 Prototype Lessons #7 - ホウレンソウ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:44

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101! Don't forget to stop by JapanesePod101.com for more great Japanese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- Connect the initial kanji characters of the Japanese words for three kinds of conduct—“reporting" (hou_koku), "making contact" (ren_raku), and "consultation" (sou_dan)—and you get hou_ren_sou, which means the green leafy vegetable “spinach” in Japanese. This is a Japanese play on words, but it is also well known as the most important mental attitude among responsible adults. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the “spinach” concept is hammered home quite thoroughly for newly-hired, young employees all over Japan. To make a long story short, its purpose is to enable smooth workplace communication, but this is easier said than done. Business can be hindered by a lack of smooth communication in the workplace. Customer trust can be lost by frequent mistakes. Business performance may suffer as a result. Poorer performance can ultimately risk the company’s very existence. Therefore, workplace problems such as "I did not know" and "I did not hear” absolutely should be prevented. But, the details of “reporting" (hou_koku), "making contact" (ren_raku), and "consultation" (sou_dan) can be difficult. What details are important, to whom should they be reported, when, and how. This capacity is cultivated only by experience, including a number of failures, and because it is based on a person’s judgment, there is a great variation among individuals. Thus, in today’s workplaces, even though we are not greengrocers, we are continuously chanting "spinach, spinach…spinach (hou_ren_sou)!" --------------------------- Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101!  Prototype Lessons #6 - 18歳選挙権導入 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3:03

Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101! Don't forget to stop by JapanesePod101.com for more great Japanese Language Learning Resources! ----Formal English---- “The Constitution of Japan" was promulgated on November 3rd in 1945, in the year when World War II ended. Based on this constitution which advocated "popular sovereignty" and "respect for basic human rights," "Public Officers Election Act" was newly regulated and "men and women whose ages are 20 and above" were given voting rights. In Japan, Universal Manhood Suffrage Act was in effect in 1925 but it limited voting rights for "men whose ages are 25 and above" and women had no suffrage. Finally, women acquired their suffrage. This increased the number of voters to 50 percents of Japanese population. This rule was maintained for 70 years. However, decreasing voting rates and indifference to politics in younger generations become social problems. In such situation, Japanese government start to consider to "lower the age to acquire voting rights to age 18" as people are given voting rights by the time they become 18 in approximately 90 percents of countries and regions in the world. Moreover, the government was pointed that it made light of policies for child-rearing generations while they have priority on ones for elder people such as care insurance. So the government needed to reflect younger generation's opinion more to policies. In the end, the revised Public Offices Election Law was in effect on June 17th , 2015. This lowers the age to acquire voting rights from "age 20 and above" to "age 18 and above" and allows people to campaign from age 18. The act was revised after 70 years but there are still many problems left such as how to increase interests to politics in younger generations and make them vote in elections. --------------------------- Learn Japanese with JapanesePod101!
