Learn Swedish with SwedishPod101! Don't forget to stop by SwedishPod101.com for more great Swedish Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Västerås Västerås is the fifth biggest city in Sweden with a population of 137,207. Västerås is in the Västmanland province and is one of the oldest cities in Sweden. In the year 1990, their 1,000-year anniversary was celebrated. Västerås was called Wester Aros at first and through the years it developed into Västerås. Wester Aros has been said to have been founded in the year 990 and even then Wester Aros was an important trading city in the Viking Age. In the beginning of the 1100s Västerås was Sweden's second biggest city. Västerås was appointed diocese in the 1100s and Västerås Cathedral's construction started. Since then Västerås has been the center for education, trading, and religion in Västmanland. Västerås is also home to Sweden's biggest burial mound, Anundshög. Anundshög is nine meters high and about sixty-four meters in diameter. The mound is dated back to the migration period in the Viking Age. Anundshög consists of twelve burial mounds, five stone ships, ten stone circles, fourteen raised stones, and a rune stone. During medieval times Anundshög was plundered, the stone ships were destroyed, the rune stone was pushed over and the royal goods thought to have been on the scene were cut up. Because of this it is unknown who had been buried there. Today there are a some interesting hotels in Västerås. 1898, plans were started for a principal hotel with a hotel, restaurant, liquor shop, and a party room. It was finished in 1907 and is thought to be one of [...]
