Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Lapland The entire region of Lapland stretches through all of the Scandinavian countries and into the Kola Peninsula area of Russia. The Swedish part of the region is a major tourist hub and includes about twenty-five percent of the nation's land. The charm of Lapland lies in its dramatic landscapes and untamed wilderness. Tourists who visit the area enjoy a time of tranquility and all the best things nature has to offer. Hiking is among Lapland's most popular activities because of the gorgeous panoramas. Mountains, forests, rivers, and wide vistas combine to create a vast and varied region that no nature lover would want to miss. Heading into Lapland in Sweden usually begins with a stop in Kiruna, a town that's about ninety minutes from Stockholm via airplane. But Kiruna serves only as a gateway to the wondrous paradise that is the Lapland region. Lapland is also home to a number of incredible resorts, like Abisko and Bjorkliden. If mountain climbing is something you enjoy, you won't want to miss Mt. Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in all of Sweden. Another major stop in Lapland is the Icehotel, the world's largest hotel made entirely of snow and ice. Many parts of Lapland are on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Among them is Abisko National Park, one of the oldest parks in northern Europe. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog #19 - Top 10 Swedish Holidays and Festivals: Nyår | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:42

Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- New Years New Years is a traditional holiday celebrated at the start of the new year. In the world there are different religious and cultural calendars and New Years is not only important for believers. In Sweden, the New Year is celebrated on the night of New Year's Eve on 31st December and New Year's Day on 1st January. The strike of midnight is the transition to the new year. Christmas is a festival that is celebrated with family, but New Years is celebrated usually with friends. It is customary to celebrate it in the form of a dinner or a New Years party. Nowadays there are many events taking place during New Years and instead of having dinner and a party at home many go out to clubs or a cruise to celebrate the New Year, but most people prefer to celebrate it at home with their friends. The party is usually more exclusive than usual and you should be formally dressed. Shortly before midnight it is customary to go out and fire off fireworks or watch others. It is also common that you bring out the champagne to be opened and drunk at midnight. The minute before midnight it is common to count down and in public places there is usually a clock showing how long it is left until the new year. At midnight people say happy new years to eachother and cheer and hug everyone. After midnight and the cheers you usually go back in to hang out for a few more hours. Just before New Years, It is common to write down or set a New Year's resolution. A New Year's resolution is usually about something to start doing, such as to lose five kilograms or learn a new language, or to stop doing something, such as to stop smoking. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101!  Advanced Audio Blog #17 - Top 10 Swedish Holidays and Festivals: Lucia | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:06

Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Lucia Lucia is celebrated on the 13th of December and marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations. There are two main traditions celebrated on Lucia Day—a Swedish tradition and a Sicilian tradition. The Swedish tradition has its origins in both pagan and Christian customs. According to folklore, the 13th of December is a dangerous night. Many supernatural beings come out that night and it was believed that animals could speak on this night. There is also a belief that Lussi or Lusse the Old Hag, a female creature with vicious qualities, like a female demon or witch, rode through the air with her companions. It is said to be very dangerous to be out on Lussinatta and children who have not been good have to be extra careful. Before the Julian calendar ended in Sweden and Finland in 1753, Lucia night was the longest night. It was believed that a lot of supernatural beings came out, and therefore it was considered best to stay inside and stay awake all night. Because it was the darkest night, candles were lit to get the light to return. Therefore, the tradition of a candle-bearing woman may have originated from a pagan goddess. Nowadays Lucia is celebrated in schools, kindergartens, clubs, and many workplaces. Children usually go out in Lucia Parades and "lussar" to their parents and neighbors and sing. For the songs they sing, the children usually get candy in return. In most towns and cities a Lucia is nominated through various votes. Every year, the largest Lucia concert takes place at the Globe Arena in Stockholm, where Adolf Fredrik's Music Classes, the Stockholm Music School, and Stockholm Wind Ensemble play and sing. There is also a tradition of inviting the Nobel Prize winners to the Grand Hotel for a Lucia Parade show on the morning of December 13th. --------------------------- [...]
