Grizzly Kiki | Pop Culture & Interviews With Queer Artists

Summary: Grizzly Kiki began in April 2014 as a pop culture and drag-centric podcast hosted by Robert Lechuga & Daniel Silva. We launched with recaps of RuPaul’s Drag Race and other reality programming. Shortly after releasing the first few episodes, we narrowed our focus to create a podcast that was unique in concept and would serve a community near and dear to us: DRAG QUEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The podcast is equal parts oral history and good old-fashioned kiki. We found that there were few platforms where Drag and Nightlife Artists could talk about their art and themselves in an open and honest way. Most of what is known about these artists comes from videos posted on the Internet or what they experience in bars and clubs. It was clear that there were stories to be told and shared with the world. Our mission is to create a comfortable and safe environment, where these artists can share their histories and experiences. Ours is a podcast that is meant to serve the drag and nightlife community by capturing the artists’ voices and making them available to the public. Grizzly Kiki is a program for drag enthusiasts, Drag Artists, and everyone in between. Listen and Join the Party!!

The Haus of Aja | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:46:52

Why Y'all Gagging So?!   Aja, MoMo Shade, Kandy Muse & Dahlia Sin are known as The Haus of Aja, New York's fiercest Drag Collective. These young and talented queens are led by Aja herself, drag mother of all three girls. A Brooklyn native, Aja has been doing drag for the better part of a decade and represents the very essence of New York drag. She is an aesthetic chameleon, using a variety of references to inform her aesthetic, which is ever-evolving.   While Aja may be the Haus' mother, MoMo, Kandy & Dahlia have their own voices and drag styles. Ranging from quiet and sultry to exuberant and powerful, these girls fully embrace the art of drag and create a harmonious balance that reflects the powerful bond they share.   This episode marks a first for Grizzly KiKi, having never interviewed an entire drag family in one sitting. The Haus of Aja is a force to be reckoned with and if you haven't heard about them, get ready, because it was a Ki!

 Sasha Velour | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:47:34

Sasha Velour's Style Is As Sharp As Her Fangs!   The child of hippie academics, Sasha Velour's world view was shaped by the ever-changing landscape around her. A native of Urbana, Illinois, she traveled widely with her parents, who encouraged and supported her creative impulses and gender non-conformity. This support made it possible for Sasha to explore a variety of academic pursuits, including studying Queer culture in Russia on a Fulbright Scholarship.   Over the past two years, Sasha has made her mark on the New York drag scene. She recently published the second edition of "Velour," a glossy and slick homage to drag culture, whose pages contain articles and photo essays curated by her and her partner, Johnny Velour. The mission of "Velour" comes to life at "Night Gowns," her monthly show at Bizarre Bushwick. The show hosts queer performers of varying styles, creating a showcase of drag like no other.   Classifying Sasha's style of drag is an impossible feat, as it reflects a complex confluence of cultural and artistic elements. Nosferatu, Russia, Judaism, and cartooning are the source materials for her looks, while pop culture inspires her performances.

 Shea Coulée | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:19:09

Shea Coulée is a Living Fantasy!   A member of Chicago's dynamic drag scene, Shea Coulée is as refined and chic as her name implies. Shea takes an interdisciplinary approach to drag, using her art school background to transform herself into a living work of art. Sculpture, painting, couture and a myriad of cultural references are drawn upon to conjure up looks that are unique and iconic. Many of them have been the result of collaborations with Adam Ouahmane, a Chicago-based photographer who produces images that are works of art in their own right.   For Shea, drag is not merely a creative outlet. Like many of her drag sisters, the art form serves as a vehicle for political and social commentary. In a city where racial divisions are clearly defined, Shea and other queens have to fight against prejudice and break down boundaries to perform in certain neighborhoods and venues. In her sensual and heady short film, "Lipstick City," she highlights the diversity of the drag community by employing the talents of Queens from many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is a stunning film, but also a powerful statement about equality.

 Bob | Joanne | Rocky | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:36

On This Episode:   Bob The Drag Queen is our Current Reigning, but she is also the inspiration behind this year’s “IT” Halloween costume. C.J., a young child from California, is going to be Bob for Halloween! Calling upon the skills of his FuGuncle Michael, and his mother’s credit card, C.J. created the ultimate “Purse First” costume! C.J.’s mother, Lori Duron, documents the adventures in raising her “Gender Creative Son” on her blog, Raising My Rainbow. She posts regularly about C.J. and how he navigates a world where everyone is expected to fit within pre-determined roles and labels.   Lady Gaga has finally released “Joanne,” her hotly anticipated follow-up to 2013’s “ArtPop.” We review Gaga’s latest album and share our thoughts about her new sound and look.   “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is a cult classic. Upon its release in 1975, the film immediately became a symbol of the counter-culture, challenging gender norms and concepts of sexuality. Now, Fox has remade the film in a “live” TV production, starring Laverne Cox in the iconic role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Does her performance as the Sweet Transvestite from Transexual, Transylvania hold up when compared to Tim Curry’s? We tackle that question and many others as we discuss how well “Rocky Horror” fared on the small screen.   We also answer more of our listeners’ burning questions!!
