Dr. Lester Zook, EMU Professor in Physical Education and Recreation Department, shares  reflections on bodily self-care with the gathered community in the Seminary. Services held in Martin Chapel at Eastern Mennonite Seminary are planned by the Seminary community but open to all.

In this edition of “Inside Athletics“, Dave and James record the podcast from the   ODAC Basketball Tournaments in Salem, VA. They give an update on the Thursday’s women’s game, the tournament as a whole, and the all-ODAC teams.  Dave also chats with ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston about the ODAC tournaments and some of the work that goes into hosting them at the Salem Civic Center. “Inside Athletics” is a weekly podcast hosted by Athletic Director Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

Local artist and former seminary student Bethany Tobin shares her artwork in the Chapel Gathering in the Seminary. Tobin is passionate about creating works of art that engage the life of discipleship to Christ. She has exhibited work in Virginia and North Carolina and has completed several commissions and murals. In 2006 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing from James Madison University and in 2009, a Master of Theological Studies in Theology and the Arts from Duke University. Dr. Mark Thiessen Nation, professor of Theology presents the monthly Colloquium lecture, focusing on Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The thesis of this lecture is two-fold. First, contrary to the prevailing assumptions, Dietrich Bonhoeffer was not arrested, imprisoned or executed because of involvement in plots to kill Hitler. Second, it is more accurate to say that he was arrested, imprisoned and executed because of the grace-filled, costly discipleship about which he wrote and which he consistently lived from 1932 to his death on April 9, 1945. This lecture is a summary of a book in which Mark and two of his former students, Anthony Siegrist and Dan Umbel, are writing, to be published next year by Baker Academic Press. Of the many books published on Bonhoeffer, this is the first one to make the argument stated above. If its argument is convincing, this book will call for a re-examination of the received wisdom regarding the ongoing legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. View the news release.
