You spend all afternoon planting tons of flowers and even a small garden. And just in time, too - today, you have your five year old niece to watch. Aan Van Gogh worden meer dan 2000 kunstwerken toegeschreven, waaronder beroemde werken als Sterrennacht en Tuin met zonnebloemen. Toen hij voor het eerst in de wereld stapte, bracht Van Gogh een tijd als missionaris door. Als zoon van een predikant, dacht hij dat hij was voorbestemd voor een religieus leven. Hij faalde echter een toelatingsexamen voor een theologische school en mislukte daarna in een aparte drie maanden durende opleiding in de theologie op een andere school. Niet lang daarna ontdekte hij de kunstwereld, en begon te tekenen. De Nederlandse realistische schilder Anton Mauve, die ook toevallig van Van Gogh's aangetrouwde neef was, introduceerde hem in het schilderen met olie- en waterverf in 1882. De aardappeleters , geschilderd in 1885, wordt door vele deskundigen beschouwd als zijn eerste grote werk. Hetzelfde jaar dat zijn vader stierf. Terwijl Sterrennacht onder de meest bekende werken van Van Gogh telt, deed hij ook een aantal series van schilderijen die gemakkelijk zijn te herkennen. Zijn serie over cipressen is waarschijnlijk het meest gekend. Hij was ook zeer bekend om zijn serie Zonnebloemen en zijn vele andere werken, die bloemenlandschappen weergeven. Er zijn veel aanwijzingen in zijn leven dat Van Gogh leed aan een diepe depressie, en een van de meest bekende incidenten was toen hij zijn oor afsneed. Het gebeurde na een ruzie met zijn vriend, collega-kunstenaar Peter Gauguin. Zijn paranoia had het punt bereikt waar hij dacht dat Gauguin hem zou verlaten, zodat hij hem bedreigde met een scheermes. Van Gogh trok zich daarna terug in een bordeel, waar hij vaak kwam als hij van streek was. Daar sneed hij zijn oor af en liet het achter bij een van de prostituees, met de instructie er goed zorg voor te dragen. Amper twee jaar later schoot Van Gogh zichzelf in de romp en stierf een paar dagen later op de leeftijd van 37 jaar. ----Formal English---- Vincent Van Gogh Dutch Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh is known almost as much for his apparent mental state as he was for his work. Van Gogh is credited with more than two thousand pieces of art, including famous works like "Starry Night" and "Garden with Sunflowers." When he first stepped out into the world, Van Gogh spent time as a missionary. The son of a preacher, he thought he was destined for a life of ministry. However, he failed an entrance exam for one theological school and then failed a separate three-month course in theology at another school. Not long after these failings, he discovered the art world, starting with drawing. Dutch realist painter Anton Mauve, who also happened to be Van Gogh’s cousin-in-law, introduced him to oil and watercolor painting in 1882. "The Potato Eaters," which was painted in 1885, is considered by many experts to be his first major work. It was made in the year his father died. While "Starry Night" may be among Van Gogh’s most well-known works, he also did several series of paintings that are easily recognizable. His "Cypresses" series is probably his most popular one. He was also very well known for his "Sunflowers" series and his many other works that included floral landscapes. There have been many indications from his life that Van Gogh suffered from deep depression, and one of the most well-known incidents was when he cut off his ear.
