Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- The Royal Swedish Opera Operan, the Royal Swedish Opera, is the place where all opera singers and ballet dancers dream of performing. It is Sweden's national stage for both of these art forms. Located in downtown Stockholm, the current building actually dates from the late 1800s. However, the opera company's history dates all the way back to the late 1700s, when King Gustav III founded it. The company performed the first opera in Swedish there in 1773. Construction on the original opera house began in 1775 and was completed in 1782. The building was designed by Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz and was essentially a symbol of enlightened absolutism. It had a portico done in Corinthian tetrastyle, with four statues and an image of the crown on top of it all. The auditorium was oval and for its day had incredible sight lines and amazing acoustics. In 1882 the old building was knocked down so a new building could replace it. The new design was done by Axel Johan Anderberg and took seven years to complete. King Oscar II inaugurated it. One of the major distinctions of the new building was the addition of the words "Lungl. Teatern," which means "Royal Theatre." The locals refer to it as Operan, which translates as "opera." The current building has arches in the façade and is an example of neo-classical architecture. The foyer was done in gold and has a majestic marble staircase leading up to the auditorium. The theater seats twelve hundred people and is a bit smaller than the auditorium in the previous building. Guided tours of the opera house are available Saturday afternoons with tickets available at the entrance. Most of the productions by the Royal Swedish Opera and the Royal Swedish Ballet are performed in the original language, although Swedish subtitles are generally included. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog #20 - Top 10 Swedish Holidays and Festivals: Nationaldagen | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:12

Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Sweden's National Day Sweden's National Day is celebrated on the 6th of June. It is celebrated to commemorate that King Gustav Vasa was elected King of Sweden in 1523 and 1809, when Sweden established a government. The National Day is also known as the Swedish Flag Day. Sometime during the 1800s, the 6th of June became the National memorial day. In 1809 the parliament wrote the current form of government that ruled public citizen rights, including opinion and freedom of speech which were important steps towards the democracy that we live in today. Sweden is a democratic country with peace, freedom and respect for human rights, no matter what religion or origin they belong to. Sweden's National Day is the day when we celebrate these values, greet new citizens, and celebrate Sweden as a free nation with a free government. In Sweden we celebrate Independence Day by eating smorgasbord, and drinking schnapps. Crayfish are also a popular dish. All around Sweden events are organized and almost every municipality has its own celebration with speeches, songs and music by local residents. There are events held at the Swedish embassies abroad. There is obviously a big celebration that the royal family participates in. Well-known artists and bands perform as well. This event is televised and held at Skansen in Stockholm. Every year on the National Day there is a discussion that the National Day is associated with racism. For example, at some schools it is forbidden to sing the national anthem. This has arisen from the racist groups that hold "The peoples' march" every year, where they scream hateful words and use racial terms. It is terrible that those who aren't racists but love their country and want to celebrate it [...]

Get Him to the Greek.
