The PlayStation 4 maker had been blocking cross-play and progression between Fortnite on PS4 and Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in recent months. The move angered Fortnite fans who couldn’t access progress, skins, and purchases on an Xbox One or Nintendo Switch if they’d played on a PS4. Sony now says it is enabling cross-play for Fortnite fans. Have We Finally Figured Out The Secret Behind Near Death Experiences? As Iger stated, “there shouldn’t be two Marvel’s”. (Discussion points- What would we like to see from the Star Wars Universe moving forward? What stories do we want more of or less of? This week the guys discuss the latest Apple offerings, the Switch and NES classic titles, then have a listener-submitted battle between a Ninja Beaver and a Karate Monkey! ----more---- Apple Event News and Discussions - New Phones, New Watch, Same Story? From multiple new phones to an FDA approved update to the series 4 Apple watch, there were a lot of big announcements at the 2018 Apple iPhone event, but is it just the same story? Also check out what this "Heart Doctor" has to say about the Apple Watch! Apple dissing movie owners? Apple is apparently helping keep the idea of owning physical media alive as it’s recently been deleting movies that people have purchased from their iTunes accounts and then offering a rental voucher in return. Apple claims iTunes is just a storefront and this is not their fault, but the blame is on the movie studios no longer making the movies available. So in short, when you BUY a movie via iTunes, it turns out you don’t actually own it at all. Nintendo Switch Finally Goes Online and Includes NES Classic Titles and Wireless NES controllers! Jason was hard on Nintendo for shutting down ROM sites that were keeping classic gaming alive, maybe this is why. With the announced pricing and launch date of the online service for the Switch, Nintendo also announced their back catalog of NES Classics and wireless NES controllers to play them on the Switch.  Weekly Garnish 004 - “Shattering fluid, Cosmic Radio bursts, and Trebek shakes things up!” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 08:33

From fluid that shatters like a solid, AI contacting cosmic beings, and more WOW from Owen Wilson than you can imagine to a great option for learning a new language, Adam brings us a jam packed Weekly Garnish to kick off your weekend! ----more---- Fluid that shatters instead of splatters when hit with a bat? That’s the curiosity that is non-newtonian fluid. I’m not a scientist but think of it this way. Fluids like water, that coffee you’re drinking, or maybe it’s later on a Friday and you’re enjoying a cold beer to kick off your weekend, those are all known as Newtonian fluids. Meaning they have a constant flow and viscosity, they take the shape of whatever container they are in. Non-newtonian fluids don’t play by the same rules, however. Think of things like silly putty or Oobleck, that fun mixture of cornflour and water. The more you apply pressure or stress to it, the more it acts like a solid. Here’s a great scientific explanation if you want to know more.  But if you go check out this article on The Nerdist, you can see the strange way that these non-newtonian fluids react when being smacked with a baseball bat...in glorious slow motion!   Hello….is there anybody out there? With the help of AI, radio astronomers are analyzing more than 400 terabytes of data and are finding some interesting results. From more than 3 billion light years away from earth they have detected some fast radio bursts, or cosmic radio bursts. They are still a mystery, the exact location is unknown, but they are there nonetheless. Could it be that skynet gives us the key to not only the terminators, but the ability to communicate with the Predator and Xenomorphs?   Gaming is still rising in popularity! Based on a recent article in Variety, nearly 70% of Americans or roughly 211 million people, play video games. No surprise here, digitalSoup is your geek headquarters after all! The big surprise is HOW they are playing them. For most, if you ask them to describe playing video games the first answer will likely be XBox/PS4/Switch. You’d think console gaming was the most common form of gaming...and you’d be wrong. Try the THIRD most popular form of gaming. Based on the study done by  Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, 90% of people play games on their smartphone/tablet mobile devices. Coming in second is PC gamers at 52% and consoles at just 43% of the market. I still have a hard time calling my time playing Marvel Puzzle Quest as I fall asleep at night, gaming. Wow! If you’ve listened to our show, you’ll likely have heard the occasional Owen Wilson impersonation by our very own Adam, a simple but totally effective statement. Wow! That’s right, we all know Owen Wilson loves to say Wow, but check out this video of Every Owen Wilson Wow from his films! https://youtu.be/dn5Tattkj_E Sign Me Up for the Moon! In February of 2017, SpaceX announced they were planning to send two people to the Moon.  