When a driver quits a small carrier they normally take it personally and in many cases will avoid giving out the reference to the next trucking company that is trying to hire you. This is not the case will all small carriers but it is in many cases. Small carriers with under 30 trucks find it hard to be compliant with DOT and again in many cases do not ask professionally. Check out the reputation of any small carrier you are going to work for. Ask them if you can talk to a "former" driver or two of theirs. All about Trucking What to look for Lets start by making sure we are aware of our surroundings. Get in the habit of looking at peoples behaviors. Maybe something as little as an argument or a look on someones face can be asking for help. Watch for someone with their hand on someones arm trying to escort them into a car or even a semi truck. Some people will freeze and might be afraid to yell out. Watch for something that does not fit in. Maybe a house wife being pushed into a car by someone young. Watch for someone motioning for help while sitting in their vehicle or while passing you. Always keep your eye on someone pulled off the side of the road maybe for a bathroom break. Many time often a kidnapper will choose to have their victims pee on the side of the road or in the woods ultimately avoid crowded rest areas or any public bathroom where a victim could potentially get away. Watch for marks on wrist from zip ties or duck tape. As you are walking in truck stops or parking lots listen for sounds in trunks or the cab of a semi truck. Many times a victim is left alone while the perpetrator goes in to the stores for supplies. Also while at home monitors your Childs computers and phones. Recently talkCDL's hosts were victims of an attempted infiltration of a possible pervert. Their 11 year old child was the targeted on instagram while she was on a private page for children only. Ladies watch yourself when leaving a store at night. Always try and park in a well lit area. Watch as you approach your vehicle that there is no one hanging around or that no one is visibly in the next vehicle that can reach out and grab you. Open the passenger door and enter you vehicle from that code instead if that is the safest entry. All about Trucking Truck Speed Trucking History. Yesterdays Truckers. Truckers not only had a rough ride but they also had very slow trucks. Trucks topped out at a whopping 15mph. Yes I did say that! For every 10 hours you drove you covered 150 miles and thats if you were able to keep your foot in it. I don't think cruise control had been invented yet so they also had to keep their foot in it the entire time. If you do the math, back then a trip from California to Philadelphia PA is roughly 2700 miles. At 15mph that would be 180 hours and of course if your truck does 15mph you might actually average maybe 10 mph with stopping and going so the trip would take approximately 6 weeks for the one way trip. Detention pay issues are gaining ground and you can help by voicing your concerns on the link provided above. 18 to 20 year old OTR drivers Should a person under 21 years of age be able to drive over the road? This is another hot topic that is moving forward in trucking. For many years a person could get a CDL if they were at least 18 to 20 years old. But they could not cross they state lines. Does this man sense> Think about this, a driver that is 18 years old could be licensed in the state of Texas. He could pick up a load in El Paso and take it all the way to the Louisiana/Texas state line but could not lawfully take the load to say Shreveport a few miles across the line to deliver it. Thats right he could drive about 900 miles one way but could not drive another 20. Another example to compare is a driver in New Jersey could pick up in Edison and drive 70 miles to the PA State line but can not drive into Easton PA? Think about how crazy that sounds, the Texas driver can drive 900 miles one way but the New Jersey driver is limited to 70 miles one way, thats just plain nuts. We talked about everything from bee haulers to bringing back respect in the trucking industry. The bandits are on a mission to better the trucking industry by helping educate those that have not learned about respect. One driver at a time they induct them into the LHB or the Long Haul Bandits Trucker Club. Entrance is not just a signature and you're in. The gate keepers are Sancho and Grump, the Prez and VP. They take the Bandits very serious and they are on guard. If you want to be in the club there are a few things you will have to do and have. The have of course if the "desire". You must really want to be a part of this growing group of truck drivers that want to do things the right way and make the brotherhood of trucking a thing of respect. All about Trucking Trucker killed while walking at a truck stop A truck driver was recently killed at a truck stop while walking. The driver of a semi truck from Canada is in trouble after dash cam video was brought forth as evidence. Walking inside truck stop parking lots are very dangerous. More so than most realize. Not paying attention can get you hurt or killed. In this day and age many people are seen walking and texting. I am hearing this is not the case as the reports say there was a good distance between the driver and the walker which mean he should have seen him. Many times often we find ourselves adjusting as we are pulling out to start our drive. We find ourselves reaching for perhaps a drink or something we left down on the floor. My advice would be always take a breath and you time situating yourself once you have sat in the drivers seat. Make sure you have put everything in its proper place. Make sure of anything you are going to be needing or using as you are driving. In the first couple minutes of our drive it is very easy to get distracted as your mind is at ease with such a knew speed compared to the highways. Truck stops have little surprises around every corner. Drivers sometimes just appear from no where as they emerge from between to parked rigs.
