carbs – Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredient Cookbook – p19 – (recipe) Harissa Chicken – 8.1- Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredient Cookbook – Carbs p107 – (video) Smoky Chorizo Salmon – 3.6 Carbs- Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredient Cookbook – p125 – (video) (recipe) Seared Sesame Tuna – 4.2 Carbs – Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredient Cookbook – p135 – (video) (recipe) Beef Pepper Stew – 6.2 Carbs – Jamie Oliver’s 5 Ingredient Cookbook – p195 – (recipe) Yea this is a big time survival topic #1 Cause of death in the US is “heart disease” #5 Cause of death in the US is stroke #7 Cause of death in the US is is diabetes #9 [...]

 Episode-2489- Dealing with Life’s Transitions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:29:56

Today I was thinking about a lot of things.  One was a friend a very close friend dealing with a major life transition.  That got me thinking to many of my own transitions.  This included realizing that I was on my own as a teenager, joining and leaving the military and moving to Texas.  I also thought about getting what I thought was a dream job, moving my family for it, then losing it due to a buy out.  My son growing up and leaving home, moving to Arkansas and moving back to Texas and more.  Including lost friends, failed relationships and more. As one who believes in synchronicity I was not surprised when the most recent issue of Self Reliance Magazine was on my counter this morning and I opened and saw a column by Dave Duffy called, “Reflections on the Gift of Life”.  I will admit as I love Dave, have met him a few times and read his work for almost 3 decades the first thing I did was scan the article for any warning sings that is was a farewell.  I was very happy to read this line while skimming, “I’m now 75 and healthy so still have some time left to work on my list”.  I then read the rest which was a list of 14 life goals Dave had for himself in life, 11 of which he has done quite well with. All this led to to today’s topic, Dealing with Life’s Transitions.  I thought about how many people I have met in this audience who have had to deal with the loss of family, PTSD from their service, divorce and more and how they have told me that TSP has been so good for them.  So for everyone out there who has had struggles with life’s constant change, today’s show is for you. Join Me Today to Discuss… The Dave Duffy article that made me choose today’s topics Some of my transitions and what I learned from them Realizing that I was on my own at 16 Joining the Army at 17 and coming home at 20 Moving to Texas and being dead broke for the first year The loss of a few good friends Making it to Arkansas and having to come back to Texas The mindset of transition You can’t change yesterday, only learn from it What ever control you have exists today and tomorrow Focus on what there is to be done, on what you can do Set goals, make some relatively easy and get on with them Some Resources I Recommend Illusions and JLS both by Richard Bach Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch (Book – Movie) A Knight’s Tale – No I am Not Kidding (Movie) Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman Things that make me let go of the past and be in the now My wife Gardening Fishing – The Spiritual Fisherman The Stars A Forest Spirko’s 29th Law of Life – “Your past is not a liability.  Those who have achieved the most always seem to come from a life that involved struggle, poverty or adversity.  Usually it is all three.”   Resources for today’s show… Follow Life With Jack on Instagram TSP Facebook Group Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Something’s Coming On – Joe Cocker   Sponsors of the Day Western Botanicals Bulk Ammo   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Today its Friday so it’s time for the expert council show. To ask a question for a show like this, just send an email to me at jack at thesurvivalpodcast.com with “TSPC Expert” in the subject line. Today on The Survival Podcast, the expert council answers questions on exercise, solar power, rebuilding vehicles, raw milk, pastured poultry, pastured pork, soil management and more. In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air. I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between. To get more information on our Expert Council visit our “Meet the Expert Council Page” to learn more about them and their specific areas of expertise. If only 10% of us do this, there is enough for everyone. Hence the futility of revolutionaries who have no gardens, who depend on the very system they attack, and who produce words and bullets, not food and shelter.” ~ Bill Mollison ESOP vs. IRA for retirement Choosing a fuel option for a whole house generator Can the wrong feed make for smelly eggs in your laying flock Why you need the under/over cable and hose wrap method in your life The elimination of iguanas in southern Florida as an invasive species Making a spreadsheet of expensive item serial numbers for theft and insurance protection Choosing a hunting round for medium game with the 357 magnum Fishing kayaks for small to medium ponds   Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Granddaddy’s Gun Club Biltong for Breakfast TSP Android App TSP iPhone App Song of the Day Playlist – 2015 Song of the Day Playlist – 2016 Song of the Day Playlist – 2017 The Over Under Method of Rolling Up Cables and Hoses Ray of Light on SongFacts.com Ray of Light – Curtiss Maldoon   Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2485- John Bush on Kratom | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:34:18

John Bush began his career in activism in 2002 questioning the official account of what happened on 9/11 and speaking out against the wars in the Middle East. He was introduced to libertarianism by the good Dr. Ron Paul in 2007. As he learned of anarchism and agorism he focused his energies on promoting alternative institutions like cryptocurrency and mutual aid groups. His interest in natural health led him to discover kratom and CBD, a natural remedy which he sells through his company Brave Botanicals. As of late he has been promoting self-growth and entrepreneurial strategies and helping people to overcome addiction. Today John joins us to discuss kratom and its use, risks, benefits and side effects.  I decided to bring John on because while he is a kratom proponent he is also honest that it does have some risks and can be problematic if used inappropriately especially by some people.
