Savannah Georgia is full of creepy tales and the ghosts of bygone days. But few can be witnessed from 20000 feet over the Savannah International Airport.  93 - Ghosts of Smallwood’s Store - Chokoloskee, FL | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:05:03

The shadowy spirits of long dead outlaws, unsolved murders, whispered secrets and fried green tomatoes……..this roadtrip ain’t for the faint of heart. We’re headed deep into the wilds of Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge for a visit to Ted Smallwood’s legendary Smallwood Store on Chokoloskee Island. If you’ve got the nerve to brave the labyrinth of mangrove islands, back wood marshes, brackish ponds and winding channels , you’ll discover a wild land steeped in history and shrouded in myth. Step into Smallwood’s and step back in time as you peruse the shelves of this 1920’s time capsule But don’t be fooled by the beauty of this amazing landscape. Ghosts walk these old plank floors, who’s secrets have yet to be told. This is an outdoors man’s (or woman’s) paradise. Fishing, boating, kayaking and camping adventures abound. There are plenty of guided canoe or kayak trips, dolphin ecotours and birding or wildlife powerboat tours for newbies. Our Defense Against The Dark Arts will hopefully protect you from the mosquitoes and the elusive Florida panthers…….hopefully…… Once you get your land legs back, head on over to Triad Seafood in Everglades City for home made desserts and it’s infamous “All You Can Eat Stone Crab”. We hear the Alligator Tail is pretty tasty, too. This no frills eatery offers gorgeous views of the Barron River and a Key Lime pie so good, it’s been know to make grown men drop to their knees in the middle of the restaurant, throw their hands in the air and uncontrollably weep with unbridled gastric ecstasy….not really. But it’s supposed to be really good. No trip to the Everglades would be complete without a trip to the Skunk Ape Research Headquarters in Ochopee, Florida. We’ll discuss the “Jane Goodall of Skunk Apes” and find out the Skunk Ape’s favorite snacks. Let’s just hope it’s not chubby podcasters from Oklahoma!  92 - Black Mist - Casa Grande, AZ | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 50:10

We’re taking a road trip to the big house this week. Casa Grande Arizona is filled with mysterious tales of the unknown and frightening but we’ve found an oddity that is sure to leave you thinking twice about going into the desert after dark. A silent black mist slowly creeps through the canyons stalling cars and baffling hikers as it slowly engulfs them. Is it an ancient native American spirit in search of the souls of lonely travelers or just one of the dust storms so common in the area? We’ll hash out the lore and delve into the local legends. All work and no play makes Harley a hangry dude, so we’ll grab a bite to eat at the Big House Cafe. All you can eat tacos, people! This is what we’ve been training for. It’s go time, Oddballs! While you’re in town, take a side trip to the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Mysteriously abandoned by the Sonoran “Hohokam” people in the 1400’s, we’ll explore the majestic landscape and remains of the village they left behind. So, was it famine and disease that caused them to abandon this once thriving village, or perhaps something more sinister. Maybe it was all the freakin rattlesnakes in the state of Arizona! Speaking of snakes, Brett’s Top 5 is bound to get you a little…..’rattled’……Get it…rattled?……No? From sweet bags of blood to hairy gumballs, we’ll take you out of your culinary comfort zone and tickle your pallette with these sweet treats. We also ramble on (as Brett and Amy so often do) about our own favorite and not so favorite candies.  91 - Were-otter - Sitka, AK | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:04:23

We’re taking a trip to the seaside town of Sitka, Alaska this week to discuss (arguably) the most adorable cryptid we’ve ever covered. The Kooshdakhaa are a mythical shape-shifting race of were-otters found in the stories of the Tlingit and Tsimshian Indians of Southeastern Alaska. Vicious soul stealing monster or cute and cuddly life saver? I’m still waiting on an email response from Charlie Sheen….. We’ll visit the Fortress of the Bear for an up close and personal look at these incredible Alaskan Bears. Set against the Tongass National Forest, this habitat offers daily tours. Learn the challenges they face as the staff work to rescue these incredible giants. And I think Amy has found her spirit animal. We’ll stop for a bite at the Bayview Pub for a delicious Elk burger. Tony and Patricia have created a warm and welcoming restaurant sourcing their seafood fresh from the docks. Harley may scoff at the deliciousness of it but Amy is ready for some Rockfish tacos-served grilled, blackened, or house-dipped beer-battered and fried. With the largest selection of beer in town and 10 TVs, we may just have to move in. We’ll honor a true Iditarod hero in the top 5 and learn what not to do with a moose.  90 - The Beale Cipher Conspiracy - Bedford VA | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:01:12

WARNING! This episode may result in gold fever. On this week’s episode, Brett and Amy take you on a hike to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to investigate the Beale Cipher Conspiracy of Bedford, sandwiched between Lynchburg and Roanoke. Travel with us as we search in a “place that sells itself”. What is the historical link between Bedford and Normandy? Besides the history, we also discuss the beauty and activities that are a huge draw for the modern traveler. From beautiful hiking trails and outdoor activities to the music and local cultural activities. This town has a lot going on today, but a lot of people visit for a completely different reason…GOLD. We discuss the treasure legend and conspiracies around the Beale Cipher. From the history of the Beale papers to the history of the people who have searched in vain for the treasure, we cover it all. We definitely know exactly where the treasure is hidden and we are blowin’ the lid off of this mystery….except for maybe, where the treasure is located. The treasure is only estimated to be worth 63 million dollars in today’s money, so you may only have enough to share with us….just sayin’. We also discuss Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. It is really the most popular poplar forest ever. No Episode of the Travel Oddities Podcast would be complete without a place to grab a bite, and we found a restaurant steeped in travel history. Olde Liberty Station is THE restaurant to go to in Bedford, and it is an honest to goodness restored railroad station. Amy has been writing the defense against the dark arts segment again…so there will be discussion around bug spray. The Top 5 has apparently been named the most important part of the show….so we included it.  Odd Spot - Billy Bass Adoption Center - Little Rock, AR | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 9:40

Don’t worry, be happy…that we have found one of the oddest places for this episode of Odd Spots. On this Odd Spot, Brett and Amy take you on a trip to the big city of Little Rock to adopt an 80’s fad and it’s really strange back story. Travel with us as we dive into the Billy Bass Adoption Center…yes, that Billy Bass. Why is there an adoption center for a singing fish plaque? This restaurant has taken to taking those old man-cave hangings and saving them from the landfill. Flying Fish Help us keep the show running by joining our Patreon!
