 Episode 60 - All About Neckers | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:47

Who knew the humble Scout neckerchief had such rich history and cool traditions associated with it? ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Colin and Ken are joined this week by Parker, a recent Eagle Scout (you'll recall he wrote in recently) to discuss the humble Scout neckerchief — its history, its role in the Scout's uniform, and some of the traditions associated with it. As one might expect, there are also some notable differences in how Scouts Canada approaches the necker, versus how Boy Scouts of America does. Both of them left us five star ratings on Facebook, for which we're very grateful!  Episode 59 - Inclusive Advancement | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:33

Scouting is — or should be — open to all, but not everyone can advance through the program in the same way. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Ken and Colin take a look at the case of Logan Blythe, and some of the misinformation surrounding that story, all with an eye toward the idea of inclusion in Scouting, and the idea that although Scouting is indeed open to all, rank and advancement requirements within Scouting shouldn't be a “one size fits all” kind of thing. Because, in practice, one size won't fit all. Eagle Scout Alternative Rank Requirements: https://www.scouting.org/programs/boy-scouts/advancement-and-awards/eaglealt/ Boards of Review Requirements: https://www.scouting.org/resources/guide-to-advancement/boards-of-review/ Shout-Outs We have had a number of emails and comments come in, which is awesome. So, firstly, a shout-out to Parker, who sent us an email: Hey Scouter Ken,I am a former Eagle Scout on the BSA side. I just wanted to say thanks for the podcast, and if you need a guest to represent the BSA side let me know. I'd be happy to do it. We weren't able to get Parker on this episode, although we may attempt to revisit this issue and get his thoughts on it in the future. Via Podbean, we received another comment from honeyfield10, this one on Episode 56: I agree that Scouting creates friends for life. I have some friends who I grew up with for many years in Scouting, and even though we don't talk as much, I know they are still my friends and will be for life. So our second shout-out goes to honeyfield10. A third shout-out goes out to Klavs, who left a comment on our Facebook post about Episode 42: Just discovered your podcast (yeah, I know, a little late) and have listened more or less non-stop the last couple of days. Driving to work today, I heard the podcast on the motto, and you mentioned mottoes from around the world. Being from Denmark, I was pleasantly surprised when you mentioned our motto, but was less pleasantly surprised by your quote. I can't remember what you said (but it was far from what it actually is, at least for The Danish Scout and Guide Association). Its motto is “vær beredt”, which is a literal translation of “Be Prepared”...so not as exotic as your quote.Apart from that, it's a great podcast, even for a Dane Scouting in the UK. We pulled a number of mottoes from this Wikipedia article, and it would seem we read from the wrong column in that table. Our apologies! And, as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 58 - The Alberta Youth Network | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:46

Every Scouting youth (in Alberta, at least) is a member! ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Ken is joined by Taelon, the Council Youth Commissioner for Northern Lights Council (the Scouts Canada council that covers northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories), and Pascal, the outgoing CYC for Chinook Council (which covers southern Alberta), to discuss the Alberta Youth Network. This initiative exists to help ensure that youth leadership occurs in a meaningful way within Scouting in Alberta, gives youth an opportunity to provide direction in the programming their Groups engage in, and encourages youth to find opportunities for leadership. And best of all, every Scout in Alberta is already a member.Note: At the time this episode was recorded, Pascal was in fact the Council Youth Commissioner for Chinook Council. However, as of this week, he has announced that he is stepping down from the position, as his next co-op work term will see him sent off to Fort McMurray, Alberta, for up to sixteen months. Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. This facility, funded my a multi-million dollar grant from a number of major corporations, was the site of BSA's 2017 National Jamboree, and will also be the site of the 2019 24th World Scouts Jamboree, which is being co-hosted by Scouts Canada, Boy Scouts of America, and Asociación de Scouts de México.Brian also recaps his experiences at the National Jamboree, and discusses why attending the upcoming World Jamboree is an opportunity that should not, if at all possible, be missed out on. Shout-Outs The first shout-out of the night goes to Travis Normand, who sent in a lengthy email inspired by our episode about Philmont. In it, he recapped his own experiences at Philmont, among other things, and then in such detail that it really only makes sense to invite him on to talk about it in a future episode.  Episode 56 - Discussions From Funarama | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:04:25

A series of interviews with youth who attended Funarama, a Cub Scout camp held recently in Wainwright, Alberta. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Whilst at Funarama recently, Ken recorded a few interviews with some of the Cubs — and Scouts! — attending that camp. This episode collects those interviews into a single place, with some additional commentary provided by Colin. Shout-Outs We'd like to give a shout-out to Cindy, who wrote in: Hey Scouter Ken! I really enjoy your SSYSK podcast and have recommended it to my Scouters. I do have a favour to ask: as Group Commissioner of [a Scout Group from Manitoba, Canada] I would like to use/share some of your content at our Baden Powell Banquet next week. Specifically the section from Episode 23 Why the Fleur-de-Lis? This struck a chord with me and I would like to remind our Group to wear their uniforms and the F-d-L with pride. Please let me know if this is ok. I would certainly give credit to you and your podcast during my speech at the Banquet. Of course, we could almost say that Cindy didn't need to ask; we put out the content we do in the hopes that it will be shared, and that it will bring some value to Scouts and Scouters on their own journeys with the movement. That said, if you do use our content for anything, we'd love to hear from you about that...not in the sense that we want you to ask for our permission, but because it's neat to have that sort of feedback that, yes, this or that thing we said is being shared with others. And as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience.  Episode 55 - iScout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:04

Developers and players of iScout, an online and offline challenge for Scouts around the world, join us to talk about the game. ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics This week, we are joined by Mark and Niels, two of the developers of iScout, which is described thusly: The game is about creative tasks such as: organize a street race with bicycles and give aeroplane-like safety instructions in a bus. Other people can search the internet for answers to Travel Questions, such as: Go to the paper town from paper towns and Find the country where internet usages decrease. For each Task you complete, you can buy two Travel Questions. The team that answers the most Travel Question right wins the game. Also joining us is Wilfred, an avid player of iScout, who was in fact the one who brought the game to our attention and organized the interview. We hadn't previously known much about this game, but it sounds like good fun. If you'd like to register a team, you can still do so — registration will likely be open until March 3rd, or until 430 teams have registered. And yes, there are crests...of course there are crests.
