They determined that if a viewer watched at least 70% of the movie—a data point that the streaming service is able to calculate—but then turned it off, it was because it was too horrifying to watch. But couldn’t they also turn off the movie just because they didn’t care for it at all? According to Netflix, if people truly dislike a movie, they would turn it off well before they get to the 70% threshold.   Carbon Fiber Artificial Muscles Can Lift 12,000 Times Their Weight Today, most robots and machines that need to move around use motors to do it.  Episode 070 "A CPU, A Quiz show, and A Quiet Place" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:03:45

Don’t worry tech fans, even though we start with a bit of some football news we quickly get back to tech with news from AMD and Amazon, a record holder gets removed, Sega announces an official retro reboot, and The Meg hits YouTube! All this PLUS a rapid fire quiz show, a great new segment called “I Just Reddit”, and a very Quiet Weekly Garnish! ----more---- Another new football league is coming … and it’s launching next year! The XFL won’t be the only new professional football league set to launch over the next couple of years.  The Alliance of American Football was unveiled at a press conference in New York. This new league has an official debut date (Feb. 9, 2019) and a TV partner (CBS Sports Network).  “I think this will be complementary to the NFL,” said former Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who will serve as the AAF’s head of player relations.   AMD unveils its second-generation Ryzen CPUs With last year's Ryzen processors, AMD made a grand re-entry into the world of high-performance desktop computing. Now its improving on those designs with its second-generation Ryzen chips, which are a bit faster and more efficient. The big takeaway this year: AMD is in an even better place to compete with Intel.   Alexa is beating the crap out of Siri! Surprise, surprise, turns out Apple’s debut foray into the world of voice assistant-enabled speakers isn’t quite living up to the company’s initial expectations. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is slashing the number of monthly HomePod orders from 500,000 to 200,000 due to some disappointing sales. Apple retail store workers cited in the Bloomberg story claim to be selling “fewer than 10 HomePods a day.” Apple’s no stranger to lackluster sales when it comes to new products, but the HomePod seems to be fighting a war on multiple fronts, and doing poorly in each one.   Twin Galaxies Removes Former Donkey Kong Champ Billy Mitchell's High Scores Controversial arcade game player Billy Mitchell’s record scores have been removed from the Twin Galaxies leaderboards following a dispute earlier this year that many were performed using an arcade emulator. The ruling, which comes after a lengthy arbitration process, also bans Mitchell from further participation on the leaderboards, bringing an end to the King of Kong star’s high-score glory. All of Mitchell’s records on Twin Galaxies, an organization that tracks video game records and high scores, have been scrubbed. These marks included a 1,062,800-point score for the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong, as well as scores set between 2005 and 2007.   Sega announces the Mega Drive Mini Sega is getting in on the nostalgic, miniature console trend. The company also announced that it would be bringing a number of classic games to the Nintendo Switch this summer.  Sega says that the tentatively-named Mega Drive Mini is being released in conjunction with the console’s 30th anniversary, and that it will carry a number of classic games. The company has dabbled with retro hardware before: it has licensed its name to hardware company AtGames (which has also done retro Atari consoles) to produce Genesis clones, including the Sega Genesis Flashback that Polygon wasn’t a huge fan of. On Facebook, AtGames revealed that the forthcoming Mega Drive Mini will be powered by its hardware.   GEEK OFF Live life as a character in skyrim or fallout?   The Meg Trailer Has Dropped   What if megalodon sharks still lived in the deep of the sea?   I Just Reddit (by Adam) I just read a discussion titled “What's the funniest name you've heard someone call an object when they couldn't remember its actual name?”   Weekly Garnish: A Quiet Place John Krasinski hits a home run with this new thriller that also stars his real life wife, Emily Blunt, as his on screen wife.  Episode 069 "Indiana Joan and the Stranger Things" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:06

