Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Roxette Den svenska popduon Roxette består av Per Gessle och Marie Fredriksson. Bland deras hitlåtar ingår kända titlar som "The Look," "It Must Have Been Love" och "Fading Like A Flower." ----Formal English---- Roxette Swedish pop duo Roxette is made up of Per Gessle and Marie Fredricksson. Their hit songs included well-known titles like "The Look," "It Must Have Been Love," and "Fading Like a Flower." Roxette was at the height of its popularity in the 1990s, recording nineteen Top 40 hits in the UK and four number one hits in the U.S. The duo has sold about sixty million records all over the world, and their albums Look Sharp! and Joyride went platinum in the U.S. Fredricksson and Gessle met for the first time in the late 1970s. At that time, Gessle belonged to the popular Swedish band Gyllene Tider, and Fredricksson was in the band Mama's Children. They both left their respective bands, embarking on solo careers until they came together to form Roxette in the 1980s. Fredricksson was actually singing backup for Gyllene Tider on one of the band's albums, and U.S. record label Capitol Records expressed interest in the band then, although representatives told them that they needed a new name. They selected the name Roxette, although their U.S. album essentially bombed. A couple years later, the managing director of EMI, the parent company of Capitol Records, told Gessle and Fredricksson that they should sing together instead of having a full band. The two recorded the song "Neverending Love" in 1986 under the Roxette name and found instant success. In all, Roxette's credits include eight studio albums, one remix album, and eight compilation albums so far. They have been nominated for more than ten music awards and have won most of the awards they were nominated for. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog S2 #14 - Top 10 Swedish Movies: Det sjunde inseglet | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:17

Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- The Seventh Seal On the surface, Ingmar Bergman's acclaimed film The Seventh Seal is about a man playing chess with the Grim Reaper, but underneath the surface, it seeks to answer many poignant questions about life. The 1957 Swedish film was written and directed by Bergman and stars Max von Sydow and Bengt Ekerot. The movie takes place in medieval times when the Black Death was taking its toll on Europe. Antonius Block, a knight, has just come home with his squire after fighting in the Crusades. The Black Plague has ravaged their home country of Sweden, and immediately after they arrive in their homeland, the Grim Reaper, or Death, sets upon Block to take his life. Block, however, has other ideas. He had been playing a game of chess with himself, and he challenges the Grim Reaper to a match. Block's plan at first isn't necessarily to beat Death, but to at least put off his own demise for as long as he can stretch the game out. As Block and the Grim Reaper play their game of chess, Block and his squire journey to Block's castle. The game board comes out periodically through the trip, and we meet many interesting and discouraging characters along the way. For most of the movie, no one but Block sees the Grim Reaper, and everyone believes he's playing chess by himself. Inside a church confessional on the way to his castle, Block tells the priest, who turns out to be the Grim Reaper, that he's using his chess game with the Grim Reaper to complete "one meaningful deed." Later, the husband of a family traveling with Block and his squire says that h [...]
