Episode-1143- The Patriot Nurse on Medical Prep and Medical Myths | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:16:14

TweetVisit ThePatriotNurse.com to learn more from Rachel The Patriot Nurse. The Patriot Nurse is an actively practicing RN, with a BSN.  In addition to her work in the United States, she has also traveled extensively for medical mission work. She takes a very balanced approach to prepping that is decidedly reason-based.  Many people, after prepping for awhile, begin to realize their preps are covered in the food and weapons arenas.  Medical preparedness is decidedly less glitzy, but it is integral to a well-rounded plan for thriving during times of difficulty.  The Patriot Nurse’s mission it to fill that void for the average Joe. She is currently conducting a nation wide tour teaching her clinics called Medical Prep 101 and Medical Prep 201 respectively.  She may be coming to a town near you soon in fact. We had a great conversation in this interview, we discussed some harsh medical realities along the way and a few myths that can do preppers real harm in some situations.  We also discussed being honest about your needs, your skills and your preps in assessing your next moves.  Episode-1140- Women of Prepping Series Episode Four | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:12:42

TweetFormer Macy’s Addict, now “Queen of Tires, Dirt and Pallets!” After spending 16 years in the real estate business Tabitha Bettencourt changed course to become a 911 dispatcher in the 5th largest city in California. After 9 working in law enforcement during which she met her husband and got married she began watching the economy slide and civilization decline.  Along the way Tabitha and her husband opted to restart their lives on 2 acres of bare land on a hill on the Oregon Coast.  The move was a major downsize in economy but in many ways a major upsize in living. Tabitha now is basically retired from any sort job and instead stays home  in her own words “to build and dig and create while Hubby earns the money and supports me in the Lowe’s habit I have become accustom too”. Tabitha joins us to discuss prepping from a woman’s point of view as the forth member of our female forum.  Episode-1139- Women of Prepping Series Episode Three | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:02

TweetPaula Hradkowsky (rad cow ski) is a 60 year old semi retired former CPA that became a prepper only 5 years ago.  She was raised in a typical middle class household where self reliance was really considered something poor people did. Here parents were both part of the WWII and Depression eras and had tough childhoods.  Like many such individuals they worked hard to make sure their kids had a better life then they did. Fortunately for Paula the experiences of her parents childhood did get planted as a seed inside of her at an early age, though she never realized it until much later in life.  She listened to talk radio discuss problems for years, yet seldom discuss individualized solutions, only political banter.  In 2008 as a woman approaching retirement age she watched the financial recession do a ton of damage.  This woke her up and reconnected her with that seed planted in her by parents who had lived though it all before. In the last five years she has flipped her spouse to the prepping lifestyle.  They now both have concealed carry permits, plenty of stored food and water, stored fuel, two generators and a small garden.  Paula has also been on a paleo style diet for 16 years now and it has been the only thing to help with a chronic health issue she has known as Lupus. She joins us today as the third batter in our Woman of Prepping Series to discuss prepping from an woman’s view, with some amazing insights in how you can get your spouse on board.  Men the way she answers my final question is worth the entire episode three times over, tune in and get some wisdom on how to talk to your wife about prepping that will really hit home.  Episode-1138- Low Input vs. High Input Permaculture Design | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:39

TweetContour Based Wood Core Beds from Today’s Episode I figured now would be a good time to discuss this subject as it applies to two major projects underway at the Spirko homestead.  Of course we just recently completed the contour based wood core garden beds at our first workshop.  Those who attended also got to see the area that will be our “showcase urban forest garden”, an area of 2700-3500 square feet depending on what we actually use of it. The work involved in establishment of these two systems is dramatically different.  One required a lot of initial inputs, mulch, wood cores, heavy equipment, fungal and bacterial inoculation, organic fertilizer  and lots of manual labor.  The result is pretty much a turn key system.  While it will take a year to fully mature, it is a long term and very stable system. The new project, the forest garden will be remarkably low input.  We did dig out one hole for a garden pond based out of a stock tank and a short trench to connect it to one upgrade.  But the work could have been done in a day with a shovel by one person. Today I will contrast these two systems and discuss the permaculture concept of an “energy audit” and why it is critical to our long tern sustainability.  Specifically if the SHTF, we will immediately go into a scenario where what comes out must at least equal what we put in.  Today this is measured in money with no concept of the damage done to the system long term.  Tomorrow that likely won’t be an option. Join Me Today to Discuss… Contour based wood core beds Initial materials 12 yards of wood mulch About 5 tons of wood core 30-40 lbs of blood meal 15-20 lbs of bone meal 5 lbs of cover crop seed 4 days of heavy equipment usage 20 gallons of gasoline Work required and system output analysis One man 2 months 110 feet by hand 20 men, one machine 160 feet in 1.5 days in the rain System life time, annuals 10-15 years, perennials infinite Required ongoing inputs, planting, weeding, fertility, mulching Primary attributes, water harvesting, nutrient retention, erosion resistance 3000 Square Foot Forest Garden Initial Materials Landscaping timbers (20-35) Large spikes (40-70) 2 galvanized stock tanks 6 ft by 2 ft (capacity 840 gallons) 1 galvanized oval end tank 2 x 1 x 6 ft (for reed bed) 4 polyethylene barrels for aquaponics system Gravel for the aquaponics system Pumps for the aquaponics system 1 Polyethylene tank, capacity 1,500 gallons PVC pipes and fittings Hardwood mulch (20-25 yards) Rain gutters for out building Electrical wiring Work required and system output analysis 1 Person, time required unknown but work load is easy Aquaponics system is an add on Required ongoing inputs, planting, weeding, fertility, mulching, pruning System life time infinite for most components Primary attributes, water harvesting, nutrient retention, erosion resistance, protein production, energy conserving Final analysis Forest garden will take longer but require less phyical and machine labor Wood core system is more conducive to row crops Both systems require many initial inputs, the list grows Both systems are true long term systems developing their own cycles The forest garden is more energy conserving and easier to maintain On a larger property the two systems provide for each other Planting and plants must be calculated based on final designs and are not really suited to direct comparison Resources for Today’s Show… Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum TSP Mint TSP Gear WalkingToFreedom Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1134- Understanding and Investing in Silver | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:33:10

