 Episode 50 - Looking Back | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:45:11

We take a brief look back at how Scouting has changed in Canada over the last few decades, and then discuss our own Scouting memories. Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher ----more---- Podcast Topics To celebrate that it's the fiftieth episode of the podcast, Ken and Colin invited back several people who have previously been guests on the show; Regan, Corey (Hawkeye), and Jayson (Echo) were all able to chime in on this one. We talk for a bit about some ways in which Scouting has changed in Canada over the last fifty years, and then launch into an extended nostalgia session in which we recall our favourite — and least favourite — Scouting memories! Shout-Outs Firstly, we'd like to give a shout-out to Brian, from Australia, who wrote in: Hi there guys. I'm letting you know that you have at least one listener in Melbourne, Australia. It's interesting to hear about the differences and similarities between the organizations of the BSA, Scouts Canada, and Scouts Australia. And we'd also like to give a shout-out to Rob, from Alberta, Canada, who a) used to work with Ken, and b) has been involved with Scouting for a long time as well. His letter was a bit long to include in the show notes; you'll have to listen to the episode! And as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. (Unfortunately, circumstances — notably, the weather! — dictated that we weren't able to meet up in person; Justin is a resident of Dublin.) The discussion ranges over a few different topics; we start by discussing JOTA-JOTI and end up discussing the Boy Scouts of America and their recent decision to allow female membership in Cub Scouts in 2018, followed by membership in all sections the year after. Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 48 - Perspective Shift | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 42:41

How has your exposure to Scouts from other countries influenced your worldview? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Before we dive into the meat of the topic, Ken and Colin take a quick look at the state of the podcast, and note that Scouting Stuff has been running for two years now! That's right; our first episode was published on October 8, 2015, or just over two years ago. And here we are now, nearing our fiftieth episode, and doing very well indeed; at least on the Canadian iTunes charts, Scouting Stuff got as high as #66 on the top 100 Government & Organizations podcasts last week. Also, Scouter Ken is indeed headed to Cork, Ireland, and will be there between the 16th and 25th of October. If you'd like to get in touch — whether to hang out, invite him to meet your Scout (or Cub, or Beaver) group, or to turn in a guest appearance on a Scouting Stuff episode — please do get in touch. Today's topic is more of an opinion piece; Ken and Colin discuss the ways in which their worldviews have changed from having met Scouts from different countries. And though we don't ask it in the podcast proper, we would love to hear your stories about this topic as well: how has meeting Scouts from around the world changed your perspective? The upcoming JOTA-JOTI weekend is also discussed, albeit briefly. Shout-Outs This week, we've got a shout-out for Nancy Nobles, who wrote in: On my vacation last week we went to the Scout Shop in Windsor, Ontario. It was a great experience. I would never have done that if not for your show. We got lots of patches. Thank you for all you do. Keep it up.If you ever have questions on the American Cub Scout program, I would be happy to help. I have over 9 years experience. Our apologies, Nancy; we weren't able to get you on this episode. But we will be in touch soon; we'd love to discuss the differences in Cub Scouting that exist between the US and Canada. And as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 47 - How To/Not To Get Lost | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:10:22

There are a lot of neat natural ways to find your direction of travel, assess the weather, and whatnot. Hopefully, you never end up lost! But if you do...what is the best thing to do? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Follow-Up From Previous Episode Listener danteplay sent in his thoughts on our last episode: I'll try to keep it short but I had ideas through the entire Podcast. Great topic! My feeling is the Canadian Path is not jut for the youth. It is also up to Scouters to choose their own path. That may mean turning down some things. Volunteerism is a learned behavior in my opinion. I learned it from my Dad. My pack-aged son is learning it from me. The younger youth also need a proper life balance. My son is a cub helper in colony. He's in pack of course. Swim lesons and house league basketball take up another couple of nights. Yesterday he told me he signed up to be a lunch monitor with the younger grades. He was sad that he couldn't sign up for more than he did due to a conflict with track and field at school. I had to tell him it's ok to not volunteer for everything. We couldn't agree more. Knowing what you can commit to be involved with, and knowing what the limits of your involvement should be...these are both important things. Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin sit down to discuss a great article at Atlas Obscura that talks about various natural methods and signs that can be used to find your way (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), or to spot impending weather changes. And then we talk a bit about what to do when one gets lost outdoors. Also, here’s a photo of the Cub Scout handbooks that are mentioned in the episode, which finished printing just before this episode went up:   Shout-Outs The first shout-out goes to Dan, who sent along his thoughts as a new listener: Hello,I found your podcast a few weeks ago and have enjoyed the past couple episodes. I am now going back to review previous episodes. You are doing a great service to Scouting, Thank you! And a second shout-out goes to Matt, from Australia, who wrote in again: G'day GuysI am really impressed with what your podcast brings to my knowledge of the world of scouting. It's great because I have so many different ideas that are outside of the resources available to me in Australia. My Scout den is running JOTA JOTI this year and I would love the chance for my Joeys to be able to talk to some Canada Beaver. Could you please let me know what you have planned and maybe we could make a contact. Also if you ever what to talk about how we do things down under I would be keen to talk.CheersWobbegongMatt Joey leaders have native animals for scout names Thirdly, a shout-out for Paul, who is new to Scouting, and who had a popcorn question: Just started scouting (Scouter Paul of 10th Barrie) also the 10th Barrie treasurer. Went looking for a scouts podcast and found yours. So far great stuff. One question though how do I signup for the Scout/Square partnership to get the $1500 allowance?  Episode 46 - Scouting/Life Balance for Scouters | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:10:55

