Eastern Mennonite Seminary students Nicholas Detweiler-Stoddard and Isaac Harper plan and lead worship for Chapel Gathering in the Seminary.  Nicholas preaches from the Old Testament book of Job, proclaiming that “God Works Here.” Chapel Gathering services held in Martin Chapel at Eastern Mennonite Seminary are planned by the Seminary community but open to all.

Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate, receives EMU’s “Alumna of the Year Award” and shares personal reflections. Also being honored posthumously is Glen Lapp, EMU’s “Distinguished Service Award” recipient, who was killed in 2010 while on a medical relief trip to a remote part of Afghanistan.  Reverend David Myers also brings greetings from the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships  

The reunion classes gather in Lehman Auditorium for a short presentation.  President Swartzendruber recognizes the newest inductees into the EMU Hall of Honor, as well as Alumna of the year Leymah Gbowee and the Distinguished Service Award recipient Glen Lapp. Leymah Gbowee and the parents of Glen Lapp offer a response of gratitude.

Hear the introduction of and response by 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate and EMU Alumna of the year Leymah Gbowee.   “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” is an award-winning documentary about the Liberian women who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor in the midst of a brutal civil war.  The documentary is not included in this podcast, but an introduction to the evening is followed by a response presentation by Leymah Gbowee.

In this week’s Inside Athletics, Dave and James talk about the excitement of Homecoming Weekend, including the varsity matches throughout the day on Saturday and the baseball and softball alumni games in the morning. Inside Athletics is a weekly podcast hosted by Athletic Director Dave King. The podcast offers a synopsis of what is happening in EMU athletics, but also delves deeper into how athletics at EMU shapes lives and enhances college educations by positively impacting an athlete’s understanding of self, others, and God. Sports Information Director James De Boer is a regular guest with EMU coaches and athletes making appearances as well.

Leymah Gbowee and Doug Hostetter share stories on their experiences with faith-inspired peace building.  Carolyn Stauffer is worship leader. Carolyn Stauffer is Assistant Professor in the Applied Social Sciences Department. Doug Hostetter serves as the Mennonite Central Committee Representative to the United Nations and is a EMU alumnus. Doug is the 1966 class president. Leymah Gbowee is a social activist and alumnus of the EMU Center for Justice and Peacebuilding. She is the 2011 EMU Alumna of the Year and was recently awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, sharing the prize with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and women’s rights activist Tawakkul Karman of Yemen.

Dr. Bruno Dyck speaks in Chapel Gathering in the Seminary, drawing from Luke 19:1-11 Bruno Dyck, ’82, holds a PhD in business from the University of Alberta and is a professor at the University of Manitoba. Dyck will present on a book he is writing, “Luke on Management.” His research looks at the role of values on how organizations learn and change. In addition, Dyck has researched church and related organizations, including MEDA, Mennonite Central Committee and various church conflicts. Dyck’s work has been published by Business Ethics Quarterly, Case Research Journal, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Developmental Entrepreneurship and the Journal of Management Studies. Doug Hostetter graduated from EMU during the Vietnam War years and did his alternative service with MCC in Tam Ky, Vietnam. His life work has been devoted to seeking nonviolent alternatives to war and oppression in many war zones including of North and South Vietnam, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq. He has been heavily involved in reconciliation, citizen diplomacy, work camps and people-to-people exchanges with the citizens of the USSR, Cuba, Nicaragua, Bosnia, and Israel/Palestine. Doug has published broadly in both the secular and religious press on issues of war, peace, faith and nonviolence. In the 1970s, he was staff for the People’s Peace Treaty in New York City. From 1971-80, he served the United Methodist Office for the United Nations as their Resource Specialist on Peace, Asia, and Latin American Issues. 1980, Doug became the Executive Secretary of the New England Regional Office of the American Friends Service Committee in Cambridge, MA. Doug joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation as Executive Secretary in 1987, and in 1993 became FOR’s International/Interfaith Secretary. In 2003 Doug was ordained as Peace Pastor at Evanston (IL) Mennonite Church. He is currently the Director of the Mennonite Central Committee United Nations Liaison Office in New York City. Mama Brenda Matthews, Undergraduate Spiritual Life Week speaker, addresses Chapel Gathering in the Seminary.  Brenda is an ordained pastor, social activist and poet pregnant with purpose. She seeks to plant seeds of change in the hearts of those who have fallen through the cracks.
