Fat 2 Fit Show #16 – Body Image and Self Esteem | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

In the movie "The Matrix", your "real body" is somewhere else and you live your life in a computer simulation. The way that your body appears in the Matrix is your "residual self-image", or in other words, your brain makes your Body Image into reality. We discuss Body Image and the implications of having a negative or positive one. Many people have a Body Image that isn't realistic or similar to what their real body looks like. We talk about how your body image can actually affect your subconscious reasoning and impact your conscious behaviors for good or for bad. There was a new documentary on TLC entitled "My Shocking Story, Too Young to Be So Fat". It raised some serious concerns from both Jeff and Russ about the childhood obesity epidemic that is going on. We discussed a 13 year old girl who was morbidly obese and wanted weight loss surgery. We brought up the topic about responsibility with obesity in children. A parent is 100% responsible for an obese child at 5 years old, but what about a 15 year old? We decide that we will tackle this issue on an upcoming episode. In our email and comment section, Russ was informed about where the term "Phedippidations" came from, Jeff answered a question on doing cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, Russ answered a query about eating at your Basal Metabolic Rate or slightly below, and Jeff responded to a comment about whether to count the calories in "Negative Calorie Foods". We played our first comment that came in from our voice mail line from James. In our news section, Jeff brought up a new weight loss scam that is currently being advertised. "Eat all you want and still lose weight" is the mantra of its advertising campaign. With a little discussion, is was painfully obvious as to the ridiculousness of the product and it's claims. Russ discussed an article from Consumer Reports that discussed eating soup or salad before your meal to help with weight loss and also some other great points.  Fat 2 Fit Show #15 – Fast Food and Dieting Detours | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

In this show, we cover how to survive in a Fast Food world. In a perfect world, everyone would always have nutritious meals handy and would never need to eat Fast Food. In reality, there will always be times when you will have no choice but to eat at these restaurants. We discuss how to eat out and not blow your diet, and give tips and advice on the best and worst things to eat. In our comments and email section, we answered an email from Jon who was looking for an easier running program to get started, Farah asked us about what we though about the "Eat Clean Diet", and a short listener profile from Karen. Jeff's first news item dealt with a picture that showed an MRI photo of an obese person vs a person of a healthy weight. It is quite an amazing picture and you can see how fat crowds internal organs. We then moved on to a lengthy article which dealt with a wide range of possible dieting detours and their solutions. Russ found a cool website that will tell you how much activity you need to do to lose one pound of fat. You enter your weight and then choose from a wide variety of activities and it tells you how long you need to do that activity.  Fat 2 Fit Show # 14 – Running for Fat Loss | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