On this episode of digitalSoup, the guys discuss some issues the Duffer brothers are having with Stranger Things, Jason’s new wrist rocket, and the future of Indiana Jones.  ----more---- Amazon Kindle Fire devices now have hands free Alexa voice services. A no brainer by Amazon to further unlock the usefulness of their tablet line up.   Chrono Trigger’s PC port is getting the original SNES graphics back Square Enix says that three patches are coming to fix the Steam version’s problems.  Chrono Trigger’s surprise release on Steam in February was great news for fans of the classic role-playing game, right up until the point they saw what Square Enix had actually released. The Windows PC version of Chrono Trigger wasn’t a faithful recreation of the SNES original, but a poorly received port of one of the company’s mobile releases.   Duffer Brothers Accused Of Lifting ‘Stranger Things’ From 2012 Short Film Charlie Kessler, who directed the short film Montauk that debuted at the 2012 Hamptons International Film Festival, filed a lawsuit Tuesday (read it here) in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming he pitched the Montauk concept to Matt and Ross Duffer in April 2014 at a Tribeca Film Festival party and later presented “the script, ideas, story and film” to the duo that they allegedly used to develop their hit series.   Jason got a new toy … ask him what it is!   Spotify valued at nearly $30 billion in unusual Wall Street debut Spotify opened at $165.90 a share on the New York Stock Exchange Tuesday. The stock later fell below $150 a share. Its Wall Street debut has been closely followed in recent weeks as much for the unconventional approach to a public offering it chose as for the company itself. Unlike traditional IPOs, Spotify did not raise new capital. Instead it simply listed existing shares directly on the stock exchange without relying on underwriters to attract investors, set a price and stabilize the stock as it begins trading. GEEK OFF Favorite Indiana Jones movie and favorite character in that movie besides Indy himself?   Indiana Jones or Indiana Joan?   Steven Spielberg has recently mentioned that if the franchise is to continue after Harrison Ford's final run as Indy, that he would want a woman to take on the iconic role. Of course nothing ever goes smoothly in Jurassic Park and the creators are anticipating all the hijinks sim park owners are going to set loose on the guests!   GEEK OFF Best 90’s rock album, why?   March is a bad month for movies, right? Traditionally March has been known as a slow month in the movie world. Sitting between the big winter holiday season and the summer blockbuster season, most studios use March as a dumping ground for the movies they don’t expect much from. But maybe March is getting slammed for no reason, check out this list of movies that all came out in March over on the Ranker website. April is shaping up to be a pretty big movie month From Avengers : Infinity War to Rampage and even Super Troopers 2, this month should be a pretty busy one for movie fans.   Weekly Garnish:     Nintendo Gameboy Classic Alarm Clock Fans of the original Nintendo Gameboy can now get an awesome alarm clock for the bedroom. More Than 150 Android Apps Tried to Infect Phones with Windows Malware Security researchers with Zscaler detected the first infected app several days ago, but then more than 150 more with the same signature popped up upon further investigation. As it happens, these apps are carrying the same malicious Windows payload discovered in Android apps last year. This likely isn’t an example of bumbling malware creators loading the wrong code. Rather, the developers were using machines infected by a now-defunct botnet called Ramnit. Jason’s Hackintosh 2018 After being discouraged with Apple for not releasing a new Mac mini Jason decided to go the Hackintosh route and build his first one last year.  He now has created a more powerful Hackintosh and decided to share with the listeners his build. Here are a couple great resources he used for his project: www.tonymacx86.com and www.insanelymac.com GEEK OFF Mario vs Sonic Spike Lee Eyes ‘Nightwatch’ Superhero Movie at Sony Spike Lee may direct a movie for Sony Pictures based on the Marvel character Nightwatch.  A source told Variety that Lee’s involvement is in the early stages, but he could potentially helm a film from a script by “Luke Cage” show runner Cheo Hodari Coker. The studio and Lee’s rep declined to comment. The site That Hashtag Show first reported the news.  Episode 064 "Getting Social On The Moon" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:32

