Coffee & Yoga with UFC Fighter Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine – PMR #96 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:56

Known to his fans as “The Dean of Mean,” UFC Heavyweight fighter Keith Jardine had notable wins over former UFC champions Forrest Griffin and Chuck Liddell. Despite his success in the Octagon, however, his body was being broken down by chronic overtraining, extreme diets and stress. A conversation with Keith’s friend, Tait Fletcher, made him realize that he had to change his ways and he ultimately adopted the Paleo lifestyle. As a coffee snob, Keith also realized that he really liked bullet-proof coffee. At this point, Keith has fully embraced the Paleo lifestyle; he even opened his own yoga studio to incorporate more mindful movement in his daily life. He’s drinking bullet-proof coffee and along with Tait Fletcher has founded the Caveman Coffee Company. We think you’re going to really like our conversation with Keith today and we think his story is going to give us all a lot of insight into how difficult it can be to balance work, life, your passions and health. But ultimately it is possible to overcome these challenges and put it all together. In the second half of the show, we’re going to be featuring J. Brett Smith, Program Chair of the Ancestral Health Symposium.  Is Your Healthy Diet an Unhealthy Obsession? – PMR #90 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:52

For some people food is fun, food is delicious; food is a way to express oneself, to share love. But for others, food is a means to control circumstances that they feel are out of control in their life. These circumstances can be an internal world of turmoil and charged emotions, or external circumstances that are dangerous and threatening. What can result is a natural coping mechanism that we call an eating disorder. For people without eating disorders it can be hard to imagine how food can become so much more than what is on your plate; how it becomes all encompassing; how someone can obsess every moment, day in and day out, over what they ate, they didn’t eat, what they wanted to eat, what they shouldn’t have eaten, the guilt, the suffering, all of it layer upon layer building up and hiding the original trauma. My own personal relationship to disordered eating goes back to my childhood when I had my first binge with a jumbo sized bag of Doritos. This is something that continued through elementary school, through middle school, through high school, through college; even as I began my career in fitness I battled with binge eating and exercise bulimia. The conventional fitness model of low fat foods and calories in versus calories out only made things worse for me and I experienced a tremendous relief when I first began to follow the paleo diet. I pretty quickly realized, however, that following a strict paleo diet wasn’t for me. It set me up for a binge just like anything else. And so I realized that I had to find balance. I’ve continued my own path of self work, of self healing, self acceptance and self love and this has been tremendously beneficial. In addition to following a moderate version of the paleo diet where my goal is to improve my health, to feel better and to make positive food choices, sometimes that means eating paleo foods. Sometimes that means eating something that’s decidedly not paleo. But this is what I’ve had to do in order to be healthy for me. Because of where I’ve come from, I am interested in how other people relate to food, disordered eating and the idea of what health is. I read a blog post by Stacy Toth some time ago and I wanted to talk to her about this subject because I could see myself in her story and I could relate to the experience of seeking health but having it blow up in my face, feeling like I’ve taken two steps back for every one step forward. In today’s show I talk to Stacy about the blog post that inspired this podcast episode. But I also wanted to talk to some other people who had struggled with similar issues. In addition to Stacy’s story, you will hear from Madelyn Moon, a former fitness competitor turned body positive blogger, as well as Kaila Prins, who’s been podcasting and writing about the subject of body acceptance and the subtle and not so subtle ways that society tells us how we should look. We will finish the discussion with eating disorder expert Bonnie Brennan, who has worked as a professional counselor for eating disorder clinics for decades. She shares her experience working with patients who have suffered from eating disorders, what the signs and symptoms are, and what resources there might be for those of you listening who might need some help.