How do you effectively use running for weight loss? How do you even get started if you haven't run farther than the distance from your couch to your fridge in years? How do you make sure that you will progress but not get injured along the way? We cover all of the basics and give suggestions and links for running podcasts and training programs. In our Listener E-mail section we answered questions that dealt with monitoring your heart rate while exercising, counting calories if you already eat natural whole foods, and why all popcorn is not the same for health and calories. In our news section, Russ found several studies that pointed to evidence that moderate drinking and exercise were they key to a long life. What was really surprising, was that people who drank moderately lived longer than people who didn't. Jeff referred to an article out of Oprah Magazine that dealt with the latest craze of "medically supervised" weight loss clinics. Jeff surmised that these clinics are no better than any other diet center who is desperately trying to get its piece of the almighty weight loss dollar. He looked at a specific clinic that puts people on a starvation diet of 400-500 calories, does not want people to exercise, provides expensive vitamin injections, and prescribes other medications and supplements to basically keep you from dying while in your starvation diet. Jeff's guess at how many people will keep the weight off for long term after going on a "medically supervised" weight loss diet would be less than 1% - much less than 1%...  Fat 2 Fit Show #13 – New Years Resolutions & Goal Setting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This may be the most important show of the entire year. Everyone sets New Years Resolutions and almost everyone gives up within the first few months. We cover the strategies that you need to make all of your New Years Goals a reality. Just to prove how powerful goal setting can be, we talk about a 20 year study that tracked Yale University Grads. When the graduating class was interviewed and asked if they had clearly written goals along with a plan to achieve them, only 3% did. After 20 years, those 3% were worth more financially that all of the other 97% combined! There is power in setting powerful goals and having a plan of action to accomplish them. There is now an easier way to get to the Fat2Fit Radio Support Group on Traineo. We now have a simpler address that will take you there. Just go to www.fat2fitsupport.com and that will take you to http://fat2fit.groups.traineo.com. The community is growing fast and is becoming quite active with new members joining every day.  Fat 2 Fit Show #12 – Buy Yourself A Fitness Gift | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This is the Special Holiday Show! Christmas is now past, and perhaps you didn't get all the fitness products you had hoped for. Here is our top 12 list of gifts that you could buy for yourself. 1. Podrunner Podcast - it's free, hour long music mixes. Each one is designed to match a certain heart rate. For example, if you want an intense workout, choose a music mix that will match your heart rate at 170 bpm. 2. MP3 Player - not only for listening to podcasts, but also music tracks that will get you to move! You don't need an iPod, any MP3 player will do. 3. Large 12 month dry-erase marker calendar - use this to plan out your goals and keep track of your fitness successes. 4. Workout Arm Band - For your new MP3 player. You can't just hold the player in your hand while running. An arm band will hold your MP3 player in place while keeping your hands free to workout. 5. Fitness Ball - Both the small and large versions of the fitness balls are great, especially when accompanied with a DVD to help you get the most out of the ball. 6. Shoes - How to buy the right athletic shoe. The most overlooked, but very important item. Proper running shoes for walking and running, cross trainers for going to the gym and doing aerobics. 7. Yoga Mat - For those looking to get into Yoga, you'll probably need a mat. Carpet burns aren't fun. 8. The Local Rental Shop - before you buy any large piece of fitness equipment, try renting for a month or two to see if you will really enjoy and use it. It will probably cost you the same monthly as a gym membership, but you won't be saddled paying off something you don't use if you don't like it. 9. Adjustable Weight Bench - Incline, bench press, leg press, with the right set of free weights and an adjustable bench, you can get quite the workout without going to the gym. Pair the adjustable dumbbells with a small bench. 10. Body Fat Scale - body fat percentage is much more important than your weight. These scales will tell you your weight and body fat percentage and a whole lot more. 11. Adjustable Dumbbells - Dumbbells that easily adjust from one weight to the next. They come in one nice neat package. 12. Garmin Forerunner GPS Watch - Track your walking, running, bike rides, inline skating, etc. with the use of GPS technology. It will tell you your speed, heart rate, elevation, pace, etc. Once you get back home, you can import the information from the watch into a free program called Sport Tracks. This will link to Google Earth maps and it will graph and track every possible about your workout. For example, how fast were you moving on that big hill, what was your heart rate, and how did it compare to all of your other runs that went up that hill.  Fat 2 Fit Show #11 – Our Support Community is Now Here | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We did a post about a month ago entitled "Support in Weight Loss" which dealt with places where people can get some support and motivation in their fitness goals. In response to a couple of e-mails and a comment from a listener looking for other "F2F listeners" who use the free site "Traineo", we decided to create a "Fat2Fit Radio Traineo Group". If you join up for free on Traineo you can find our "Fat2Fit Radio Group" there. There you can meet up with other listeners with similar fitness goals and you can even sign up Russ and Jeff as your "Personal Motivators". Here is the direct link to the group: http://fat2fit.groups.traineo.com/ Russ' news stories this week dealt with the surprising fact that obesity levels in the United States might actually be leveling off, and the absolute 20 worst restaurant foods in America. Jeff's first story dealt with some great weight loss tips and suggestions. His second story was entitled "How to Make Exercise More Fun than Sex" ... that would be great, wouldn't it. Has public opinion gone too far? Every child knows that Santa is "Jolly and Fat". Does seeing an overweight Santa cause children later in life to gain weight because of this? Is seeing a fat man in a red suit really a horrible negative influence that no child should be exposed to in their formative years? We investigate this controversy and ask for listener feedback. Speaking of the Holidays, how do you keep the food temptations in check? We discuss some strategies to do this without suffering from guilt later on. Any suggestions or tips?  Fat 2 Fit Show #10 – Do All Diet Books Actually Work? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

