Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- President Lula Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is the thirty-fifth president of Brazil and one of the most popular Brazilian presidents of all times. "Lula" was his nickname until he added it to his legal name in 1982. His unique life trajectory from poverty to presidency is an inspiration for many people worldwide. Lula was born in a poor family in Recife in 1945. The seventh of eight children, he moved along with his family to Sao Paulo when still young and worked as a shoeshiner and street vendor to help with his home's income. He got his first formal job at age fourteen as a factory worker. At age nineteen, he lost his little finger on the left hand while working as a press operator. He worked his way up until he became the president of the Steel Worker's Union at age thirty-three. While working with the union, Lula helped organize strikes, which led him to jail in times of a military regime. His position as Union leader brought him closer to influential people and intellectuals with whom he came to found the Workers Party in 1980. After losing the elections for the state government of Sao Paulo in 1982, he joined in the movement called "Direct Now!" urging for the direct election of the president who was chosen by an electoral college at that time. Finally in 1989, the country once again had direct elections for president, and Lula was one of the candidates. Not being elected, he ran again in 1989, 1994, and 1998, until he was finally elected in 2002. With a much more moderated position after so many years, he managed to be reelected in 2006. Lula's career path has attracted international attention since he became preside [...]

Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Prestes One of the biggest symbols of socialism in Brazil is Luis Carlos Prestes, a revolutionary known as "the Knight of Hope." His marches have inspired generations and are still reflected in Brazilian society. He was a man who refused to become president mainly because of his strong ideals and convictions against the way politics were being done in the country. Prestes started his career in the military in 1919. Inspired by the Russian Revolution and the growth of communism in the world, he put troops together and tried to put down the president of the time - failing. This didn't bring him down, and he continued getting more revolutionary troops together from all around the country. The incredible military mass put together was the biggest one to ever be recorded in world history and became known as "Prestes Column." The column marched over twenty-five hundred kilometers of Brazilian territory for over two years, fighting against the government's authoritarianism. They argued for the secret vote because the elections were being controlled by elites threatening voters who had no protection by anonymity. But Prestes didn't stay in Brazil; he moved to the Soviet Republic in 1931 and from there joined the Brazilian Communist Party. In 1934, finally returning to Brazil, he was elected the president of the National Liberty Alliance, a socialist group against the government of President Vargas. In 1935, the group was responsible for a huge manifest known as the Communist Uprising. Prestes was one of the central figures of Brazilian politics in the twentieth century. His wife, Olga Benario, was also a communist. He was arrested a few times and also exiled. His constant fight for democracy makes him one of the heroes of the country. --------------------------- Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101!
