Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- The Heart of Brazil A very fragile but lovely biome is the Pantanal, the largest floodplain in the world. It is considered a World Natural Heritage and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It has flora and fauna of abundant and rare beauty and is home to several endangered animals. Fortunately, Pantanal is still considered the most preserved and untouched ecosystem of the planet. Being among the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, the Pantanal is located in the heart of South America. The best moments of the day in the Pantanal are at dawn and sunset when all of the Pantanal turns into sounds and colors. Currently, there are hotels or farms adapted to receive tourists with comfort in the region that offer horseback riding, boat trips, pick-up, or trekking. Specialized ecological guides usually accompany these tours. Another lovely place in the Midwest of Brazil is the city of Bonito. First of all, its name already suggests how the place should be. A great place for ecotourism, Bonito has rivers of turquoise water, caves, and waterfalls. In the rivers, you can practice diving and snorkeling, having the feeling of being in a giant aquarium. The cave of Lago Azul is considered a natural monument by the IPHAN (National Artistic and Historical Heritage Institute of Brazil); it is ninety meters deep and under a crystal-clear lake lined with stalactites and stalagmites. During the January and December mornings, the sun shi [...]

Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101.com! Your Portuguese professor has decided to make today's lesson a little more…interesting. You exchange looks with your classmates who appear to be just as skeptical as you are, but he is the professor and at least it should be fun…right? The first picture he shows you is of chimpanzees with their children hanging off of them. Hmm…as you begin to explain what the jungle animal looks like in Portuguese, you realize he might be on to something. The next picture shows wild boars standing around eating in groups. Your classmates appear to be catching on as well as they start to explain in Portuguese, "People stand around eating and chewing and munching their food." You had no idea how much fun this could be! And as skeptical as you were, your professor must have known that in reality, life is just a big jungle and we are all just civilized animals playing out the parts. Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Professora: Classe! Atenção! Hoje falaremos sobre raízes. Sim, Mariana? Professora: Excelente. ----Formal English---- Professor: Class! Attention! Today we'll talk about roots. Yes, Mariana? Mariana: But teacher, aren't we in Portuguese class? I hate botany. Professor: Yes, Mariana, we are in Portuguese class. Today we're going to talk about word roots. Mariana, could you read the first paragraph on page 254? Mariana: Yes. So, according to the textbook, a grammatical root is—"A primary or irreducible radical of a language, common to all words in that word family such as, for example, the root fug-, present in fugir, fugaz, refúgio, etc. Or like cham- in chamar and chamado." Professor: Exactly, Mariana. So, the root is the part of the verb or noun that shows the general idea of the word. In linguistics, they call a root a radical or a lexical. Mariana: Isn't that what they call the fundamental part of Chinese characters? Professor: Yes Mariana. Could you give us a definition for character? Mariana: Sure. My dictionary says the following—"a sign, letter, symbol, number, punctuation mark, or any figure used in writing." Professor: Excellent. --------------------------- Learn Portuguese with PortuguesePod101! Don't forget to stop by PortuguesePod101.com for more great Portuguese Language Learning Resources!