It’s all about social media changes this week as Twitter adds new features, Vero goes True Social and there may soon be 4G coverage on the moon! Plus Streaming services may be in trouble and Jason time travels to 2013! ----more---- Twitter finally added it’s most requested feature As a Twitter user it’s long been frustrating that there wasn’t an easy way to save a tweet/link for later reading from within the app. That wait appears to be over as Twitter is rolling out a new feature called Bookmarks. It will finally allow you to save those interesting tweets/links for later consumption in an efficient in app manner. No more trying to direct message yourself the links you wanted to save!   Are Streaming Music Services About To Go Extinct? These may be golden years for streaming digital music, so enjoy it while it lasts.  Hundreds of millions of listeners have made the leap to streaming, abandoning CDs and downloads for free and monthly subscription services like Pandora, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music and Amazon Prime Music. But the business has been treacherous, at least when it comes to turning a profit. The latest reminder: Spotify's filing for U.S. shares, which detailed how big payouts to music labels have made it tough to turn its 71 million subscribers into a profitable concern. Late last week, Internet radio station iHeartRadio moved closer to bankruptcy, according to two reports.   Vero - True Social App Everyone seems to be jumping onboard this new social media app that is claiming to be the answer to the frustration with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter algorithms. It’s still in Beta stage, so bugs are a normal occurence, but there is now some speculation regarding the security of the app causing concern among many early adopters.   4G cellular coverage on the moon While many people across the world that live in rural areas don’t have cell access at home, Space X and Vodaphone plan to take the first steps towards installing 4G cellular networks on the surface of the moon.   It’s 2013 for Jason! No he didn’t travel back in time to stop his future killer, Jason finally upgraded his Playstation 3 to a 4!  Why now? (Discussion)  Also, he just ordered a 4K television but only got a regular PS4 … is he stupid!   GEEK OFFSega Genesis vs Super NintendoWe almost lost Silent Bob If you hadn’t already heard, filmmaker Kevin Smith suffered a massive heartattack after a live show and was rushed to the hospital. Turns out he had 100% blockage of ‘The Widowmaker’ artery and emergency surgery was done. Thankfully it seems a full recovery is expected and he thanked his fans and Chris Pratt in an video you can see here.     Weekly Garnish: Art of Mondo Indie Wire Art of Mondo Gallery   Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Listen on Google Play Music Listen on TuneIn Subscribe on Stitcher   Be sure to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts and leave a review, lets us know what you think.  You can reach us at the digitalSoup podcast website, Facebook or on Twitter @thedigitalsoup.  We are also on Instagram so follow us for extra bonus material and show highlights! A thermal camera, indoor air quality sensors and even laser-assisted distance measurement system. The phone is actually built by a company called Bullitt Group and branded with the Caterpillar name. In other news, Land Rover also has their own line of super rugged phones made to withstand the elements.  The Land Rover phone is also built by Bullitt.   Spotify Now Hiring We’ve mentioned it in the past, but it appears that Spotify is getting closer to jumping into the physical product game. A job posting by Spotify looking for an Ops Manager for a “hardware product” along with the line “Spotify is on its way to creating its first physical products” have all signs pointing to the jump. Watch out Apple, your white ring maker may have some more competition soon.   10,000 Year Clock Amazon founder Jeff Bezos announced the construction has begun for a massive 10,000 year clock on his property in Texas. This clock will have a hand that ticks once per year, a hand that ticks once per century and best yet, a cuckoo will emerge once a millenium. The idea is to get people thinking about time differently, much the same as how viewing photos of the Earth from space changed thinking about the environment.   'Walking Dead' Star Lauren Cohan, Without Season 9 Contract, Books Lead in ABC Pilot The actress, who has been battling AMC over her season nine salary, will star opposite Scott Foley in 'Whiskey Cavalier.'  Lauren Cohan is eyeing her departure from The Walking Dead. She has starred as Maggie since season two of the AMC zombie drama and has now booked a lead role in ABC drama pilot Whiskey Cavalier.Norman Reedus Photography Interview   “CORAL” wants the big screen Imagine a world where Carl from The Walking Dead (actor Chandler Riggs) was Peter Parker/Spider-Man or Han Solo.   Solo: A Star Wars Story gets Sabotaged In an excellent mashup, the teaser trailers for Solo were re-cut and set to the popular Beastie Boys song, Sabotage.
