Derek Larsen, who has encountered Japanese ceramics when he was at university in the US, is now a professional potter based in Kyoto, Japan. Derek will visit Sydney with two other potters from Kyoto this week to participate in an event which showcases sake and shuki (sake utensils, 酒器) , which the three potters, Derek, Kasumi Ueba, and Aki Katayama made. Derek explains why he chose anakama' one of the most difficult and time-consuming techniques in pottery and shares his passion for it. Chase Kojima, born and raised in the US, is Executive Chef and founder of Sokyo, one of the renowned Japanese restaurants in Sydney. Chase and his team at Sokyo recently appeared on the SBSs TV program The Chefs Line and cooked against four home cooks. Chase shares his experience on set and how unique and special it was. Chases motto is not to be lazy and try to keep improving yourself every day so even after the big face-off on TV, nothing has changed, his battle with himself as a chef never stops. The Chefs Line is broadcast weeknights at 6pm on SBS. The new episode featuring Japanese cuisine and Sokyo starts on the 19th of June. On 31 May 1942, three Japanese midget submarines enter the Sydney Harbour and carried out the surprise attack in which six Japanese submariners and twenty one Australian Naval personnel lost their lives.