It is pretty hard to find a diet program or book that doesn't work if you follow their suggested plan exactly step by step. Everybody will lose at least some weight. So... if every program out there works, why are there any overweight people left, or for that matter why do we need more than a couple of diet books or programs since they all work? We discuss seven of the popular diet programs that we have followed and why they didn't succeed in the long run. We give plenty of advice and suggestions from things that we have learned over the years of trying to follow commercial diet programs. A listener comment about a current diet book that suggested that you should not eat mini meals through-out the day sent our research team into high gear. We covered tons of reasons and research that points to the benefits of eating many times during the day. This also led us to ponder why so many different diet books have totally opposite advice. Jeff's news articles dealt with a study that showed just how expensive "good" food is compared to "junk" food per calorie, and some no-nonsense advice about the 4 principles of weight loss. Russ had a great story that dealt with the Kimkins diet scandal. The Kimkins diet turned out to be an unhealthy and unrealistic diet complete with faked before and after photos. So many people became ill on the program that a class-action lawsuit has been launched. Links mentioned in the show: Research on Leptin Study: more meals per day, lower average BMI NY Times article: Cost of Good Vs Bad Food 7 Tips for eating healthy on a budget The only 4 things you need to know about weight loss The Kimkins diet scandal Recipe of the Week: Low Fat Tuna Sandwich Listen here, or subscribe to automatically receive future shows.

Fat 2 Fit Show #9 – Some Weighty Issues | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Weight lifting to lose weight? We discuss the benefits of weight lifting in losing weight and it's benefits in your overall appearance. We were not too concerned in looking like bodybuilders, but adults lose over half a pound of muscle every year as they age, so just maintaining your muscles takes work! We cover some basic misconceptions of resistance training, a talk about a very simple program to get started. We had a great comment on the blog from a dieter who lost weight on a carbohydrate reduced diet and started gaining the weight back when she started eating almonds. We discussed three reasons why this most likely happened. If you have any questions or comments for us, send us an email or leave a comment on the blog and we will discuss your topic on the show. Jeff really got "his geek on" this week and searched through the published medical literature and found a study on The South Beach Diet. All of the nutrition and health facts from the book were examined individually to see if they had a scientific basis in the published peer-reviewed medical journals. The results were very surprising. His second article dealt with "negative calorie" foods. Yes, there are foods out there that take more calories to chew and digest than they actually have in them. Russ found an excellent study that showed exercise was just as effective as a common depression drug. His second article dealt with a list of common foods that are thought to be healthy, but turn out to be just the opposite. Links mentioned in the show: A study that did a fact check on The South Beach Diet Negative Calorie foods - Myths and facts 7 foods you may think are healthy, but aren't Exercise is Just as good as depression medications The Evils of Almonds The Tony Furguson Diet Body For Life Diet Listen here, or subscribe to automatically receive future shows.

 Fat 2 Fit Show #8 – Don’t be a Skinny Fattie! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The main topic of this week's show was how to find out how much you should weigh, what your Body Mass Index should be, and what body fat percentage you should aim for. The problem is, all of these indicators of health seem to contradict each other. Is it even possible for everyone to be successful at all of them, no matter how fit they are? A past American Surgeon General says that the most popular method today is bunk and shouldn't be used anymore - which one do you think it is? Everyone knows that having a support system in place is very helpful for weight loss. We discussed last week the possibility of starting some sort of community here that would support and promote sensible weight loss and fitness goals. We received some positive feedback this week, so we will be looking into that possibility in more detail. Jeff found a news story from the New York Times that was a review of several studies that showed exercise was better for your mind than all of the brain exercise products out there such as Sudoku or Brain Age. Russ found a couple of articles that told us even more reasons not to drink Soda. Jeff discussed an article he wrote that listed his top 10 ways to motivate yourself to exercise and how to make it a habit, and of course we finished off with your homework assignment for the week.  Fat 2 Fit Show #7 – The World is Fat – Really, Really Fat | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We start off the show discussing a "60 Minutes" segment about forcing fast food restaurants in New York to list the calories of all of their foods right on their menu boards. Will this encourage people to eat healthier, or will they just ignore the extra info? Jeff's news stories dealt with a study showing that more children are starting to diet, purge, and use diet pills than ever before, and the growing data that shows that there are now more obese people in developing countries than hungry ones. Russ' first news story also dealt with the increasing number of Americans who are now obese and a review of 5 common infomercial fitness machines. Our main topic of the show was support in weight loss and fitness. The ideal would be to have a partner who is going through all of the same struggles and challenges that you are in your journey to fitness. In reality, this doesn't always happen. So where can you go for support? We talk about some traditional "brick and mortar" places for support and some online places that might help you as well. We also mull over the possibility of creating a non-commercial support community at Fat 2 Fit Radio. Links mentioned in the show: The Five Tiers of food yet again!  Fat 2 Fit Show #6 – You Are What You Eat | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