TweetCustom Medallions a Just One Option for the Silver Investor. I’ll promise right  up front that this will not be a TSPMint.com infomercial.  In fact I will spend the majority on the show on other types of silver, why silver is a great investment and why many “fears” and “concerns” with buying silver are not worth worrying about. I also want to talk about the real and false reasons behind the recent drop in precious metals pricing.  There are two things going on here, prices should be coming down but not as far and not as fast as they are.  Just as speculation can drive up a commodity (especially when it is going up some via real market forces) so too can speculation drive a commodity down. Additionally I want to really discuss why I suggest only 5-10% of your wealth in silver and gold and why I don’t recommend platinum and palladium in that number.  I will also discuss why I don’t recommend jewels or even really jewelry in that number, though jewelry can be one great way to increase metal holdings. Join Me Today As We Discuss… Why I focus on silver over gold The delta still favors silver Silver has many uses that use it up Silver is the common man’s currency Silver is more widely available and for now incurs less oversight Types of silver and what makes each unique Generic bars and rounds (ounce and fractional) Custom medallions and pieces (ounce and fractional) Collectable silver (numismatic, affinity, etc) Bars (5 ounces and up) American Silver Eagles International Government Issued Silver (Aussie, Canadian, Mexican, etc.) U.S. Pre 65 Silver Coinage (90%) Methods of storing your silver In slab floor safe Fire proof safes Private storage Bank safety deposit box Silver banking (why I don’t like it yet) Paper silver Buried in the ground (don’t do this!) The multi cache method (a little of all) Inventory and audit Don’t think you know, know Don’t think in dollars (it will make you happy and sad about nothing) Do inventory types, not just ounces Do photograph items in type stacks (for insurance) Do update your inventory often Final thoughts If you don’t think you can afford silver right now you can’t Take a balanced approach This is not likely to make you rich, but it might, who knows Selling silver is never as smart as trading it Don’t worry about confiscation, really don’t do it Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Mint TSP Gear Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) Bulk Ammo – (sponsor of the day) Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. This was while her husband was making $10 an hour and she was waitressing in Dallas. They went from spending 100% of our money to saving enough money to buy our tiny house and land.  Amazingly after all that they ended up having to help family with most of that savings. Despite the set back, they pressed on.  They now own 4.7 acres in the Ozarks of Arkansas and live full time in their tine 150sqft home in the woods.  They are now establishing the homestead, adding livestock, creating a small business and live life in a truly free way.  Episode-1130- All About Urban Homesteading | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:57

TweetKelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen authors of The Urban Homestead and the blog Root Simple Given the announcement I made today about SilverBulletSilverShield.com it seems this is also an appropriate topic, I imagine some will get that aside and some won’t.  Today indeed we will discuss urban homesteading or as is often the more accurate term, suburban homesteading, but I just really feel like calling it urban homesteading today. Today I feel like I am somewhere in the middle, I am certainly not in the urban homestead camp nor even the suburban homestead camp as I sit on 3 acres in a quite rural and unincorporated area.  I did have an urban homestead not long ago in Arlington, TX. From there we went to a true mountain homestead and now we have what is more accurately a mini ranch.  All of this though has taught me a great deal about the advantages that exist in everything from large holdings to small lots.  The entire thing is a system of checks and balances, for everything you gain with one property, you loose the advantages of another. Join Me Today As We Discuss… What really makes an urban homestead “urban”, size, location, what? What are some unique challenges and concerns for the urban homesteader? How much land do you really need to have a true homestead feel? What things must you avoid 100% if you are to have a enjoyable urban homestead? How do animals fit into the equation, how do you pacify neighbors and avoid issues? What are some things you can do to increase self reliance even in the city? What are some real advantages of urban homesteading? How might a group pool resources and buy property with common property lines? Why I feel restoring the homestead in all locations is the solution to many of America’s problems Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Members Support Brigade 13Skills.com Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Mint TSP Gear Back Yard Food Production – (sponsor of the day) Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) My Video About SilverBulletSilverShield The Urban Farming Guys Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
