Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Don't forget to stop by DutchPod101.com for more great Dutch Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Wat Zien Ik The Dutch film Wat Zien Ik (translated as What I See!?), also known in English by the titles Diary of a Hooker and Business is Business, is about the lives of two prostitutes who live in Amsterdam's Red Light District. Two books by Albert Mol form the basis for the film, which follows the prostitutes Nel and Greet. The film stars Sylvia de Leur, Ronnie Bierman, Jules Hamel, and Piet Romer. Paul Verhoeven directed the film. Greet assumes a variety of roles at the request of her clients, and the film portrays many of them as part of a somewhat comic examination of sexual identity. With Greet's friend Nel, on the other hand, the film focuses only a few relationships and highlights the exploitative and abusive aspects of her profession. After reading a personal ad in the newspaper, Nel, with the encouragement of her friend Greet, branches out and develops a more conventional relationship with a man named Bob. After she becomes pregnant with Bob's child, the two decide to marry. Greet, however, fails to leave a life of prostitution, even though she too develops a relationship based on romantic love with a man named Piet. The two begin to date in a somewhat conventional fashion, and Piet offers Greet several tokens of genuine affection. In an ironic twist, however, Piet soon finds that his wife is pregnant, and so decides that he must end his affair. Whereas pregnancy offered her friend an escape from the world of prostitution, in Greet's case it affirms her role as a marginal figure in society. When they part, Greet tells Piet that, should his child be born a girl, he shoul [...]

Learn Dutch with DutchPod101! Don't forget to stop by DutchPod101.com for more great Dutch Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Flodder The Dutch comedy Flodder is about a lower class family taking part in a social experiment by moving to an upper class neighborhood. Of course the Flodders aren't able to fit in there, and comedy ensues. Dick Maas directed the film, which stars Rene Van't Hoff, Nelly Frijda, Huub Stapel, and Tatjana Simic. The Flodder family gets the opportunity to move to the upper class neighborhood because it's discovered that their state-owned home actually sits on top of a dump site for toxic waste. A social worker in the community suggests that they move the family to an affluent neighborhood to see if the upper class surroundings would result in positive changes for the dysfunctional family. The family can't fit in, so their neighbors begin a quest to get rid of them. Meanwhile government leaders are looking for another place to move the Flodders because of all the trouble they are causing in the neighborhood, but Johnny, one of the Flodders' sons, announces that he is engaged to the wife of one of their rich neighbors. When the government finally finds another place to move the family, Ma Flodder learns that her grandfather died recently and left her a lot of money. They decide to buy the home they're living in, much to the dismay of their affluent neighbors. An engagement party for their son and his fiancée results in the neighbors having a wonderful but raucous time at the party. Before the end of it though, the husband of their son's fiancée ends up crashing the party by driving a military tank right into their house. In true comedic fashion, the Flodders find this to be hilarious, and the movie ends. --------------------------- Learn Dutch with DutchPod101!
