Grizzly Kiki | Pop Culture & Interviews With Queer Artists
Summary: Grizzly Kiki began in April 2014 as a pop culture and drag-centric podcast hosted by Robert Lechuga & Daniel Silva. We launched with recaps of RuPaul’s Drag Race and other reality programming. Shortly after releasing the first few episodes, we narrowed our focus to create a podcast that was unique in concept and would serve a community near and dear to us: DRAG QUEENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! The podcast is equal parts oral history and good old-fashioned kiki. We found that there were few platforms where Drag and Nightlife Artists could talk about their art and themselves in an open and honest way. Most of what is known about these artists comes from videos posted on the Internet or what they experience in bars and clubs. It was clear that there were stories to be told and shared with the world. Our mission is to create a comfortable and safe environment, where these artists can share their histories and experiences. Ours is a podcast that is meant to serve the drag and nightlife community by capturing the artists’ voices and making them available to the public. This week has been a mess, so it was hard to pick the topics for this episode. We discuss our conflicting feelings on Meryl Streep's epic Trump-centered Golden Globe acceptance speech. Vivica A Fox comes out as a homophobe, proclaiming that gay men are not welcome at her new strip club. HBO's new documentary Bright Lights, which follows the late Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher, gives us a glimpse into the lives of Hollywood royalty. We also share our New Year's Resolutions and read listener emails.

On this episode, Peaches Christ returns to Grizzly KiKi to discuss her upcoming appearance on "The Boulet Brothers' DRAGULA: Search For The World's First Drag Supermonster." As an aficionado of horror and gore, who better than Peaches to judge a competition where the queens have to mud wrestle, eat brains, and be buried alive to stay in the competition. With only the top four queens left, the Boulet Brothers took the girls on a road trip to San Francisco, the epicenter of alternative drag and home to the queen of grotesque glamour herself! We also chat about the scariest movies of 2016 and the passing of Zsa Zsa Gabor. With the deaths of many of our community's beloved female icons on the rise, we take stock of the remaining ladies. Who will be the future torchbearers of glitz and glamour? This episode was recorded prior to the passing of George Michael, Carrie Fisher, and Debbie Reynolds. Our thoughts are with their families during their time of mourning and we cannot fully express our gratitude for their contributions to our community.

Meatball is on a quest to unseat Divine as "The Filthiest Person Alive." Born in Baton Rouge, Meatball spent her formative years traveling the globe. After living in Cairo and London, her family settled in Houston, where she found herself yearning for the cultural stimuli she was accustomed to. Years later, she attended art school, moved to New York, and currently resides in Los Angeles. Now, Meatball is one of nine queens competing for the title of "The World's First Drag Supermonster" in the Boulet Brothers' "Dragula" YouTube competition! A tenacious and talented queen, there is nothing Meatball won't do to out-gross the competition! She's been buried in a box with roaches, smothered her body with pasta, and much more! We interviewed him about his upbringing in small-town Central Illinois, his drag career, the nightlife scene in Chicago, and his eventual move to Los Angeles. Like many of our guests, Tony is an open book. He didn't shy away from sharing the details of being bullied as a child, his current political dispute with his mother, or any number of other stories that provided us with an insight into his life. Charlene Incarnate returns to Grizzly KiKi as a fully realized radical trans-feminine goddess! A lot has changed for Charlene since we last spoke. In the past year and a half, she has legally changed her name, begun her transition, and undergone facial feminization surgery. Embracing her true self has resulted in a renaissance of sorts for this beloved Brooklyn performer. When it comes to Charlene, creative boundaries do not exist, as she strives to create performances that cast a spell over her audience through their level of transgression and socio-political commentary. Listen as we talk about everything from trans healthcare to politics and more, including how to put on your drag training wheels!
