Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101.com! You are enjoying what was a quiet picnic lunch in a quiet park, when suddenly, your children come barreling towards you screaming! It seems like it takes ten minutes to calm them and their friends down enough so that you can concentrate on one voice at a time! Your son yells in Swedish, "Mom, mom!!! We were at the pond and we saw something moving in the water!!" His friend, equally excited, continues in Swedish, "Come see, come see!! Pleeeease! What IS it?" Laughing, both out of relief and because they are adorable, you agree to go explore the depths of the pond with them. As you reach the edge of the water, both boys are tugging at you and screaming in Swedish, "See it? There it is!! What is that???" You move a little closer to get a better look, almost stumbling into the water (which you are SURE they would have enjoyed tremendously), when you realize what it is they are talking about. You point to the little swimmer in the water and tell the boys in Swedish, "That is a frog...and that one there, that is a newt." The boys stare into the water with a newfound fascination; you can almost hear the wheels spinning in their heads, when they turn and look at you and both reply in Swedish, "Can we keep him, can we keep him?  Advanced Audio Blog #11 - Top 10 Swedish Holidays and Festivals: Alla Hjärtans Dag | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:57

Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- St. Valentine's Day St. Valentine's Day is a holiday that is celebrated on the 14th of February. It is not only celebrated in Sweden, but also in other countries like USA, Japan, England, and France. It is a holiday that dates all the way back to the medieval times, but it has roots even before that. It is unknown how St. Valentine's Day came to be, but it is quite certain that the Catholic Church celebrated a saint by the name of Valentinius at the end of the 400s. But it is still unknown who Valentinius actually was. According to a medieval tale, St. Valentinius gave back the sight to his prison guard's daughter. There is another tale with Roman roots. In this tale is is said the St. Valentine who was a christian in Rome in the 200s was sentenced to decapitation after defying Emperor Cladius II and marrying many young couples. Before Valentine's death he wrote a letter to the woman he loved—the guard's daughter. In the 1300s St. Valentine's Day became a party for teenagers and loved ones. It became this way because they thought that they should do the same as the birds, and find a partner in early spring. After that the goal was to stay together for at least 1 year. From this, St. Valentines Day became associated with love. In Sweden you can celebrate it however you want, but it's about doing something special for the one you love or like and to celebrate love in general. Usually the presents I buy are, for example, chocolate, flowers (especially roses), teddy bears, and jelly hearts. It is also common to take out your loved one for a romantic dinner, either at home or out to a fancier restaurant. Whether it's a big or small present it is always the thought that counts. --------------------------- Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101!
