Here's a bit of what I've been able to do so far.
From the Hamblen Collection and the playing of Dan Gellert and Christian Wig Josh Orkin on Guitar, myself on Fiddle
For the October VFF.
Recorded in the early 1990's pretty much live, without any overdubs or edits, in my studio, FiddleFantastick. My son, Jesse, is playing my father's old no-name fiddle which was obtained in the 1930's from former PA state senator Russell Letterman's family by my grandfather. My father said, "It was really old, even back then." In a real "Twist of Fate" kind of thing I ended up teaching the grandson of the former owner of my dad's old fiddle some 50 or more years later! He is now playing in a C & W band somewhere in central PA. I am playing an old 1948 000-17 Martin guitar behind Jesse.

This is my version of the tune I first heard my cousin Art Stamper play. This recording was the first time I ever played it for the public. I hope you enjoy it! Dean Barber is the Banjo player and John Long is on Guitar.
I first heard this tune played in a medley by Ramona Jones. No name was given on the recording but I liked it so I learned it. Later I was told the name of the tune was Chinquipin. Years later I started to hear it called by other names like Buffalo Nickle and Crooked Stove pipe. The name Buffalo Nickle sounded good to me so I stuck with that. I hope you enjoy my version. Banjo is Dean Barber and Guitar is John Long.
I taught this to my Mandoin class at Augusta Old-Time Week during the summer of 2012. I mades CDs of all the tunes taught- slow and fast on the mandolin and here is the slow version of the way I play it.
This is hard for me to do any justice.