I’m not either of them, but what an exciting sounding trip! While there aren’t any details available yet, they have officially signed up their first passenger to fly in their BFR (Big Falcon Rocket) This ship is being designed to transport passengers to the moon and even Mars.  On Monday, the 17th, SpaceX plans to announce who is going, and why. Suck it, Trebek! Everyone’s favorite game show host, Alex Trebek, has debuted a big change on the 35th anniversary season of his show Jeopardy! While he used to be known for his killer ‘stache, he’s been clean shaven for a number of years...until now! He kicked off the 35th season rocking a silver fox, borderline Sean Connery style beard and fans on the internet are losing their minds. We only wish Connery could weigh in on it with Turd Ferguson. Want to learn a new language? Try Duolingo!  Episode 091 "Streaming Music, Turtle Fights, and RIP Burt Reynolds" | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:07:21

This week on digitalSoup, the guys remember Burt Reynolds, then talk a lot about music streaming before an epic fight between a laughing turtle in a hot air balloon and a mad scientist that can turn to steel with butter hands.  This is crazy. ----more---- It's The End Of The PS2 (As We Know It) For those still owning PlayStation 2s, Sony is set to put an end to its repair support for its second-generation console. According to reports, the PlayStation Clinic in Japan’s Iwate Prefecture that handles all of Sony’s gaming station repairs will no longer repair any PS2s after September 7. Spotify and the Music Industry see tension grow As deadlines loom for upcoming contract talks with all three major record labels, Spotify and the Music Industry seem to be on very shaky ground. Even though there has been growth in the music sector in recent years, the music industry claims services like Spotify are only popular because of the music, while Spotify claims it’s their attempts to innovate and make music more accessible that have had the impact. How Do You Consume Music in 2018? The three hosts have a discussion on how and where they listen to music.  Weekly Garnish 003 - “Geralt, the last son of Krypton?” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:04

Can killer drones save the world? Is Superman now a Monster Hunter? Polygon makes big changes and I've got a tip on a fantastic fitness app to help you get back in shape, the best part is that it's absolutely free! All this and more in this edition of The Weekly Garnish! ----more---- Killer drones to save...the world? Well, save the Great Barrier reef at least, which may save the world. Seems like a specific type of starfish, the Crown of Thornes starfish, is rapidly feeding on and destroying the reef. So scientists have developed autonomous underwater drones that hunt out the starfish, inject them with a toxin and kill them. Let’s hope you aren’t in the water when skynet takes over and decides to do the same with people!   Henry Cavill to play Geralt in the Netflix Witcher series We’ve talked about the rumors before, but not it seems official that Henry Cavill will indeed be playing Geralt in the new Witcher series.   Googly eyed fish look fresher? A fish market in Kuwait has been shut down for using stick on googly eyes on their fish in an attempt to make it look fresher. The thing is, would a fish with googly eyes on your market rack make you think it was appetizing?   There’s no place like home. After having been stolen 13 years ago from the Judy Garland Museum here in Grand Rapids, MN, the missing pair of Judy Garland’s Ruby Slippers have turned up. Yes, these are the slippers Dorothy clicks her heels in to return home to Kansas in the classic Wizard of Oz movie. While we have no official word on where they’ve been, word is that they were found in a farmers field on the feet of a scarecrow, where they’d been the whole time... Polygon eliminates scores in their reviews In an effort to make their reviews match the modern gamer, Polygon is scrapping review scores in favor of criticism and curation. Hopefully they’ve figured out a way to maintain a consistent thread through the reviews, but most importantly I think it’s a great move as long as readers can remember that the reviews are just the opinion of the reviewer. They moved to a list of “Polygon Recommends” games, at least they didn’t steal the Souper Reviews model of Serve it up / Feed it to the dogs!   Best fitness app, for free? Look, we geeks get a bad reputation for being overweight and out of shape.  Weekly Garnish 002 - “Can you boost your productivity by being lazy?” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 11:13

