 Episode 69 - Investiture | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:21

It's a big deal. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics Ken and Colin discuss — after some disbelief that we haven't covered the topic in depth as yet — investiture ceremonies, the (hopefully) formal events at which new members to Scouting sections are fully welcomed into those sections. The Canadian Path Scouter Manual provides helpful outlines — templates, really — for investiture ceremonies for Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Scouts. It (rather humorously) does not detail an investiture ceremony for Venturer Scouts, although it does list investiture as one of the various ceremonies that a Venturer Scout Company could perform. And for Rover Scouts, the exact format of the ceremony is left up to the Rovers themselves to decide, though the manual does recommend that the ceremony be preceded by mentoring of the prospective new Rover by an older member of the section, and time for reflection upon the principles of Scouting. Even so, the manual does put forth as mandatory common elements in all investiture ceremonies several elements, including: The saying of the Promise and, optionally, the Law specific to each Section. For older sections, reciting the Motto is also required. The awarding of the youth's new woggle and necker after reciting the above. Some action or words to welcome the new members to the section. What follows, then, is a discussion of different means of investing youth into Scouting, as well as Ken and Colin's own experiences both being invested, and performing investiture ceremonies. Shout-Outs Firstly, we'd like to give a shout-out to Benjamin, who wrote in with a correction for Episode 67: Hello,I just recently discovered your podcast and I'm loving it so far.A small correction on your latest episode, you linked to the World's Largest Fleur-de-Lis on instagram saying it was posted by WOSM. The account that posted it is actually run by the UK scouts.Again, love the show, keep up the great work. And another shout-out is belatedly owed to Dan, who some months prior sent in the following chart explaining the different names for ghost crests of various colours: Thirdly, we'd like to give Raul a shout-out, for his question about the pronunciation of the word “woggle”: Hello, Ken, good evening , I'm still listening to your podcast. Now I'm listening to episode 60: All about neckers. I liked how little I understood (my English is still insufficient) the explanation about the folds of the scout handkerchief: beavers, wolves, etc.. I found it very interesting. I'm curious about a word you say several times, but I can't identify it. You say something like "walgo" or "gualgo". but I don't know how to spell it. Listened to from minute 32. And as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 68 - Interview With a Cub Scout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 41:44

The one in which Scouter Ken's daughter joins the podcast for an episode, and we end up talking about her experiences in Cub Scouts. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics The packing list topic gets punted, again! But in its place, Ken and Colin sit down for a chat and are soon joined by Ella, Ken's eldest daughter and a Howler in Cub Scouts this year. Which turns out to be a great thing, and what would otherwise have been an informal chat with no real topic in mind becomes an interview about Ella's experiences in Cubs to date, and what her expectations and hopes are for the year to come. There was also a whole other conversation that took place, but unfortunately, microphone issues largely rendered Ken's audio for that segment non-usable. Fodder for another episode, maybe. Shout-Outs We have two shout-outs to give this week, both as a result of comments left on our last episode when it was posted to the Scouts Canada Discussion Group on Facebook. The first shout-out goes to Neil Looby, who commented: I have your podcast on auto-download on my phone now. And the second goes to Joe Vantour, whom you should get in touch with if you have badges to trade, who added: I listen on the weekend when I go into the office to catch up on work that I didn't finish during the week. I am very happy this podcast exists and I look forward to each new episode. Many thanks to both Neil and Joe for listening; we do appreciate it!  Episode 67 - Meet the Parents | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:28

It's time to kick off another year of Scouting. Make sure to get the parents of the youth involved from the very start. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics Firstly, check out this Instagram post from the World Organization of the Scouting Movement; it's a record-setting human fleur-de-lis.Ken and Colin discuss the kickoff of another year of Scouting, and the importance of holding a parent information night for the parents of the youth who comprise the membership of your group. Shout-Outs By request (because we will totally do shout-outs on behalf of listeners): Scouter Eric from the Northern Lights Medical Venturers wants to give a shot-out to Alberta Health Services (AHS) for their generous donation of a retired ambulance to the MedVents. It's not new, but it's a significant upgrade for the MedVents even so, and it's very generous of AHS to donate something as expensive as an ambulance to further Vocational Scouting in the province. And, again, by request, Kristine wants to give a big shout-out to “all the Beavers who attended Damboree” last June. She notes that “the obstacle course was challenging, and perhaps the most challenging part was climbing over the net. But every single Beaver in attendance tried their best and attempted to make it through all of the obstacles. Special thanks to the Scouters and parents who helped with encouraging through the kids through the course!” As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 66 - The LDS Exit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 53:33

We take a look at the recent decision by the LDS church to disengage from Scouting in North America, and suggest that community groups prepare to bring on board youth from LDS groups. ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode:  MP3 Podcast Topics Ken and Colin's Scout Group recently received — and granted — a transfer request. That isn't unusual in and of itself; there have been several youth who've transferred to the 59th Greenfield/Royal Gardens over the years. What made this request stand out, however, was that the youth in question was leaving a Latter-Day Saints (LDS)-affiliated Scout Group, and was looking for a new Scouting home in a community group. This is because the Mormon Church recently announced — in about May of 2018 — that they would be ending their decades-long partnership with Scouting in both Canada and the United States, effective December 2019. The Church does not partner with Scouting outside of North America, and has been putting together a new, global youth program that will serve the needs of Mormon youth the world over. As such, they won't need to use Scouting as their male youth program anymore. Of course, there are hundreds of thousands of youth enrolled in LDS-affiliated Scout Groups in both the US and Canada, and many of these youth will no doubt want to continue on in Scouting. So it would probably be a good idea for Scout Groups to begin preparing now — by assessing whether (and by how much) they can grow their membership, by onboarding new volunteers, etc. — so that they are able to welcome in youth from shuttered LDS groups come late 2019. Shout-Outs We'd like to give a shout-out to Julie, who left a comment on our Facebook post for Episode 63: I wasn't able to listen to the entire podcast but found the first 17 minutes interesting, up to the co-ed discussions. I started in Brownies at age 7 and at senior Pathfinder age (13-15yrs) we met a group of Vents through school who lived in our area and 'buddied' up with them to do various activities/camps. the following year we joined vents (and stayed registered with GGC as well) and had some great adventures, we learned from some great adult role models in both organizations. The year was 1988'ish... 30 years later I am an adult member in both organizations with a teen son and daughter who, up until last year where members in Vents and Pathfinders, respectively. This year they are both signed up for Vents/Medvents and looking forward to new challenges and experiences. I did have a chuckle when it was mentioned about cookie selling, a 5 year old in her brownie uniform.. (just a technicality) but a 5 year old would actually be a spark and super cute. Brownies are the next age up, 7+. Moving forward there is the topic of Gender identity. With Scouting being comfortably co-ed in Canada that may or may not pose some scenarios that need to be considered, no major changes to any policy or guidelines. But Guiding will have other issues to consider moving forward. Interesting times to be living in. As well, Dan wrote in to tell us about some summer adventures that his family have gotten up to, and to talk a bit about Wood Badge II and practicing starting fires. Furthermore, Colin would like to give a shout-out to the various former members of the 59th Greenfield/Royal Gardens Rover Crew that turned out to help him move recently: Ted, Ian, and Jamie.
