Ian & Cherie Moore on Growing Up Vegan in a Non-Vegan World | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:53

The plant-based and vegan lifestyle is currently trending. From awareness about the benefits of living a plant-based lifestyle for ethical, environmental, and health reasons to the availability of vegan products, there's no doubt that this movement is booming. Yet, most people don't become vegan until later in their lives if at all, and most people still probably believe that you can't do it as a kid or especially from birth. Well, today I'm joined by my good friend Ian Moore and his mom Cherie, to talk about his experience being born and raised on a completely plant-based, vegan diet. Yup, Ian is almost 23 and has never eaten animal products, and is also a high-level road cyclist. It still blows my mind. His mom went vegan at the age of 18 and has never looked back, setting a world record in the tandem ride across America and becoming a nutrition teacher at Cuesta College in the process. These two have some fantastic stories to tell and advice to share about living a healthy plant-based lifestyle, and we talk about: * Cherie's shift to a plant-based lifestyle while going to school in Hawaii * What it was like raising a kid on a vegan diet * Ian's experience growing up socially as a vegan * How to thrive as an athlete while eating only plants * And plenty more This was a super fun conversation, and it has been great to stay with these guys for part of my time in CA. I'm embarking on an epic plant-fueled cycling adventure this summer in Europe with Ian which will be amazing, so plenty more to come from Ian the Vegan. Go follow him on Instagram @igmoore to check out life as a vegan cyclist, and look out for his vlog dropping soon! The TFF TV vlog is on a short hiatus after taking a little break from the daily vlogging experience, but stay tuned for the new and improved vlog coming soon! Subscribe here: bit.ly/tfftv. Hopefully this conversation gives you some insight into how simple and effective eating plants can be, at any point in the lifespan. From newborns to elite athletes, plants are the answer. So go eat some plants, and do some epic shit. -Jackson Want to support the show and what TFF is doing?  Emily Byrd on Communicating the Trends of the Plant-Based Food Revolution | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:15:00

This week we talk with Emily Byrd, the Senior Communications Specialist at the Good Food Institute, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to changing the world through food. If you listened to episode 31 of the podcast with Liz Specht, Emily's colleague, then you probably know a thing or two about GFI. But basically, they help to support companies in the blossoming plant-based food tech scene with science, legal, and business expertise with a team of the best of the best - what I call the Avengers of the plant-based world. And Emily's job is communicating the trends, science, and news of this industry while dismantling the misconceptions of plant-based living. Emily's background is in journalism from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and she grew up witnessing firsthand the environmental destruction and animal suffering that comes from hog farming in that part of the world. This led her down a path of fascination with healthy living and reporting on the issues of food and health. She then landed her dream job at GFI and has truly found her calling, which is marrying her love of writing with her love of science and plant-based nutrition.  We have a fantastic conversation, diving into topics such as: * her evolution into her current job at GFI, and how growing up in hog country impacted her path towards this * what the current plant-based food tech scene is looking like and her favorite new products * her thoughts on the future of plant-based food tech and what it's like from the inside of the industry * how to communicate these topics and ideas to the mainstream * and more! Here at Thought For Food, we're huge GFI fanboys, so it was an enormous honor to sit down with Emily in Berkeley, California for this conversation. I also got to attend the UC Berkeley plant-based food tech class we talked about in the conversation the next day. This movement is gaining so much traction, and we're nearing a tipping point. Don't get left behind! We hope you enjoy the episode and be sure to let us know what you think. We'd love to continue the conversation! So go eat some plants, and do epic shit. -Jackson and Aaron Want to support the show and what TFF is doing?  Kip Andersen & Keegan Kuhn on What The Health is Wrong With Our Food System? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:30

After their smashing success with the widely popular documentary, Cowspiracy, Kip and Keegan are back with a new film called What The Health. What The Health is essentially focused on uncovering the corruption and backwards policies that make up our current healthcare paradigm, including how its designed to treat disease symptoms rather than focus on prevention, work in the favor of industry, and how organizations like the American Heart Association are in the back pocket of animal agriculture industries. This dynamic duo - Keegan the filmmaker and Kip the star - have created these two films in an effort to open the public's eyes regarding how and where our food comes from, and the startling implications that entails. We sat down in Berkeley, California for a fantastic conversation, covering: * Kip and Keegan's background and how they developed a love for filmmaking and plant-based living * Update on Cowspiracy and their experience of going on Joe Rogan's podcast * All things What The Health - favorite moments, difficulties, and what we should do now * Their workflow and process of making these films * Kip's experience of training for an Ironman in about 3 months * Their opinion on clean meat technology * Rapid fire questions to get to know these guys a bit more I had the opportunity to see What The Health's screening in San Francisco a few days before this interview, and really enjoyed it. It was chock-full of evidence-based nutrition science, shocking truths about our healthcare system, and funny and entertaining moments. I truly believe that this documentary will have a significant impact on how the public perceives plant-based nutrition as a means for preventing and reversing disease and will hopefully stimulate a conversation about how we can make a difference as individuals. As of now (March 16th) the film is available to watch at whatthehealthfilm.com so please go watch it and share with your friends and family (ESPECIALLY those who aren't tuned into nutrition or health)! During the first four days of the film's release online, half of the proceeds are being donated to Food Not Bombs, so it's a great cause to support along with an amazing documentary! Huge thanks to Kip and Keegan for stopping by and joining me on the podcast, I had a blast and it was an honor to sit down with them for a conversation. Hope you enjoy the episode, and tell us what you think over on social media! Go eat some plants, and do epic shit.    -Jackson Want to support the show and what TFF is doing?  Clare Gallagher on Leadville, Coral Reefs, and Finding Your Path | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:07:25

This week's guest is one interesting and badass chick. Clare Gallagher is a Princeton grad, studying coral reef ecology in Thailand. She also ran track for the school and struggled with the culture and pressures of collegiate running. After she graduated, she spent time in Thailand and spontaneously decided to run a 50 mile race, sparking her love of ultrarunning. She then won the prestigious Leadville 100 in 2016, shattering the previous women's record and placing 5th overall in the grueling race. Clare is energetic, passionate, and laughs a lot - she truly has found her path with trail and mountain running. It was truly a pleasure to sit down with her and hear about the ups and downs of her path and to get to know this upcoming legend in the sport of ultrarunning. This is a conversation about grit, determination, and getting uncomfortable. About loving what you do and doing what you love. We talk about: * her interest in the natural world, starting with studying coral reef ecology in Thailand * the experience of that first ultra she did in Thailand and how that sparked her love for the sport * taking a leap of faith to pursue your path * pushing the limits of what you think is possible * her recap of Leadville * nutrition talk (aka why she eats frosting while running) * rapid fire questions! If you want to see more of Clare, REI made a super rad video profiling her! Check it out below. I also asked her a few more bonus questions in my vlog on YouTube which is also below, so watch that for some more footage. Thanks again to Clare and enjoy the episode! Go eat some plants, and do epic shit. -Jackson Want to support the show and what TFF is doing?
