 CHP006: The Best Candidate I Ever Interviewed | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:20

The Best Candidate I Ever Interviewed. What I learned from conducting over 100 interviews. Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today’s episode we’ll answer a question from Claire in Ottawa who asks: Hey Ross, I’m interested to hear about the best candidate you’ve ever interviewed for a job and what made them so great? What can I learn from their success? To summarize and reiterate, this candidate immediately showed up with energy, charisma, a firm handshake, and a smile. They started sending positive vibes from the get-go. They then took this a step further and showed how organized they were. They were impressive with the tailored content that they had for the job specifically that I was hiring for and weren't just saying, “I'm a person interested in any job you can offer me.” I'm interested and here are specific reasons why you should hire me. Here are reasons why my experience relates to the job that you're trying to hire for. That makes it easier for me the recruiter. When I'm spending all day talking to candidates and trying to make quick decisions on whether or not each candidate is somebody that could be a potential for an interview in a few days. The candidate was engaging in relatable. If I think about people that I want on my team, I want somebody who takes initiative, who does things without being asked to, and somebody who goes above and beyond. This candidate did just that before they ever spoke to me. They left me feeling like I wanted them working on my team and that is something you should be shooting for as well at a hiring fair or when you go to an interview.  CHP005: How to Choose Between Online Learning Options | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:04

How to Choose Between Online Learning Options. Is a coding bootcamp, university degree, or online course the right option for you? Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM| iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. In today's episode, we're going to talk through a topic that we cover quite a bit in one-on-one coaching sessions on WehnerEd- how to choose between online learning options; a four-year software degree, a coding boot camp, some of the online courses that are available such as Udemy, Udacity, Lynda, EdX, Treehouse, and others or even doing a self-taught class (YouTube videos, books or other resources on the internet). What are the pros and cons of some of those options and how do you determine which of those opportunities is the right direction for you to pursue your education. A benefit of learning to code through either four-year institution or through a boot camp are that those organizations generally provide career support as well. So that can be relationships that they maintain with companies that can hire you directly after completing the curriculum or even preparation for updating a resume or ahead of a technical interview. In many cases, a boot camp online learning option is going to best prepare you for a job in the real world. Boot camps not only have the lecture and homework side of things, but they have relevant projects that are based on industry examples. That are created specifically so that you run into roadblocks. Those options require the most time commitment. They’re generally full time. if you want to go to a four-year institution, if you want to a boot camp that's going to be your day job and you're having to pay for the privilege and so that may be accessible for a lot of folks out there. But a boot camp is certainly the fastest way to get you in that direction. On the other side you have online courses. Those are far more affordableonline learning options. They lack some of the same structure and some of the same accountability. But they do generally have good solid assignments, they have projects that are relevant and help you intentionally run into challenges that will help you become more resourceful and become a better programmer. They have less instructor support and so as you get stuck you may spend a lot more time on forums, reaching out to folks on the web to try to help you get past a roadblock that you're facing. But again that's good for you. That’s something that you'll face when you are programming full time and so it's worthwhile in my opinion to do those things during the learning process.

CHP002: Which jobs are most in demand today? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:50

Which jobs are most in demand today? Many jobs today have more open positions than there are qualified people to fill them. Learn how you can take advantage of the many opportunities, and how WehnerEd can help you vastly improve your career even while other jobs disappear to automation. Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Please subscribe, rate, and review. Welcome back to the Career Hacking podcast! The question we’re answering today is which jobs are most in demand today? As mentioned in the first episode, WehnerEd focuses on (digital skills and careers) as technology continues to overtake each industry. Regardless of where your passions reside and which industry you work in, a digital skillset will create new opportunities for you and will likely boost your salary while increasing your work flexibility. To stay relevant and attract new customers it’s a must for companies to manage a website, apps, digital marketing presence and increasing numbers are utilizing AI and smart algorithms to optimize products   internal decision making. Any roles that help to build a company’s online presence, integrate technology into their products, or leverage data to optimize and grow profits are going to be the jobs with the most growth over the coming decade. Grocery stores use AI to send me personalized coupons and boost their sales. Sports teams are tracking player performance on the field to build optimal performance. Fashion and music industries are using code to analyze historical trends data to minimize risks and nearly guarantee hits with their audiences. So then, it makes sense that the most in-demand jobs right now are the ones that help these companies complete their digital re-inventions. These roles include web developers, mobile app developers that create software for android and iOS devices, software engineers, digital marketers, Data Analysts, Data Scientists, and artificial intelligence.  Now you know which jobs are most in demand today. So you might be thinking to yourself- great… Ross. I get that digital careers are growing faster than ever, but without any semblance of relevant experience nor a background in mathematics or engineering, how realistic is it really that I could get a role in one of these fields? The truth is that getting a job in a digital field isn't as far away as you may think. Today's online education courses provide significant improvements over the traditional education that you're accustomed to… where you're sitting in a classroom with a large group and a single instructor. Affordable classes are available that can work around your schedule while also providing assignments that can train you in the skills needed for these highly saught after jobs in only a matter of months. College degrees are no longer absolute requirements for technical jobs and instead… the hiring process places more emphasis on a candidate’s experience with a given skill set more so than the name on their diploma. By mastering the skills you learn in online courses through hobbies and projects on your own…. or freelancing gigs you complete for your own customers… you can learn the jobs that seem so inaccessible to you today.