Pull up a chair! We've got stories from Disney and their streaming service, why being lazy might boost your productivity, a new Amazon series, John Wick is fighting on horseback, and so much more!  ----more---- Disney streaming service news While Disney looks to compete with Netflix they give their new service a name finally, Disney Play. They do have a great library of big name properties to choose from, think Marvel, Star Wars, etc. , but seems they realize they just don’t have the ability to compete with the volume of Netflix so...they’re going to undercut them in price.   Want to boost your productivity, get lazy. According to a recent TIME article, being lazy can boost not only your productivity but your creativity as well. Science backs this up in fact because being lazy and allowing yourself to be bored let’s your mind rest, which helps you to plan better and allows your mind to wander enough to let new ideas pop up. So put your feet up and when your boss yells at you, link them this article and tell them you’re just getting into ultra productivity mode.   New photos from Amazon’s “The Romanoffs” released The creator of the hit series Mad Men has a new show being released on Amazon and it looks pretty cool. It’s a bit of an anthology type of series that will contain 8 separate episodes following a different cast in each that all think they are descendants of the Russian royal family. With some big names on board and what appears to be that beautiful cinematic look from Mad Men this is a series you’ll want to keep an eye on.   Cyberpunk 2077 gets a massive gameplay trailer We discussed this game from CD Projekt Red back in our big E3 coverage Episode #79 and now we have a massive gameplay trailer, to the tune of 48 minutes! While the developers say that game isn’t finished yet and this is just an early version it’s looking pretty awesome. Put your feet up and give it a watch if you are interested in this game.   John Wick on a horse? No this isn’t a game of SuperFight, it’s some new images and video that is presumed to be from the upcoming John Wick 3 film. Let’s just say it looks pretty crazy, and we mean that in the best way possible. I mean the fact he’s fighting on horseback with a pistol to a motorcyclists head is just insane!   You thought you had it rough? A rare medical condition called hematidrosis is causing an 11 year old girl from Vietnam to sweat blood and apparently there isn’t much doctors can do to treat the condition as not much is actually known about why this happens.   Tired of standard emoji’s and stickers? Try this! Google has updated their virtual keyboard known as Gboard to version 7.5 and that brings the ability to take a selfie and have the software turn it into a variety of different stickers and emoji’s. While this is similar to things like Bitmoji or Apple’s Memoji, the difference here is that it’s using machine learning to create hundreds of stickers based on your selfie.  Episode 089 "Adobe Hacking, Microsoft Subscribing and Netflix Ad Opting out!" | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:00:05

This week, the guys talk Commodore 64 Mini, a rare Photoshop exploit, and Lenovo’s latest entries into the lower cost tablet market.  Then it’s Usually Dave vs Adam as they argue who would win - a diving helmet wearing, fire-breathing meatloaf or 50 duck-sized glass horses with nunchucks.  Stick around! ----more---- Correction: The C64 Mini will officially be arriving October 9th in the USA Last week Jason broke the news to his co-hosts that the C64 Mini was already released, he failed to mention that was in the UK a few months ago. But this October gamers in the US will be able to get their hands on this hardware without importing. Photoshop Users, Update now to avoid getting hacked. Ugh, just when it seems like there couldn’t possibly be yet another way for hackers to get into your machine. Turns out Photoshop has a vulnerability issue via it’s CC programs and while Photoshop isn’t typically a target for hackers, it’s a big vulnerability. The good news is that Adobe has released updates to fix the issue, you just need to update now. Lenovo is betting their tablet will still be successful in a declining market. What do we know about Lenovo tablets? These offerings look pretty decent for the price, great mix of performance/budget, but are tablets still necessary in today’s world? What does the future of the tablet market look like with bigger phones now beginning to dominate? More Microsoft Subscription News! This time for the XBox?! Timing is everything and just after the big Windows Subscription fiasco it appears that Microsoft is looking to sell you bundle that will include an XBox One console, XBox Live and GamePass all for a single monthly subscription. It appears you’ll still be able to purchase consoles separately as you do now however this is a great way to get an XBox into more peoples hands...kind of like how we used to rent systems from Blockbuster but you actually get to keep this! Don't want to see those "ads" in Netflix? Then opt out my brother! With Netflix open in a browser (you can't do this in the apps), tap the tribar options button in the top left (on mobile) or click your profile picture in the top right (on a computer) and then choose Account. On the Account page, scroll down to the Settings section and select Test Participation. You will see a single toggle switch for Include Me In Tests and Previews. Toggle it Off and then click or tap Done.  Weekly Garnish 001 - “Verizon throttling, Apple revives, and did someone say free beer?” | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:21

