Special recognition is also given to the staff of Pioneer College Caterers and the excellent service they offer EMU.  Chapel concludes with prayer and announcement from President Swartzendruber regarding his trip to Oslo, Norway to be present at the Awards Ceremony in which EMU Alumna Leymah Gbowee will accept the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rev. Jim Ball speaks in University Chapel on Global Warming and the Risen LORD: Christian Discipleship and Climate Change from his award winning book by the same title. Global Warming and the Risen LORD moves beyond the old debates about climate change to a new conversation focusing on the tremendous opportunities there are and the biblical and spiritual resources we have been given to meet this threat. A major focus of the book is the deep biblical basis for our engagement with global warming. Filled with inspirational stories and sobering scientific research, Rev. Ball shows us that global warming is one of the major challenges of our time, but one that can be overcome by following the Risen LORD. The book has recently been recognized by Hearts and Minds as one of the Best Books of 2010 in the category of social engagement. Rev. Jim Ball Ph.D. serves as Executive Vice President for Policy, Climate Campaign for the Evangelical Environmental Network.

Romans 12:9-18 ——- Bishop Dr. Tilewa Johnson serves as Bishop of The Gambia: Head of the Anglican Diocese of The Gambia which comprises the Republics of The Gambia, Senegal and Cape Verde Islands. He is also the father of EMU student Clothilda Dado Johnson (senior) and alum Francis Johnson. Bishop Dr. Johnson spent two decades as a priest and worked towards a goal of balance between “evangelism and social responsibility within a holistic and inclusive ministry.” His ministry seeks to “nurture the soul, enlighten and empower the mind, nourish the body, protect the environment, promote advocacy and liberation for the sinned-against and downtrodden,” according to his website.

Rabbi Daniel Alexander speaks on the theme of “A Jewish Approach to Spirituality” as part of the monthly lecture series sponsored by EMU’s Center for Interfaith Engagement.   Rabbi Alexander is senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville. He received his Rabbinic Ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City in 1979. He directed the Hillel Foundation at the University of Virginia from 1979-1988. Rabbi Alexander is involved in a wide variety of community activities and projects that cross religious and racial lines, frequently speaking to church groups, college students, area schools, and civic organizations in the region. He is a past president of the Alliance for Interfaith Ministries [AIM], has served on the Executive Board of the Interfaith Movement for People in Congregations Acting Together [IMPACT], and encourages Congregation Beth Israel’s commitment to causes of social justice in Charlottesville and beyond. In addition to his service on various local boards, he has taught as Adjunct Lecturer in the Religion Department of the University of Virginia. He has published several articles in The Reform Jewish Quarterly [formerly CCAR Journal], most recently “The Rabbi as Ish Toeh Basadeh (The Man Wandering in the Field)” in the Winter 2011 volume. In May, 2002, Rabbi Alexander earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and in March of 2004, he was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by Hebrew Union College. A native of New Jersey, Rabbi Alexander and his wife, Dela have lived in Charlottesville for 30 years. They have 2 grown children, one an Equine Veterinarian and one a doctoral student in business.