What are some strategies to keep Scouters — and youth, for that matter — from burning out on Scouting? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Follow-Up From Previous Episode Scouter Colin — not our Colin; a different one — writes: On your podcast you suggested that you could just charge more to cover the fees. However, this violates the Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry. You can't charge more for credit card payments legally. Some merchants offer discouts for cash payments but you can't just add the 2.4%. So there's that; don't add a surcharge to your popcorn prices if you're taking Square payments! Podcast Topic(s) Is there such a thing as too much Scouting? We'd like to answer “no”, of course, but in truth, it's very much a “yes”; it is both entirely possible, and entirely too easy, to get in over your head when it comes to being involved in the Scouting movement. And this is true for both youth and adults! Shout-Outs Our first shout out goes to Artillerist, who left us a five star review on iTunes: It is a great podcast and there is many new things I am learning. And Scouter Mike — our guest on the show last week — left us a review on Facebook: Great conversation with Great Scouters! Learn something new every episode and feel energized and renewed about facilitating the adventure of Scouting! Relatedly, you can apparently leave us reviews on Facebook.  Episode 45 - It's Popcorn Time Again! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:18:51

We discuss Scouts Canada's revamped popcorn fundraiser program, which has been given a Canadian Path makeover this year. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topic(s) Scouters Mike and Carolyn, both from Battlefields Council in Ontario, join Ken to discuss Scouts Canada's principal fundraiser: Scout Popcorn. Scouts have been selling popcorn for a long time, but the sales got a complete redesign this year — the changes brought in by the Canadian Path program haven't just affected how youth earn badges or Top Section Awards! As the Popcorn Kernels for their Council, Mike and Carolyn were only too happy to come on the podcast and discuss all of this. And happily, the hotel wifi where Ken has been staying all week mostly didn't cause problems, until the very end of the recording session.  Encore Presentation: Leader Communication | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:08

This is an encore presentation of Episode 8: Effectively leading a Scout group, at any age level, means having good communication between the leaders. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | Anchor Podcast Topic(s) This week, Ken and Colin discuss an important facet of effectively running a Scout group, regardless of what section it is or what the ages of the youth are. That facet is communication between the leaders. And in addition to stressing how important it is to have an effective communication channel between all your leaders that all of them are willing to participate in, we touch on the need for a succession plan in your group's leadership structure, and also emphasize the benefits of planning weeks or months worth of events in advance. Also, as promised, you can find some information about Scouts Canada's Scouters Five concept here, and here. Shout-Outs Firstly, we'd like to give a shout-out to whomever nominated Scouting Stuff for inclusion on Podbean's list of Featured Podcasts under the Government & Organizations category. That is a curated list, and for a podcast to appear thereupon, the listeners of that podcast must nominate it for consideration. So, whoever did that: a shout-out to you! And we'd also like to give a shout-out to Kelly Bruce, who sent us a message on Facebook. Our apologies, Kelly; we weren't able to bring Brian on board for this episode, so we weren't able to set up a compare-and-contrast discussion concerning Kub Kars and the Pinewood Derby. But that's coming soon! As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 44 - Helping Scouts Get Comfortable With Camping | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 56:39

Some youth are gung-ho to get out and sleep overnight in the outdoors. Others, however, have a very different reaction. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin discuss an old — but still relevant — Scouting Magazine article that looks at the reasons why Scouts (youth in general, really) might express fear or trepidation at the idea of camping out in the wilderness. Strategies to mitigate those fears are also discussed, with additional reference made to Scouts Canada's guide to taking Beaver Scouts camping. Shout-Outs We'd like to give a shout-out to Matt, who wrote in from Australia to comment on the Be Prepared episode: G'day! I just listened to your Be Prepared podcast. You guys are great; thanks for a great show. If you made a scarf and would ship it to Australia, I would love to buy one. I'm a Joey Scout assistant leader. Additionally, a shout-out goes out to Chris, a Scouter whom Ken met at the Beaver Hills/Rivers Edge Cuboree back in May; Chris, Ken, and Colin first crossed paths back in 2005, at Camp Impeesa. And yet another shout-out goes out to Chris C., who sent in several emails (and thus has been awaiting a shout-out for far too long). Here's the first: Great podcast, keep up the great work.My suggestion for a future podcast episode is working with special needs youth. I realize its a broad subject, but even having a child/youth worker or some other person with a background in child development as a guest who can offer some tips and strategies about youth with special needs and how we as scouters can better identify and understand those needs And here's the second: Another topic I thought of, as I continue to get caught up in the podcasts is a troop wrap up of a year on the path, similar to what you had done with Beavers.I'm interested in hearing other successes on the path, without the negativity that comes from the Facebook group. That candid review, part of that plan do review I read about somewhere. On a side note I appreciate your honesty and forwardness on the episode about respect in sports and what scouting has meant to you. It took that courage we try to instil in the youth and even ourselves. And the third: In response to some thoughts on the be prepared podcast about a necker, I'd go further to suggest a podcast crest made available, even for sale. Can never have too many crests for the blankets.  Episode 43 - Canadian Jamboree Memories | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:57

A few stories and memories from the 1997 Canadian Jamboree. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topic(s) This episode was done on the fly by Ken, after a) none of the Scout groups who had offered to possibly submit recordings from the recently-concluded 2017 Canadian Jamboree were able to do so, and after b) the recording for another episode featuring Regan experienced some local data corruption (so hopefully the backups are intact!). Not having been able to attend CJ2017, Ken instead spends a bit of time reflecting on his memories of another Canadian Jamboree, one that occurred twenty years prior in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.
