Grizzly Kiki | Pop Culture & Interviews With Queer Artists

Summary: Grizzly Kiki began in April 2014 as a pop culture and drag-centric podcast hosted by Robert Lechuga & Daniel Silva. We launched with recaps of RuPaul’s Drag Race and other reality programming. Shortly after releasing the first few episodes, we narrowed our focus to create a podcast that was unique in concept and would serve a community near and dear to us: DRAG QUEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The podcast is equal parts oral history and good old-fashioned kiki. We found that there were few platforms where Drag and Nightlife Artists could talk about their art and themselves in an open and honest way. Most of what is known about these artists comes from videos posted on the Internet or what they experience in bars and clubs. It was clear that there were stories to be told and shared with the world. Our mission is to create a comfortable and safe environment, where these artists can share their histories and experiences. Ours is a podcast that is meant to serve the drag and nightlife community by capturing the artists’ voices and making them available to the public. Grizzly Kiki is a program for drag enthusiasts, Drag Artists, and everyone in between. Listen and Join the Party!!

Misty Meaner and Mocha Lite: Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 52:11

On this episode, Robert and Daniel interview New York Drag Queen Misty Meaner. Misty could have been easily been Leona Helmsley's protégé, with her signature biting commentary and honesty. Along with her partner, Mocha Lite, Misty is one half of New York's premiere drag couple and creative duo known as "Misty and Mocha." Although they come as a package deal, we learn that Misty can stand alone or beside Mocha and never be anybody other than herself. They are an artistic Tour de Force, combining drag, art, photography and makeup artistry to create some of the most memorable looks ever seen on the New York nightlife scene. In Part One of our couples double feature, we learn all about Misty's upbringing in Long Island, her first drag performance, and why doesn't believe in drag mothers, but instead forming a drag army. A self-labeled weird kid from Minnesota, Manila moved to New York so that her artistic personality could flourish. With a streak in her hair and some pep in her step, Karl became the fabulous Manila Luzon. Along with her partner, Sahara Davenport, Manila formed one half of a drag power couple the likes of which had never been seen before. On Season 3, she won people over with her intelligent wit and comedic timing, being both entertaining and somewhat controversial. Although she did not win the crown, she has used Drag Race as a springboard for her career. And she is definitely not sitting on those Drag Race laurels. Manila channels her creativity through her drag persona, traveling all over the world performing and has just released her first full-length album, Eternal Queen. A fun storybook of an album, Eternal Queen takes us on a personal journey, as she uses her songs to express the extreme joys and sorrows in her life. The most poignant song on the album is the title track, which is dedicated in Sahara's honor, who passed away in 2012. We had a marvelous KiKi with Manila and are proud to be able to bring it to our listeners!! Enjoy!
