CHP020: Nate Swanner discusses Tech Jobs, Artificial Intelligence, and Working Remotely | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 30:14

Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio Nate Swanner is a writer, editor, and developer. He has written for publications like SlashGear, The Next Web, and is currently an Editor for Dice…a recruitment engine that connects top tech talent with job opportunities around the world. Nate has published articles on imposter syndrome for those new to tech, working remotely, challenges faced by bootcamp grads, recruitment, and self-employment. Before Nate and I met one another, I was already very impressed with his content….I knew that it would be very helpful for our listeners and followers,  and was actively sharing much of it on the WehnerEd Twitter and Facebook feeds. In today's episode, Nate answers questions such as: How would you say tech is changing? Just because a job is in tech, that doesn’t mean that it has to be a hip startup in Silicon Valley full of millennials. Can you share about the other side of tech that’s maybe more approachable for someone not in their 20’s, or a little more seasoned in their career? How should someone new to tech dip their toe in the water or get started? What are the advantages of working in tech vs. other more-traditional fields? Will you please share a bit about Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your own words, and how it may be a more-attainable career option than most think? How attainable or realistic is it for someone with a non-tech background to learn and work professionally in AI? Can someone work self-employed in AI or do they have to work for someone else? Let’s assume everyone out there listening is totally on board with what you’re sharing and find a job with a company they’d love to work for… but it’s thousands of miles away. How have you seen people land remote jobs? Is it any different than applying to something more traditional? How can our listeners overcome imposter syndrome? How should job applicants prepare for technical interviews? Links + Show Notes: Nate's Articles on Dice Twitter @NateSwanner

How The Skills Gap in Tech Benefits You – Career Hacking Podcast Episode 19 Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM | iHeart Radio | YouTube Please subscribe, rate, and review the Career Hacking Podcast. There is a massive skills gap in tech! Meaning, there are more job postings for certain jobs in tech than qualified people to fill them. This is a huge opportunity for individuals to level up their careers with only 6-12 months of training online. Let's make it happen! In today’s episode, I would like to share a topic with you that has come up quite a bit in recent conversations.  What would I recommend to individuals to help them prepare for the next stock market correction? What should people be doing today to help weather a similar market slide as 2008?   Market corrections periodically happen every so often regardless of what's happening in the world, and it’s smart to start sharpening your pencil and developing the abilities today that will help you avoid being laid off, or at least make finding a new job much easier. Let’s take a moment to learn from history. Even those that were well positioned and comfortable in their roles struggled to find work during the recession. Maybe that was you, or maybe you’re counting on your current experiences to help you weather the next storm. Knowing

Started over 4 years ago, Marco and his co-founder Ken taught hundreds of students at places like Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, Babson University, Brown University, AND Rhode Island School of Design through in-person classes before they even thought about applying their understanding of how people learn complex technical concepts to their online education platform.  CHP016: How To Get Hired With An Online Portfolio | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 10:12

How To Get Hired With An Online Portfolio Listen and subscribe on iTunes | Stitcher | Google Play | PlayerFM| iHeart Radio | YouTube In today’s episode, we’ll answer a question from Kenzie in Memphis who writes: You’ve mentioned creating an online portfolio as a way to stand out from the crowd several times on your podcast. Will you please share some specifics about how I can create such a site as an aspiring UX designer…  and what content I should be publishing to show off my experience? First off, you should know that applying online to hundreds of jobs that you are only kind of interested in, hoping that just one of them responds back with an interview, isNOTa good use of your time. Not only are you setting yourself up for the silent treatment, you’re also selling yourself short. In today’s day and age, resumes are a bland way to advertise yourself while an online presence is an accessible method truly sharing your brand in full color. An online portfolio website is your best way to go above and beyond for a hiring manager and your ace in the hole to show off your work to get the tech job you most desire. Your site should clearly communicate your relevant work experience(s) and must provide a call to action for your site visitors to reach out and hire you. The site allows you to display similar information as a resume in a much more appealing format, and also allows you to demonstrate the unique value you have to offer. In last week’s podcast, Data Scientist Fernando Hidalgo, he found a company that he wanted to work for, identified a specific opportunity for how he could help them improve their business, and outlined details about how he solved a similar problem using publicly available data. Essentially saying, “you’re settling for less than you should be, and I’m the solution to help you achieve more.