Buckle up for the all new Weekly Garnish as we talk about Verizon throttling the California Fire Department, Apple reviving ghosts of computing past, a way to score some free beer, and a guy named Paul Flart going viral by farting...then getting fired!  ----more---- Can you hear me now? Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during California Wildfire and forced them to upgrade to a larger data plan. Verizon issued a statement saying it shouldn’t have happened and it was a customer service issue they are looking into, but it’s not the first time this throttling has happened.   Apple bringing back two forgotten favorites? According to a recent Bloomberg.com article, Apple is reportedly reviving two of its forgotten products, the MacMini and the Macbook Air. I know one guy who’ll be excited by at least one of those!   Googles convoluted location tracking policies have them facing a class action lawsuit that could change everything! While the issue with Google continuing to track users even after services were turned off is a big one, steps are being taken in a class action lawsuit that, if approved could see huge monetary penalties and even a loss of business license in California.   Fire up Instagram, it’s time to read that novel! New York Public Library has plans to use Instagram Stories to encourage young readers to read more. It is limited to just one book – Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with plans for two more in the coming months, but it’s a different use of Instagram than I’ve ever seen so yay innovation. Interested in free beer? Check out PintPass! In exchange for your feedback you can earn money towards beer. While data mining is always a concern, PintPass is attempting to stay very transparent with what data is collected and how it’s used. While still in beta, if you love beer this may be a great way to turn your thoughts into a Stout Ale.     Netflix rolls out ads into its service but there is a way to opt out, with a catch. With news about Netflix inserting ads...um…excuse me, “Recommendations”, into your feed it seems that at least you can turn off those recommendations. However you have to access netflix from a browser on your PC or Tablet as the options to opt out are not available in the app itself.   Netflix does have one good “Recommendation” though, and it’s to bring back GLOW for Season 3! Even though they are cutting many of their original shows, the gorgeous ladies of wrestling get another season. Will they be on the card for Wrestlemania next?   Paul Flart is fired, but his career may be taking off. Paul Flart is a security guard that went viral for recording his farts on the job, has indeed been fired. While the farting wasn’t the issue, the fact he was recording himself in company uniform and on company property is what brought his downfall. He even live streamed his firing on IG Live, but now Reddit is telling him to keep it going, get an agent and contact Jimmy Kimmel. Be careful what you put online folks, it may cost you your job or make you an internet celebrity…..known as “that farting guy”...     How To Catch The Show & Contact Us Be sure to listen and subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play Music or TuneIn and leave a review, lets us know what you think.  Episode 088 "The digitalSoup Back to School Guide" | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:18:34

The big “back to school" episode! The guys discuss ways for the new or returning college student to stay on top of things with technology! Where can you legally stream some football? Is the Iron First 2 trailer worth the watch? Can Miley Cyrus and a T-Rex take on a burning marshmallow man riding a battle cat? All this and more on this episode of digitalSoup! ----more---- Windows 10 Leak Exposes Microsoft's New Monthly Charge (And How Ridiculously Effective Click Bait Titles Can Be. We all saw the panic a few weeks back when the stories about Microsoft’s monthly charge...Turns out it was a lot of fuss over nothing. Click-bait headlines win again. But it gets us thinking about the abundance of subscription based services now vs stand alone software. Where do you stand on the subscription model? What are some of the services/software you feel are absolutely worth your hard earned money each month? Are You Ready For Some Streaming Football? So you love football but don’t want to be tied to cable or satellite contracts. Well here is how to watch the NFL without those constraints: SlingTV (ESPN & NFL Network $25, add NFL Redzone for $10 more) YouTubeTV (all major networks, ESPNs, Fox Sports $40) Playstation Vue (all major networks, ESPNs, Fox Sports $45, add NFL Redzone for $10 more) Hulu with Live TV (all major networks, ESPNs, Fox Sports $40 plus all of Hulu’s next day television and movies) Iron Fist Season 2 Trailer Revenge and gangs, fights and glowing fists. I wonder if they will make season 2 better than the first season? The digitalSoup "Back To School" Guide Software for Students: Office 365 (free for students with school email) The Homework App (iOS & Android) MS & HS My Study Life School Planner (iOS, Android, Chrome) HS & College Desmos Graphing Calculator (iOS, Android, Chrome) HS & College Daily Budget Original (iOS) College What is a good setup for a college student? There are a lot of things to consider! I recently suggested a setup for a new college student that reflected what I use at work. Having a base-station of sorts at your home for homework and entertainment, and being able to be on the go with it at the same time? Yes, it can be done! And, do college students need backup solutions? Yes! A list of things your student will need in addition to Jason’s software list:- A good backpack that can hold both books and a laptop.      - Mancro Travel Computer Bag      - Tocode Fashion Laptop Backpack- A 2-in-1 computer or laptop      - Dell Inspiron 11.6" HD Touchscreen 2 in 1 Tablet Laptop Computer- A docking station      - Dell USB 3.0 Ultra HD/4K Triple Display Docking Station (D3100)- An extra power supply- Dual monitors- Speakers AND headphones- USB Stick with encryption- External keyboard and wireless mouse- A Good Antivirus   Dave’s misc extras to think about Chargers for devices. Extras needed. I recommend the Anker Elite Dual Port Charger. In fact get two because you’ll have plenty of devices to charge. Anker also makes some pretty awesome charging cables so if you find your lightning cable breaking(it will) grab some extras in varying lengths from Anker as well. They really are worth the money. You need to eat something besides the McDonalds Dollar Menu so outfit that kitchen with a few handy devices that let you eat healthier home cooked food without much hassle. Start with the InstantPot for super versatility and this is the smaller size perfect for just one or two people. Another staple for any dorm room is the George Foreman Grill. Let’s you quickly and easily take care of all your meaty needs. Of course if you’re burning the midnight oil you’ll likely discover your appreciation for the morning coffee and why not grab a coffee pot that is programmable so it’s ready when you wake up. This one from Hamilton Beach would be great. One note-skip the Kuerig, yeah they are handy and quick but you’ll find it costs way to much money on a college student budget and probably isn’t worth it. Of course you need to stay hydrated so a simple Brita Water Pitcher gives you clear cold water and if you want to save a little money and skip buying soda grab a SodaStream and enjoy your own soda and flavored sparkling water anytime you want. Of course you need something fun to do so why not grab some fun games perfect for hanging out with friends. Games like SuperFight,Cards Against Humanity, Bad People, or Werewolf would be a perfect place to start! Because the college life can be at once amazing and terrible, creating memories and friendships that will last a lifetime I recommend getting in the habit of taking time to document and enjoy it. Things like a refillable Journal to write and document memories, a camera of some sort(bonus for using something like a Fuji Instax for having those actual tangible print photo memories!), and the use of an app like Shutterfly in which you can order unlimited 4x6 photos for free from your phone or mobile device. Those photos will be some of the biggest things you love years from now! Geek Off: **Miley Cyrus- six inches tall-with a T-Rex wearing a cone of shame Vs. Marshmallow Man-on fire-riding a battle cat ** Weekly Garnish: Expand Your iPhone For Just $15! Have you ever heard the expression “never say never”? Well it doesn’t apply to Apple when it comes to the dream of iPhones with microSD card slots. It’s never, ever going to happen because Apple makes way too much money charging an extra $150 for iPhones with more internal storage. Apple is typically a pretty pro-consumer company, but it’s not ever going to change this policy. The Difini Lightning MicroSD and SD Card Reader isn’t a true workaround, but it is a great solution that allows you to offload your photos and videos to a memory card. It also lets you view photos and videos from your digital camera that are saved on an SD card, so that’s an added bonus. For $15, you really can’t go wrong.   How To Catch The Show & Contact Us Be sure to listen and subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play Music or TuneIn and leave a review, lets us know what you think. A Joker’s Rage continue to hone their craft since forming in 2013. The band’s captivating and intense high-energy performances transport audiences back to a time where the crowd feel like they’re just as much a part of the music as the four face painted ring leaders executing it from the stage. Don’t be fooled by any stereotypes about bands wearing make up either. Their subtle mime/joker like appearance only serves as a catalyst towards their philosophy of escaping the harsh realities of life through music. It’s called #GameFace. A ‘war paint’ attitude fighting against society’s pitfalls and often rebelling against the higher powers of greed who prey on the weak. Check them out at their official website