This really was the food show. Last week we talked about the macronutrients of foods and this week we focused on what to actually eat. We found a great website that has a huge list of food choices grouped into 5 tiers. If you really want to know what to eat, choose your foods from the top three tiers. If you want to have the perfect diet, choose from the top two. We also talked about the absolute best and worst foods to eat and gave our list of our top 7 nutritional strategies. We moved on to discussing a comment from our blog that asked about our opinions on the over-the-counter weight loss drug Alii and it's side effects. We link to an article where 60 people have commented on their side effects. "Anal Leakage" was a common term that people brought up... Russ' news articles dealt with the Great American Smoke-Out and the five best foods to have in your diet. Jeff's news stories dealt with a success story of a woman who lost 124 lbs in 17 months through diet, exercise and hard work, and a study that dealt with diet versus exercise for fat loss.  Fat 2 Fit Show #5 – Susan Powter Made Me Fat | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We start this week's show off with our first Fat 2 Fit undercover investigation of a "Whole Body Vibration" clinic where they claim to help you lose weight. Jeff the Jock went in and stood on a vibrating machine and jiggled all over for 6 minutes. He was then told that he just did the equivalent of a 45 minute intense workout - could it be true? Is Jeff about to fork out $25 per 10 minute shaking session in the future? More details are here... We do a mini-review of the past shows to highlight some of the most important weight loss and fitness points that we covered. This Podcast is intended to be educational and also progress in the topics that we cover, so this will be a new feature every five episodes. A listener email about the benefits of fat got us started on a tangent about the horrors of the low-fat craze in the last few decades. One of the most popular proponents of "fat makes you fat" was Susan Powter. She encouraged people to "Stop the Insanity" and eat as much as they wanted as long as it was low in fat. Millions of people followed her advice, and it is true that the amount of fat that people now consume has drastically gone down in the last few decades, but obesity has drastically gone up in the same time. Was she totally wrong? Has nutritional advice become like religious dogma? Studies have shown that people can be healthy at both extremes. Jeff's news stories dealt with companies who fire employees who are overweight or smoke and an interactive map of the United States where you can watch the increasing levels of obesity in Americans over the last 16 years. Russ' news stories dealt with tips for eating healthy on a budget, and using your mind to help with weight loss. Our main discussion topic of the week was the basics of nutrition. Carbohydrates, protein and fat - what are they, how much of each should you really eat? What is really the difference between all of the popular diets out there anyway? We finish with the recipe of the week, your fitness homework and of course a motivational quote.  Fat 2 Fit Show #4 – Weight Loss Scams or Hard Work? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Why do people have different metabolisms? We talk about some of the differences including genetics, sex and muscle mass. We respond to three listener responses that dealt with goal setting, a 540 lb man who can't seem to lose any weight, and the evils of hiding vegetables in your children's food. Jeff's news stories both dealt with weight loss scams and products that offer more than they can deliver. Russ' first story dealt with why the French eat so luxuriously, yet don't seem to be as heavy as Americans. His next story discussed the evils of trans fats and which fast food restaurants were the ones to avoid. We continue to chat about doing cardio and the different exercises that you can do for fat loss. The different options all burn varying amount of calories, but the most important factor is to find activities that you will enjoy and actually do on a regular basis. We are back to our regular recipe of the week, your weekly homework assignment and of course the motivational quote.  Fat 2 Fit Radio #3 – Do Your Genetics Control What You Eat? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

We start the show off with a quick review of goal setting from the previous show and discuss what your weekly weight loss goals should be for permanent weight loss. Our news stories today dealt with the genetic factors of over-eating and the food choices that you make. Is there such a thing as a "fat" gene? Here is a secret genetic tidbit for readers of the blog and show-notes. "A recent study has found that diarrhea is genetic. It was proven that indeed diarrhea runs in your jeans." We also discuss different workout goals and focus on the basics of cardio for burning fat. We talk about the smart way to get into a fitness program so that you can see constant improvement with minimal soreness. You also get to feel Russ' pain as he relates his experiences in the gym as the opposite way that people should get started.
